The transition from Graffiti Bridge to Diamonds and Pearls IMHO, the two albums are vastly different. Excluding the Time and other songs, the songs that Prince performs on GB are so superior to the ones on D&P. D&P is a good album but something lit a fire in Prince when he wrote GB. I wonder what made him change tactics quite suddenly going into D&P.

I totally agree. GB had some true gems - 'Elephants & Flowers', 'Joy In Repetition' - but D&P just a bunch of solid songs, that's it. "How embarrasing to be human!"

The process of creation involved with these two albums was vastly different here's my take on it:
Graffitti Bridge is a compilation of various "left over" tracks 'bridging' several years. In fact, I'd wager that there are probably not even many tracks on Graffitti Bridge that were recorded specifically for that project. Diamonds & Pearls was probably recorded in the more traditional manner of a Prince album -- something interesting that I read was that Dirty Mind was actually demos that were submitted to his record label! The Graffitti Bridge project actually contains a good portion of the songs recorded for the 4th The Time project Corporate World.

Diamonds and Pearls was WAY over-produced. GB has a much rawer feel to it, which I prefer. Even the title track, which leans into showtune territory, is not as chrome-plated as anything on D & P. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Hey KMC, how did you get a copy of that? What was on the front of it? The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. I thought Prince was going under "Jamie Starr" again for this album?

I have thought that GB was an excellent album for years and its content is much deeper than D&p.I think D&p was just sheer commercialism produced to please warner and not his main hardcore fans who love all his work. You need to give something to the mindless pop fans as well as the prince fans and D&p done it easily.
