***NEW PODCAST EPS*** Lisa Coleman talks Bach & Bacharach, growing up with Wendy & joining Prince at 19.

Growing up next door to Wendy Melvoin and her family in Los Angeles, Lisa Coleman joined her first group - Waldorf Salad - as a child. Falling in love with the music of Burt Bacharach via her father, and Bach from her piano teacher, she flew to Minneapolis at the age of 19 to join Prince's new wave band.

As a founder member of Prince & The Revolution, she became a part of the sound of one of the most famous bands of the 20th century. She was with Prince from his Dirty Mind album and tour in 1980 to the Parade tour in 1986.

As one half of the musical duo Wendy & Lisa, after leaving Prince's band, they continued to record and release music before going on to be Emmy award winning composers for film and TV.

They've since gone on to work with other musical greats such as Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell and MeShell NdegeOcello. Lisa also released her own solo album, Collage, of instrumental piano pieces in 2019.

This is part 1 of her musical life story, as told to Sam Bleazard.

I never knew until this year that Bill Withers was Wendy and Susannah’s babysitter. I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but was there ever a “Waldorf Salad” album? The single certainly exists and a bunch of A@M promo materials.

Looking forward to listening to the podcast 😊

Right? That Bill Withers connection is wild. Such a small musical world! As for Waldorf Salad, there doesn’t seem to have been a full album, just that single and some A&M promotional material floating around. Lisa talks a bit about that early period in the episode, you’ll love it once you listen

I'm really looking forward to part 2 smile I hope Lisa casts further light on Sometimes it shows in April. I have a theory that the first version of that song from the For You era might be musically very different than the one on Parade, but I wonder if it shares any of the lyrics. The first version was on a tape that Dez Dickerson sold at auction back about 10 years ago, so it's out in the wild there somewhere...
