The people who did pay for the musical's production most probably also DGAF about what your feelings are toward musicals. They're not doing it for you or your brand of consumer!
Besides, the estate grants the playwright permissions to develop the musical--they don't necessarily sweat the details for the thing, so that's probably not much of a distracting element for the estate. > The person who wrote the stage script is a highly talented individual who I'm confident can tweak the story to make it interesting and impactful for the theater market. These productions do take time and money to develop, but once one is solidly assembled and delivered, the revenues from them can dwarf the revenues that come from song recordings alone. > The musical would be a triumph for the estate. I imagine that it would have a better chance of materializing than the next Prince documuentary.

Bream is a Minneapolis-based journalist and the thread was responding to the Star Tribune News to where he is affilated. I don't defend the estate managers much, but bizzie, U bein' silly right now!

. You mean the person who wrote it while taking six months more time than initially announced, then had their script rejected by the estate for having too much woke nonsense? And then they kept tweaking the musical while it was running and still plenty of people hated large parts of it. And now it's gonna take another year, maybe two? . Please inform me: at what point is the "talented" part coming in? .
. LMAO. Yeah sure, the thing that has been a bust so far, will obviously be great in two years time. Tell me, how many more millions will it need? Cuz we're at $26+ million. . [Edited 4/20/26 17:48pm]

I misread that tweet and thought he said “pretending to be like him,” when it’s “pretending to like him.” My bad. But even so, Prince was still inviting Bream to listening parties, and it seemed that they had a good rapport at the end. Can Londell say the same?

I guess I'd agree with the estate for nixing the initial passing down a script designed to "waken" the story. It's not that kind of story. Trying to empathize more with the "Wendy & Lisa" characters I guess. I'm not a playwright but I would hope that they skip assigning PC-ness and get down to the root of the story--to convey the turmoil and triumph of a band. A band with a bandleader from an effed-up home and a sad paternal model upon whom to base his intimate relationship moves, and WATCH THAT BANDMAN SIEZE REDEMPTION! (Youuw! Nikkayyy!!!) > If they ever do get a satisfying script done the investors could be finacially rewarded--it's the people with deep pockets who subsidize these speculative creative endeavors-- folks not like U or me who sweat at the notion of blowing mills of a cash stash on a fun idea. Perhaps some of the investors are actual fans of Prince who think it'd be cool to develop a theater piece that can mirror his works. I still think it'd be cool! That playwright's talent will prevail if the cash and the ideas don't run out.
U shine your light of inspiration, bizzie!

Reply w/quote - E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
. Yeah, it's weird. I saw a video from Funktopia where they were there at PP and were going to the meet-up but phones weren't allowed. But now their FB seems to be not available, so I can't link to the video... . Strange how so far nothing seems to have been reported.

. So it was "discussed before" in public (I assume), but now it is off the record. So likely the same BS as from last year's Celebration -- most of which has not happened nine months later -- but now it is secret. Make it make sense. .
. LMAO.

“My biggest issue is the ongoing lack of transparency, consistency, and professionalism from the estate leadership under Londell McMillan and Charles Spicer,” says longtime Prince follower Tarick Banton. “There’s a real communication gap. Fans aren’t expecting perfection. We understand there are challenges behind the scenes, but we’re given almost nothing to work with. Even basic updates about delays, hurdles, or long-term plans would go a long way in building trust and patience.” Adds diehard supporter Nichole M.: “They are not showing respect to Prince’s legacy and to the ones that are keeping it alive, his fans. Instead, they would rather spend their free time defending themselves on Twitter/Instagram and using Prince’s quotes to passive-aggressively talk down to his fans. They should instead take the criticism and use it to establish a better relationship with their potential consumers.”

. Once again a writer who knows jack shit and does not bother to research. . Couldn't even be bothered to get the title of Originals correct (no, it is not The Originals). . Shivers at the idea of selling Prince condoms, so obviously doesn't know that is merch Prince himself sold decades ago. . "The stalled Purple Rain stage show, slated for a 2027 premiere, is currently being revamped with help from some familiar Prince fan favorites." Newsflash: both of those people were working on the musical last year as well. There are articles about this. There's even video interviews with the both of them.

. A seven minute video to summarize a three hour Q&A, and she doesn't start actually talking about what was said until two minutes into the video. In-fucking-credible. . Not enough time to set un an online forum? They have been in charge for three and a half years! They have been getting constant criticism for months. They somehow have the time to source fake Prince quotes to put on social media, they have the time to throw insults at fans, but figuring out a way to talk to people online is too hard. . Trying very hard to work within the limitations they have? Again: BS. They were the ones yelling "the vault is free". And now we are supposed to believe the entire contents of the vault are mired in contractual problems, preventing them from releasing anything? . They start breaking under all the criticisms? I'm sorry, as we've said over and over again: try communicating. . Doing the best with all the skills they have and the abilities they have and the team they have? Yeah, we've already figured out they are incompetent. Also, they are the ones who fired the existing team and then didn't hire anyone until mere weeks ago or so. . None of these things are excuses, they are the causes us dumbass fans already figured out months ago and the estate gets a sad whenever we point this out. . Wasn't the RSD test pressings snafu debunked already? IIRC somone pointed out that those test pressings dated to years ago. Also RSD is twice a year. Also RSD is dumb and Prince never did jack shit for it and IIRC just about every thing the estate released for RSD was dumb shit like a repress of a single-disc 1999 release. . The line about the estate overthinking releases shows their incompetence. Stop wanting things to do "the best way possible". Just fucking release music.

. The video linked above says how the Q&A started with Lonnie talking at the people present for a long time at the start, and listing their accomplishments (I hope someone challenged him to list all 50 he was boasting about on Twitter). And the rest of it seems to have been him whining how hard is job is while accidentally revealing that the estate is incompetent.

. Oh, of course. But so far every version of the estate has just basically bungled that. I mean, how exciting would it have been to get Camille when they did the SOTT SDE? . The simple fact that the first six months of the year they basically don't do anything is just nuts. At most there's a vinyl re-release or the odd single, and one year they hurried out Originals to get rid of the TIDAL deal and so they could release 1999 SDE in the Fall. And then they often don't do anything until a Fall release. . It's just so infuriating. Just release a single unreleased track each month. How is that not possible?

At least a few medias are reproting the fans' frustrations... at long last! So far every review of Estate releases that I read didn't even mention the various glitches and errors (there was a problem of some sort on every major release). I fear this won't last beyond the 10th anniversary, but who knows, it may motivate them to coursecorrect.
