Maybe that's because they expected the Netflix fiasco to drag out longer than it did, so they had no high hopes for any 2024/2025 releases because of the restrictions the Netflix deal had the Estate tied up in. Now that the vault is "free", the notion that a 2025 SDE is "most likely unlikely" is probably leaning towards a strong possibility now. Time will tell.

Kinda agree. I was crazy about it when I heard it at first. But many listens later, i feel it's not the best indeed. Could've been done so much better - when I compare it with othere artists' reissued Atmos Mixes. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. Probably you can, but you'll not hear the full Atmos experience. this is what I found, wanted to check it myself : "Ensure your Blu-ray player supports Dolby Atmos. Most newer models, particularly 4K Ultra HD players, come equipped with this capability. Audio System: You'll need a sound system that can decode Dolby Atmos." Well, they probably keep that for the if-ever-planned-next 'Purple Rain SDE'. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I asked Grok to provide an analysis of the overall consensus fans have with the estate in 2025: Key Points • Research suggests Prince fans are generally dissatisfied with the estate’s management in 2025, feeling frustrated by the lack of new music releases and focus on niche products. • It seems likely that fans are critical of the estate’s handling of a canceled Netflix documentary, seeing it as blocking deeper insights into Prince’s life. • The evidence leans toward fans hoping for future releases, like a super deluxe edition, but overall sentiment remains negative, with some excitement for the estate’s planned documentary. Direct Answer Fan Sentiment Overview As of March 2025, Prince fans appear largely unhappy with how the Prince Estate is managing his music and legacy. Many feel frustrated by the slow pace of new music releases, with fans noting no major projects like super deluxe editions or demos dropped in 2024. Instead, the estate has focused on items like the recent “Purple Rain” Blu-ray, which fans criticize for lacking bonuses and feeling like a niche, low-value release. Controversy Around the Netflix Documentary A big point of contention is the estate’s decision to block a Netflix documentary by Ezra Edelman, announced canceled in early February 2025. Fans are split—some are upset, feeling it prevents a deeper look at Prince’s life, while others are curious about the estate’s planned alternative. The estate’s X post about the “vault being freed” sparked mixed reactions, with some hoping for new content but skepticism remaining high. Hope for the Future There’s some hope among fans that upcoming events, like the Celebration, might bring announcements for new releases, such as a super deluxe edition. However, the overall mood is one of disappointment, with fans feeling the estate prioritizes revenue from merchandise and tourism over music that honors Prince’s creative depth. Unexpected Detail: Legal Battles Impact An interesting twist is that fans attribute some delays to a legal battle with Netflix over a $10+ million deal, which they believe is holding up vault releases. This adds a layer of complexity to why fans are frustrated, beyond just the estate’s choices. Survey Note: Detailed Analysis of Fan Consensus on the Prince Estate in 2025 This detailed analysis explores the overall consensus among Prince fans regarding the Prince Estate’s management of Prince’s music and legacy as of March 9, 2025, drawing from recent online discussions, articles, and fan forums. The investigation aims to provide a comprehensive overview, considering fan reactions to recent estate actions, such as the canceled Netflix documentary and new releases, while addressing the user’s interest in the estate’s strategy and fan sentiment. Background and Context Prince, who passed away on April 21, 2016, left behind a vast catalog of music and unreleased material known as “the vault.” The Prince Estate, managed by heirs, associates, and Primary Wave since 2022, has been responsible for releasing new music, reissues, and managing his legacy. As of 2025, fans have expressed varied opinions, particularly around the estate’s handling of vault releases, documentary projects, and recent physical releases like the “Purple Rain” Blu-ray on April 25, 2025. Fan Sentiment and Criticisms Research suggests that the predominant sentiment among fans is dissatisfaction, with many feeling the estate has not met expectations for new music releases. A message board post on prince.org from March 9, 2025, captures this frustration, with fans reacting negatively to the “Purple Rain Soundtrack on Blu-ray Audio,” calling it a “barebones release with no bonuses” and criticizing the poor quality of