The robotic-sounding countdown in "Live 4 Love"

I'm wondering about the robotic-sounding countdown that begins "Live 4 Love" and previously in the unreleased "We Got Power".
Where is this from?
I know it is generally believed to be from the 1968 Roger Vadim science-fiction classic 'Barbarella'". But i'm not so sure it is...
I know it this fact(oid) is published in some books, but having watched 'Barbarella' more than once I never found it in the film.
So does anybody know for sure? Can you tell me where in the film it is, if indeed I overlooked it?
Is it perhaps somewhere on the OST album for the film ( by the Bob Crewe Generartion)?

I'm talking about the "Lauch procedure commence. Countdown start. 10, 9, 8 [etc.]" part.
The sample part that is next in "Live 4 Love" ('Acceleration into temporal state continuum now beginning') is indeed in the film, but not the countdown as far as I can tell...

So where DOES that come from?

Cheers, jooZt

As far as I know, it's Prince or an NPG member's voice put through effects to match the voice pattern of the Barbarella sample to ensure consistency, although im probably wrong

I always thought it was a band member's voice put through a Boss Flanger with the "RES" knob way up - I think that pedal was a favorite of his back in the day

Everytime I hear that I think of the "Starship Boney M" in Boney M's "Nightflight to Venus". LOL, smile, I'm a nerd.

It ain't from 'Barbarella'. The Barbarella sample is that funny voice you hear in the background of the music. It says something like 'Acceleration blagh blagh blagh ingnition...' sod it, U know what bit I mean.

Uhm, I have seen Barbarella 6 times and it is def from the
film.

It isn't credited in the linernotes since samples did not
have to be mentioned per se at that time yet, [right?]

Anyway, I would bet pretty much anything on it that it IS
from the movie. In fact, there's no need to bet. It just is.

I don't remember 100% but I do believe that the countdown
and the "accelleration into temporal state..." are in the
film at different moments.

The "acceleration" is earlier on in the movie and the
countdown sequence is from the moment her ship is headed
for a crash/collision course. And if I remember well, it
goes all the way through to 4,3,2,1 in the movie.

Prince cut it off at "4" for obvious reasons.

I think I actually still have the Barbarella tape somewhere in the attic. I'll dig it up tonight and look for that part to see if you're right.
I can't believe i missed it all these times...
I'll let you know if/when i finally locate it.
Cheers & regards,

It shouldn't be too hard to locate since you can ffwrd
all the bits where she's not in her spaceship cuz they
surely don't contain that sample. It's when she's on
board of the ship.

I found the tape and will start watching it as soon as my GF lets me (she's now watching Star Wars). Haha.

Anyway... I think I remember the scene you mention, it's in the first quarter or so of the film, I think.
However since her ship is crashing there. I somehow doubt you will hear a 'launch procedure' during it. Or you meant it's just before the crashing, when she goes on the mission to search for Durand Durand? ?
Anyway. We'll know soon enough. I'll let you know.
Cheers & regards.

I'm fairly certain that it is a sound effect. I have heard it on a CD of sound fx to be used for TV and movies. Prince does this alot. Once he discovered sound effects, he went sort of nuts with them. (crowd sounds in Pop Life, sword sounds in 7, etc.)
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

To my knowledge, Prince first used this countdown on the Lovesexy Tour. My tape of the LA Sports Arena show has the robotic countdown during the intro of Controversy.

That is true ! I discovered many sounds in a Philips soundseffects CD box that contains twenty CD's or something, from the dolphin sounds to the gong at the end of I like it there and the clock in The most beautiful Girl in the World.

The countdown was first used on "We Got The Power", recorded on October 15th 1988. From The Lovesexy show in Worcester (Oct 22) on Prince started using it in the intro of "Controversy".
Hence its first use was indeed in 1988, way before it was used on "Live 4 Love" which makes the theory it was taken from Barbarella together with the 'Acceleration into temporal state continuum now beginning'-sample. even more shaky. Furthermore the sound of those two samples isn't even remotely close.

I rewatched the movie yesterday and I'm now 100% sure its NOT from the film. (sorry IstenSzek, watch it again and see for yourself. It's Not in the scene you described or ANY other scene.)

My money is that it indeed comes from that sound FX collection CD-set. (by Philips?)

Oh, I just love that sound!

Although it doesn't really fit to the song... "Live4Love"...? Damn, that's almost a love song

Hmm, I must have a special edition of Barbarella I guess,
one where they included the "Live4Love" sample because it
sounded so cool. Yup, I'm convinced they re-edited the
original Barbarella film just to incorporate that little
Prince sample.

for the little gits amongst you, I am fcuz, only joking.
you're right joozt, I guess I made a mistake. My bad. I
could have sworn it was in there.

No biggie, IstenSzek.
