FRICTION. 1981/Controversy Outtake… I know some of yall have heard it!!!

What’s it sound like?

In my mind it’s another rockabilly song Prince was so fond of at the time.

it was one of the tracks they let the attendees of the celebration hear and dance to,
last year. i seem to recall people describing it back then. so perhaps you can dig up
the threads about the celebration last year.

I have heard it at Celebration.
Unfortunately everyone was screaming and yelling at the people that were pulled on stage to mimic a dance contest.
It TOTALLY ruined the listening session.
You could hardly hear the song.
So disrespectful towards the song and the people who actually wanted to hear the song in stead of all these screaming idiots.

The song was soooo FUNKY. In the style of
Irresistible Bitch / Fill Me Up.
But even MORE funky.
I would totally love to hear this song again but then in a quiet room !!!!

It’s NOT rockabilly at all !

Appalling.

I'm very sorry for you. I would have been so pissed, too. People paying expensive tickets to attend and getting to hear some unreleased, uncirculating Prince material and doing this instead?

Bloody idiots indeed. They deserve to be listening to Pogues outtakes in a sailors' bar, not Prince's at Paisley Park.

On the other hand, if this is the kinda crowd that attends the celebrations, it shows how low the Estate has sunk, attracting bloody tourists who don't have a clue instead of respectful fans.

This shit is exactly why I'm tired of people saying Londell and Charles deserve more chances to "prove themselves". They've made nothing but incompetent moves for two years straight now. They're going to keep making incompetent moves because they're unqualified for their jobs.

insane how they didn't at least play the song 2 times if the first time people got to listen to it
there was such a lot of pandemonium going on during the first playback.

it would have chipped away a piece of my soul, being present for that lol

Silly question, but did people have to give their phones away? Did they get searched? Because in this day and age, I find it odd that no phone recording of the songs they played surfaced.

I've not been to PP for the Celebration, but I have been there for tours. During the tours, they absolutely confiscate your phone. You get it back at the end.

Nowadays people record things on their smartwatches. The quality is okay (mono, etc.). I do it for concerts and the result is "listenable". It's better than nothing and "low effort".

it was not roackabilly at all.

It was played loud on the PP sound system and maybe I was lucky based on who was around me but my listening experience was not spoiled by screaming at all and I LOVED IT!

I can't believe Prince sat on it - for me it was like another Extraloveable in that context - how can you not release such a great song.

Friction is pure slammin funk - something that would have been danced too big time - more akin to things like DMSR / Feel U Up- crossed with something funky by The Time.

the reaction was more like a concert - it wasn't disrespectful - it was more like a party once Friction started playing

not sure what you would expect - it wasn't like we were all there sitting like good boys and girls with headphones on silently listening

yes - because it was a dance track - they got people up on stage for a dance competition but the track was played loud on the sound system - unless someone was screaming in your ear - you could hear the song and for me, of the 10 or so songs they played from the vault Friction was the standout track

Remember Apollonia, Susan and Brenda being thrown out of PP for taking 1 picture of The Revolution playing live? Police and all... nearly got arrested.

I actually heard the song again from someone who recorded it.
And it was 50% screaming and chanting.

Yes it was like a concert but that was not the focus!
It was a listening session where, yes, people would sit and LISTEN to a song you will probably never hear in your life again (although I hope it’s released one day)

The focus was definitely the dancers and the contest in a concert style.
But that’s not what I paid for.
All the other sessions before this one were respectful and people really listened to what he had created.
Friction was degraded to background music for some amateur dancers and their loud supporters…
