I always figured it was a wood stool or chair they were sitting on while recording.

I love these recorded mysteries! My rational guesses would be either a creaky guitar string or a squeaky swivel chair.

My strange guess--perhaps the noisy crank of a hurdy-gurdy warming up for an alternative version of the song that we don't get to hear?

That's always been my guess as well. Either a guitar string or a chair.

You can also ask Wendy on Instagram (Wigmusic), or Lisa...

Like Prince using a basketball on the recording of "The Question of U".

Well of course. But we also know what some creaky ass chair rattles off at Sunset Sound. lol

I'd say there's both in that song. The guitar string is a pretty classic sound to know. But goddamn that fucking chair or stool!

Prince was perfect in his outward appearance, but he had a scrappy way of recording, which we all love.

I doubt it's the chair.

If you listen closley, you hear that Wendy is tuning her guitar.
So - to my opinion - what you hear is her turning the tuning pegs of the guitar and the change in tension on the string she's tuning.

.
She might have reached to the tuner once but that is not what you hear throughout the song. It is fret noise AND a crackling chair, plus the occasional string slide noise.
