I posted this to Alt.Music.Prince ages ago and thought you guys might like to read it.
It's a certain video tape of Prince rehearsing, private video footage...it's not widely circulating or anything.

But maybe you'd be interested to read a description:


"Well i am not a master at description but i will do my best. Understand i have only watched the video 3 times, when i watch it more i will probably have more comments & "insights".

First off: the video recording clocks in at exactly 11:53(the first
portion of the video at least). It is filmed using a one camera setup mounted on a tripod.
The camera angle/position is fixed at all times.
There is no other person present except for Prince himself & there is no camera operator.

The quality of the video in my opinion is fourth generation, it is
slightly "muddy" looking. The audio track is hooked to a DAT deck or something of that nature.
Now the audio track is simply 3 tracks straight from the Batman
album, they are not live cuts or anything like that, he input the audio of three tracks on the Batman lp to the audio track of the camcorder. Those tracks being "trust" "lemon crush" & "scandalous", as on the album.

Now you cannot not hear anything in the audio track of the video footage but the 3 tracks stated above, Prince cannot be heard at anytime. Basically this video was filmed in the basement of Prince`s home in Chanhassen. It is said to have been filmed prior to rehearsals for the Nude tour in early 1990.

However my own personal view(with no evidence, just gut feeling) is
that it is earlier because Prince does not have a beard & his "look" is
closer to that of the Batman era, circa late 1989.

He is very casually dressed in a two piece very lose fitting pants & frilly type open cut shirt, chest bare, his outfit is peach in color or possibly light orange.
He looks very relaxed at all times but you sense he is "working".

This video was intended for no one or anything in particular, it is said to be "private" footage for Prince`s own use. Basically our man is doing what he is always doing, rehearsing & refining his talents.

The zoom is out full & you can see a very large backdrop that looks like blinds(see 1999 tour video`s), there is a small stage area or rise & it is not large enough to hold any musicians, so i assume it was just a stage rise for Prince to get the "feel" of a concert performance.

Overhead is a large rotating fan(see "Theives In The Temple" video)& a white light shinning down on the stage area. The area he is present in looks somewhat small but with a very high ceiling & is quite dark save one bright light overhead.

A microphine is set up & is chrome plated unlike the gold microphone stands he used on the Nude tour.
His mic is not connected to anything & basically Prince walks up on stage & begins to "mime" or lip-sync the words of "Scandalous" & "Lemon Crush" into the microphone as he dance`s like i have never seen him before.

Obviously the man is perfecting his dance moves as he does all manner of hand movements, sensual grinds, splits, spins & all manner of dance steps.

I belive myself that this is the primary function of the video, so he can watch it later & see his "stuff" on screen & perfect it later. In fact looking at it, it reminds me alot of his "performance" in the "Scandalous" promo video, alone at the mic, singing away & his "naughty" gestures to the mic stand.

Actually there is alot of "mic" work in the video & similar to what he did on the Nude tour, not quite what he did during his "Electric Man" routine on the Nude tour, but you get the idea.

But of course all this is my own personal views & the true nature of what this video is will probably be quite different. Overall it is interesting footage & quite "intimate" in nature.

The last section of the video is uncut or unused footage from the Graffiti Brdige film, i will describe this at another time.
