So this week I started selling off my Prince and Madonna collection on ebay.

Times are tough and I need the cash.
I figure, hell, I've bought everything I could ever find on this guy for about 20 years...I think it's time he start paying MY bills for a change...


I've already sold my Vanity 6 cd, the Family japanese cd, the Rainbow Children 2lp, the Jill Jones cd and the money has been sweet.

Anyone else have to part with some collectables to pay the bills?

Prince is the one thing I refuse to part with, even when it comes to bills.

I thought it would be heartbreaking to part with my collectables.

It's kinda liberating.

I just don't feel the need to be tied down to so much stuff anymore.

Not only that, I gave away about 3 bags of clothes to the salvation army and I haven't even begun to dig through the box of cassette tapes in the closet.

I did the exact same thing about 4 years ago and made almost $4,000. And to think my moms used to tell me to stop wasting my money on Prince when I was a kid. Little did she know how much of an investment it was.

Yeah. It IS awful. But, to my credit, I will always have the memory of having met him backstage and talking to him and Lenny for 30 minutes in his dressing room with NO ONE else around.

It was on the Soul To Soul tour, the conversation went like this:

"YOU ARE A GOD!"

"no I'm not man, I'm just about the music. you should dig the music, not me".

"Oh. Okay. But you ARE A GOD!"

"okay. but really, I just like the music".

I told her I don't know of any Prince museum where she could donate the collection. It's worth several thousand dollars and says she could get a nice tax break for making the donation, but I dunno.

I went to see the show and took my guitar. Before the show started, I went to the backstage door and knocked and knocked until security opened it. I told them I just wanted to leave my guitar (brand new Strat) with them, and, if Stevie had a chance, I'd like him to sign it.

The guy shrugged and took the guitar. I went in to see the show.

At the end - when he was doing the long-winded "Life Without You" (one of my fave tunes of his) I jumped up and ran out of the place, hoping to get back to the backstage door before everyone at the show decided to hit the backstage door.

I get there, knock, talk to a DIFFERENT security guard, explain what's going on, he says "hang on" and closes the door.

I'm freezing - it's January I think. 5 ro 10 minutes go by, and some old bald guy opens the door and says "you the kid with the guitar?" I nod and he says to follow him.

So, I walk throught the backstage area, past all the folks with backstage passes that are just hanging out hoping to see Stevie, and the guy leads me INTO his DRESSING ROOM.

There he is talking to Lenny. He REEKED of alchohol, but I didn't care. That's when I started in with the "you're a God" thing.

After I settled down, he opened the case and took at look at my strat. It was a regular old strat, nothing fancy, but I had a couple of tele pickups in the case, planning to switch them out, and so we talked about operating on guitars, looking for a better tone.

The thing that I remember, that still stands out to this day, was the callouses he had on the webbing between the index finger and the thumb... I never thought about guitar players getting callouses there, but sure enough, he had one - I guess from all the heavy strings, etc.

So, I asked him to sign the guitar "To Alicia, from Stevie". He asked me why Alicia, and I told him it was my girlfriend that had died from Leukemia, and I'd named the guitar that. He looked at Lenny all spooked and said that they were going to name their child Alicia.

Now, I never heard about them having children, so, I don't know if it was just future plans before he sobered up and left her, or what. But so, there you have it. I got to bond with Stevie Ray Vaughan for 30 minutes. We smoked a couple of cigarettes together (I saved the butt for 10 years) he gave me 3 psychedelic tortise-shell picks with his name on them, and autographed my guitar.

He was a GREAT guy, looking back and considering that he had no idea who I was, he'd just played a show and really had NO reason to talk to anybody after the gig... especially some kid that he didn't know, I really can't beleive that I DID get to meet him like that.

I gave away the picks, and traded the Strat for a Dr Rhythm II... on sale for a whopping $200 back then.

What a strange title for this thread, it's not Prince that will pay for the bills of course, but other people who like Prince, or people who like to make money.

Otan, that is a truly amazing story.

It is remarkable that he was so open, indeed after a show, but in a period
that was so close to his physical downfall. Stories like yours reflect the
truth in all that has been said regarding his persona - how he was open
and nice, almost humble to the people he came across, thankful that he
was so gifted, and thankful he could reach out to people.


I never got to see him play, due to my age, but meeting him is in another league!

One a side note, that was a cool story. My music teacher praise him to death, he met him backstage too and told us about how humble he was, no details of how they met or what they talked about tho.
