Honest discussion, ... Why do most of you dislike C & D

Honest answer,
It's a throwaway album. I like a few songs, but it wouldn't be any thing I run in my cd player constantly. Prince just threw something together for WB so he could get out of his contract without giving WB any quality material. __________________________________________________

C&D always brings up great memories because I bought it in NYC after seeing Prince in person performing on The Today Show.
But I have to admit that the songs lack that special something that makes me want to put the CD player on 'Repeat'.

When I first heard C & D, I thought it was some kind of mistake. It sounded like a bunch of songs thrown onto a cassette so you can listen to them while driving around in your car.
I, of course, listened to it repeatedly. I think C & D is very unique and I mean that in a positive way. To me, it all fits... rough production for rough songs. I wasn't surprised to hear though that it was "thrown together to get Prince out of his deal with Warner Brothers." When I heard that, it all made sense. Not my fave, but not my least fave either. I'm firmly planted in denial

Duckets like Kirby Pucket
Actually almost any of the lyrics on the album are enough to make me not like the album. . [This message was edited Fri May 9 14:04:40 PDT 2003 by lovemachine]

it's got a couple of memorable tunes, but most of it is just throwaway music. BY THE POWER INVESTED IN ME BY GOD ALL NEGATIVITY BOWS

I'm new to this board and am absolutely mystified by the dislike of this album. I've been a Prince fan since the beginning and Chaos was the record I always wanted him to make. I don't think he's put out a record as good since. I'd be interested to know as well a detailed reason why this record is so disliked, rather than a simplistic "because it sucks" type of answer. I love the rough guitar centered tunes. Everything since then has been a disapointment.

1) it was by no means up 2 his standard. if you've been in the purple realm since the beginnin, u know full well what his capabilities are and how he coulda done better on c & d. 2) like you've seen people say already: this album wuz no more than a throwaway effort, due 2 it bein his last album 4 warners. "contractual obligation". he wanted 2 get outta their hair and fast. c & d wuz the end result. 3) it just plain sux. ...welcome 2 the org, bige. edit in the toilet! it had 2 (well, 3 really) top-notch tracks:
- Same December - Into the Light/ I Will. Then there are a few that are nice, but run-of-the-mill by P's standards: - C&D - I like it there - Dinner w/ Delores - Zannalee Then there are a few that are blights on his discography: - i rock therefore i am - right the wrong so i put it as one of his weakest efforts, for the simple reason that so much of it (all but 3 tracks) is average to sub-par by P's standards.

Ok some of you do have a point but one of the things I like about it is that it has a raw sound to it. To me it was very different and kinda refreshing to hear him do something that was more rock oriented (sp, sorry it's late) and kind of out of his norm. Sure it wasn't his best work but I still think it was very good for what it was. Sure if you want to call it a throw away album fine, but I think the only reason why some of you don't like it is because Prince called it a Contract Obligation. I don't mean to offend by that statement so please don't throw rocks at me [This message was edited Fri May 9 21:46:37 PDT 2003 by fairlite]

Well except he said the same thing about The Vault and that ranks towards the upper half of all Prince releases IMO.

Dig U Better Dead is a good starting place.
Another factor is presentation (Think back to when an engaged Vanessa Huxtable brought Dabnus home with her to meet Cliff and Claire. Cliff mentioned something about getting a juicy steak and nice mashed potatoes served atop a garbage can lid.) The very art for the album suggests a rush job. Aside from the aforementioned song, Prince put out a decent album (I'd always wanted to hear him do country and "Right the Wrong" satisfied that). He presented it to the public as if it were little more than a collection of disposable songs, though. If the presentation, marketing and publicity for it had been different, its lasting impression (even among us, his diehards) likely would have been more positive.

i think it's the best 90s album from P. eamancipation was great but too long and C&D was a compact, quickie that left me breathless. sure it was a contractual obligation, but it rocked. it had every element a Prince album should have. in terms of varied musical styles, it's just like Purple Rain and SOTT. it is a varied album in my opinion.
i love it. well done, Prince. i like it better than TGE and i love that album. D&P is a lite-soul/funk extravaganza Symbol was more of the same and then Come was more of the same then C&D happened and boy did he open them valves.

I don't really have a problem with "chaos", though I don't ususally play it that often. He's done worse,IMO.
I think the reason why a lot of people don't like it is because it is asicly a throwaway album, his heart really wasn't into it, therefore it's no where near his best. It's okay, I guess. ~KiKi

This is what I tend to agree with BUT, from what you are saying is because Prince basicly left it to die Fans felt it wasn't worth it either and because of that they just assumed it sucked and made themselves believe it sucked because Prince wanted nothing to do with it.