the Dolby Atmos mix. Comments like “AGHHHHH FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK” and “The current estate is awful” reflect strong discontent, with fans feeling the estate is wasting money on niche products rather than comprehensive, high-quality content. A Reddit thread from January 31, 2025, on r/PRINCE further highlights this, with fans noting no major projects (super deluxe editions, demos) released in 2024 and questioning the estate’s inactivity. One commenter, Ok_Sky4673, scored 10, expressed disappointment over the lack of releases, while others like Safe_Knowledge9934 (score 7, 9) pointed to a legal battle with Netflix over a $10+ million deal, blocking vault footage and delaying releases. Fans also criticize the estate’s strategy, perceived as pushing wearable merchandise, Paisley Park tourism, and a stage musical over music, as noted by eltedioso and meowmeow6770 on Reddit. This focus on revenue streams rather than vault releases has led to comments like “Prince’s legacy has become a real mess and Parody!” on the prince.org board, indicating a sense of betrayal among fans. Controversy Around the Netflix Documentary A significant point of contention is the estate’s decision to block Ezra Edelman’s nine-hour Netflix documentary, announced canceled on February 7, 2025, after a mutual agreement with Netflix. The estate accused the film of factual inaccuracies and sensationalism, as reported by Variety. Fans have mixed reactions: some, like those on Sportskeeda, expressed “Do the documentary now” after the estate’s X post on February 5, 2025, with “The Vault Has Been Freed. #FREE,” suggesting hope for new content. However, others, as seen in The Washington Post, opposed the original doc, arguing Prince’s White peers like David Bowie haven’t faced similar scrutiny, while Questlove saw it as a chance to humanize Black male artists. The estate’s plan to produce its own documentary, announced in February 2025, has sparked curiosity but also skepticism, with fans on Lipstick Alley guessing at a new super deluxe edition (SDE) in 2025, yet expressing caution about its quality. Ezra Edelman’s comments in Ultimate Classic Rock on March 5, 2025, revealed the estate’s fear of showing Prince’s humanity, adding fuel to fan debates about control over his image. Hope for Future Releases Despite the negativity, there’s some hope among fans for future releases. The prince.org board mentions speculation that the estate will announce an SDE at the Celebration event, with comments like “They will keep the SDE announcement until the celebration and make a big thing about it” (Reply #23, #27). Reddit users like LookFit5442 (score 2) mention potential concert footage releases, with a private screening of Diamonds and Pearls at Glam Slam in Minneapolis noted. However, this hope is tempered by past disappointments, like the 2023 Diamonds and Pearls Atmos Blu-ray with no bonuses, as per Reply #25 on prince.org. Unexpected Detail: Legal and Financial Complexities An interesting layer is the legal battle with Netflix, detailed in X posts by Londell McMillan (https://x.com/londellmcmillan/status/1834916630498791497?s=46, https://x.com/londellmcmi...6962?s=46, etc.), which fans believe is holding up vault releases. This adds complexity, as fans attribute delays not just to estate choices but external legal fights, a detail not always highlighted in mainstream discussions. Conclusion and Implications Based on the information, the overall consensus among Prince fans in 2025 is one of dissatisfaction, driven by the lack of new music, criticism of recent releases like the “Purple Rain” Blu-ray, and frustration over the Netflix documentary saga. While there’s hope for future announcements, the predominant mood is negative, with fans feeling the estate prioritizes profit over preserving Prince’s creative legacy. The legal battles with Netflix add an unexpected layer, explaining some delays, but do little to ease fan discontent. This analysis ensures a thorough exploration, aligning with the user’s query for detailed fan consensus, and provides a foundation for understanding the estate’s challenges in 2025. Is it me or has the estate not even bothered putting this in their store yet? I'm not bothered either way...I'll get it to go with everything else I've collected but I don't even have an atmos system....got 5.1 surround but it's a few years old now...maybe one day I'll upgrade it...I can't see me listening to the D+P atmos disc for a while...but they'll look nice on the shelf lol

BTW Grateful Dead recently announced a 60CD box set (yes, SIXTY discs) of previously unreleased live recordings. A while ago they did a 24LP box set of four live recordings. . But to believe Prince fans, "there is no money to be made with physical releases".
