You had to call Paisley Park and hope somebody answered because Prince had banned outgoing international calls to save money...."

-

Seriously?

Was he that broke at the time?

Consideirng his local paper had multiple stories of him not paying his bills and causing serious financial stress on local businesses and bankrupting at least one...

Hmm. I call cap. Maybe they got Prince and MJ mixed up.

Bowie and Prince only met one time and that was the night of a Lovesexy after party at Paisley Park in 1988 if memory and Prince serve me correctly.

That's according to Prince, who told numerous lies over the years.

Why would he lie about that?

Makes no sense.

To me, the article reads as: Prince was almost contacted to be asked to work with Bowie. Lolz!

>

IMO, a collaboration probably wouldn't have developed between these 2 iconic people. They each had their own ideas and processes toward their writing--altho I've read that they both shared a similar ethic with regard to recording--rapid with few takes and flaws included. At any rate--again, IMO--Prince's ego alone would have prevented a collabo.

wink

I read somewhere else that Bowie figured Prince's career-span genre coverage to have been limited in scope. If truly he thought that says to me Bowie never focused much on the things that Prince was doing in his music.

This story has the ring of truth about it. It is a pity that they didn't play together.

“I know there was talk of getting Prince on the record, but negotiations broke down."

TBH, whatever that means, it's indeed not clear.

In my not so humble opinion :

This would've been a weird outcome if it ever happened. I think they would've clashed so hard and fast. I could be wrong of course. Both are from different planets!

Bowie was much more grounded, with a balanced humanity that Prince could never hope to match. He got along with everyone, was openly (British) honest, and always ready to talk. Which is something that can't be said about Prince in almost any way. Bowie was also capable of self-reflection (in interviews), and in fact not a very skilled musician on any instrument.

How those two could ever work together seems almost unimaginable to me.
Prince as a blood-driven artist was everything that Bowie was not, and vice versa. (But then again, Bowie never had to struggle as a black musician in a white rock 'n roll/pop world.)

Would've been a strange meet for sure. I can hardly imagine any outcome or result.

Yup. Trying working with Miles was a flop on record and on stage, as for Kate Bush, we ended up with a "who's going to mix your background vocals at the lowest volume possible" contest ("My Computer", "Why Should I Love You").

That said, it would have been great if played the silent way as an uncredited guest musician, with the news coming out years later, like for Madonna's Like A Prayer.

Was this not common knowledge? I seem to remember knowing this contemporaneous to that album's release...I know, as a Madonna non-fan, I sought out this album specifically to hear love song when the like a prayer album was being promoted...of course, I was already a vigilant prince fan by that time.
