BBC Liquid Assets - Prince's Millions I've just watched this programme, boy was it cynical. I guess it's the ongoing thing with the British media about how kooky and controlling he is. There were a number of issues that didn't relate to what I knew about Prince (I'll come back to you on those).
What did you guys/girls think? ..sharmone MF..!

As with any argument, it is difficult, in fact impossible 2 be objective when U dont have the views and opinions of the subject in question. Yes, it was cynical 2 some Xtent but thats just the British media 4 U. It was interesting enough 2 here the views of key players though. I didn't think it that cyncial, in fact i thought it was fairly fair and even. They started off saying what an excellent singer/songwriter he was.
There had to be some 'dirt' to keep people interested and don't forget no-one currently involved with P was interviewed. Some of those people had their own agenda's remember

Maybe I've not read the facts on this but here's a couple of things,
Towards the end of his contract with Warner he was close to bankrupcy, to end the deal, Warner decided to pay Prince £10 million and cut their losses. This therefore "saved" Prince and allowed him to continue making his music independently. He lost out on the D&P tour, apparently spending all the tour earnings on set design, hotel bills etc. He requests about £20k to play an aftershow, if they've not got the cash from the door then he ain't playin. But it does show his generous side, he gives the money as a present to the other band members, £1k each was reported at one aftershow. Let me think of some more... That he really got married to Mani? heheh. ..sharmone MF..!

I thought it was a pretty good programme, could have been a hatchet job, but was very fair and even.
The presenter appeared to know what he was talking about, and they got a good selection of interviewees. My fave bit - the Soul Sanctuary "stolen" debate. I would have preferred a bit more on the current situation - they didn't really mention NPGMC at all. Althought they did mention "around 100,000 hard-core fans". $25 x 100,000 = 2.5M Not bad!

To be fair it wasn't a bad programme at all. The whole thing was fair and balanced with the only real dirt coming from people who were associated 15 years or more ago. I think th whole thing was very good to Prince.
As for the 100,000 hard-core fans. Surely that is 5 times too few? -----------------------------------------

I agree that it wasn't very cynical. It was a bit crap, as I expected given the title, but did have new footage interview-wise and did, for all the little digs, give an overall pretty decent view of things, said he's doing very well at the end of the day.

Yeah I liked the fact that they ended with blurb about him being the happiest celebrity as he has complete control over his work.

Totally agree with your comments - I thought it was very fair. It was good to see new material on Prince, rather than the same old re-hashed rubbish that we have been fed for far too many years now. My favourite bit was at the end when they basically said that Prince must be one of the happiest celebs in the world, as he now controls all aspects of his business and is making a lot more money from it. To sum it up Liquid Assets thought that Prince was and is having the last laugh... Oh and by the way, anyone overseas that wants an NTSC copy of this program send me an email - I will trade it for other P stuff.

just watched the liquid assests programme and on the whole i quite enjoyed it. was pleasently surprised as it wasn't anti - prince as i had expected.what i did find interesting from the program is how he requests the door money on the aftershows.they tried to make out it was him only doing it for the money but eventually it came out he generously split the cash.not sure how accurate the actual sums were though. for instance at no time during the programme did they take into account the interest that his money would be accquiring whilst being in the bank.that itself has gotta pay a few bills doesn't it?
all in all good to hear bout prince again on uk tv. and yes ppl he is now having the last laugh on the music industry.

and he also apparently turned up at the London NPG store and demanded the first days takings.
Which were 30,000 pounds Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I finally managed to watch this last night (after spending all day Sunday frantically searching for someone who can pick up BBC3!).
Okay, its' approach was a bit tongue-in-cheek and some parts I found a little, er, embarrassing (mostly where they'd off-set something the presenter said with a kooky clip of Prince). But, overall, I really enjoyed it. It was particularly interesting to hear what ex-associates such as Bob Cavallo and Karen Krattinger had to say. (Poor woman! Just HOW much work did she have to do??!). I also got the impression that the presenter is a genuine fan of Prince; he may have criticised P's business acumen, but continually praised his 'addiction' to music and "once seen, never forgotten" live performances. Even if you wouldn't trust Prince an inch with your money (joke) at least you got the impression he lived like a real ARTIST. Prince may want to be "#1 at the bank", as he himself says, but not at the expense of his musical legacy. Plus, the film included much rare/alternate/single versions and rare footage. I've NEVER seen that 'Dirty Mind'-era live clip. Marvellous! As someone else mentioned, though, there was NO reference whatsoever to the NPGMC. Considering this has been his biggest venture for the last 3 years running, you think they would've included it. A BIG ommission! He must've made a killing on that alone and the live shows from last year. It makes one shed doubt on the final figure ($40 million). But, all-in-all, a really enjoyable programme and its great to see something devoted to Prince on tv. More please! [This message was edited Tue May 20 7:34:07 PDT 2003 by onenitealone]
