thoughts from a long-time lurker

I have to admit that I come here at least once a week, I click on the forum button, and I hope. I am filled with expectation. I click on the forum link and I think:

"today is the day, today is finally the day where we get some news about a new SDE. Today is the day when they announce a vault series, or some new cool collection, or a download site for ephemera and oddities! TODAY!"

And so the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain comes and goes. A colored vinyl is available, but... errr... who cares.

I was perfectly happy with the Purple Rain that came out just after Prince died (well, not the horrible remaster), if only because some of those unreleased tracks were real favorites. I didn't mind the quality of a few of them either. Cassette quality sounded fine to me, as I had the old school muddy distorted versions we had to make do with since the 80's.

But WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Nothing really released at all? I've kept myself gloriously stupid about the running of his estate: the players, the family, the legalese, everything. But it feels like these are such EASY decisions to make about an artist's legacy. Don't these people in charge benefit from us buying new product? SO GET IT OUT.

the stupidity, or laziness, or ineptitude is astounding.

ALSO: we, the original fans who bought his vinyl albums WHEN THEY WERE ORIGINALLY RELEASED and dutifully bought the cassettes and then CDs, are not getting any younger. without some big push (like a comprehensive documentary about his life and career) a new young audience won't know who the hell he is in five years. and the rest of us will be gone in the next 20. NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT.

But they don't, and I don't understand why. They have to come here and read all of this. Perhaps there is a big secret giant release coming for the Christmas season, as has happened before. Perhaps! but still no leaks? It is nearly September. Give us something to look forward to!

Um, I think that is about it. Back to posting every few years. Carry on. I enjoy the sniping and pettiness.

XOXO

To be honest, I think we are all undergoing and expecting the exact same thing here.
We open our computer, click on the pre-programmed Prince.org icon (which is first or second on our computer screens, i presume wink ) and all of us drift on impossibly fulfilling expectations.... which then turn out to be “the same old same old nothing, no news at all.
-
But, honestly, rest assured that the folks at Prince LLC and The Estate know that we are all sitting around with half-century-old a fat wallet waiting for new releases.

Sure they realise all too well that we are eager for new releases, and are willing of instant deposit and even wait six months for just something or little.
But, they have apparently driven themselves legally ... into contracts and probably unreviewable decisions for the purpose of making a lot of money (there's nothing wrong with that tbh).
Well, it's only the wait that's left for all of us i'm affraid.

-
But, as I said in another post, let's not sit still in the meantime, and try to join forces, and make our voices heard about what formats and combined possibilities there still are left for possible (new) future plans, new possible releases.

-

Looking forward to your next post in a few years then. wink ...or sooner, when news is coming.

All good points but the reality is the people who run this estate don't give a damn about Prince or his fans.

They remind me of a pro sports owner who has no interest in winning so they pretend they are making a trade or signing a good player only 4 the deal 2 never happen. The fans get excited only 2 be let down yet again. Once this Estate got that initial windfall of the closed probate.......they are pretending. Now that the assets are now in their possession. Some have died, sold rights, and hired people who dont have Prince or the fans interest in mind.

The results are clear.

We can keep fooling ourselves but the reality is that less and less material will be released over time, even thou Prince more vault material than anyone. We will all be dead and gone and the vault material will still be unreleased. How the hell does this make any sense?

This is a sad state of affairs but once it was stated that Prince had no will, this was as predictable as rain. and that rain is NOT purple, it is just b.s.

It seems like they can't release the First Avenue '83 show due to Netflix and that's the reason they didn’t bother releasing any PR SDE this year which is really a shame. But how hard can it be to replace that show so they can release the set? Or is Netflix preventing the estate from releasing any PR concert footage? In that case, just release the prince SDE so we get something this year. They refuse to tell us about their plans, if there are any. At this point, I don't expect anything from the estate except more disappointment.

It’s a shame indeed because, not only are we NOT getting those two projects (SDE and 1st Avenue blu-ray),we are also not getting a 9-hour Prince documentary. One cancelled project after another. It’s ridiculous.

I’ve said this before: we should be getting at least two SDEs a year,in addition to live concert DVD/blu-ray sets. The music is already recorded! The shows are already filmed! I really don’t understand what the problem is.

It really bothers me that they still haven’t released the prince SDE since the set is ready to go. What’s the hold-up? What are they waiting for? It should have been released in December last year so they could've focused on the PR SDE this year, but it seems like we won't get that set either. The estate really deserves all the criticism they get smile

I think Love Symbol is 90% done. Just needed some extra vault tracks.
Parade SDE never got as far as people assumed. But could be next on the cards still.

bare with me....it was a good run folks but maybe its just over. They definitely aren't going to do what we think is so obvious. Streaming concerts releasing more music and whatnot seems such a simple and obvious avenue since Prince has so much material that could be used for this purpose.... so why is it not even being addressed as a possibility, especially since faithful fans are clamouring for it, seems almost negligent.

In comparison, the estate of 2pac did a better job of keeping his legacy alive IMO. There were actual singles released for 2pac after his death, videos, movies etc. Almost if promoting 2pac as if he was still alive. They kept his legacy alive by presenting him as a cultural icon, not dared to be forgotten. The estate seems to take for granted that people need to be reminded constantly because attention does eventually shift. My only fear is that the mishandling will lead to disinterest quicker than it did for 2pac.

Final point is there are so many more 2pac unreleased songs/albums that may never see the light of day for multiple reasons but mainly because of disinterest and promotion dollars needed for more releases, 2pac fans just have to deal with the fact that they may never hear those recordings and that may be what Prince fans may end up having to deal with as well. Anyway that's just my two.

I want to add my two cents onto this, have been a massive Prince fan for years and have looked and posted in several places. Hell over the last year I really got heavily into the mixing and remastering scene using AI generated stems and crowd removal (Billy Ash). So my passion was really high and I very much wanted to be part of the movement keeping Prince's legacy alive.

.

Yet something has happened recently, my enthusiasm has waned, it feels like the oxygen has left the room. Or maybe the air in the room has got stale. I don't know what the analogy is, but it feels like it is time to just get on with my life, move on and pursue other musical avenues.

.

If I had to take a guess, I would say that it is all about the shenanigans of the estate, and the mindless nonsensical decisions that HAVE BEEN made. Beyond that there are the nonsensical decisions that ARE BEING made right now. I am sure that the driving force behind these nonsensical decisions are all about individual selfish short term gain. Nothing to do with the music, the art, sharing the love or releasing the vault. It's all $$$$$$$

.

Knowing that McMillan is involved just takes me back to some of the crazy times in the past. I don't think he ever made a decent decision.

.

I think the big turning point for me has been the Netflix documentary. Knowing that this documentary has been ready for a year or two years or whatever. Knowing that the documentary was created by a very competent documentarian. It just drives me crazy that the music has been locked up due to a rights issue with the documentary.

.

Netflix clearly don't give a rats and they have billions of dollars to play around with so it's just a waiting game for them. Netflix has nothing to lose, and if they sit on this documentary for 10 years, 15 years, whatever, it's no big deal because ultimately when it is released (assuming it is released) then it amounts to new material for Netflix so they win.

.

The estate, and Prince fans have everything to lose in having to wait for a documentary because of the way it is tying up the vault music, the SDE releases et cetera et cetera.

.

I am 52 and I am sure that there are many older Prince fans out there we are not getting any younger, and I assure you this next generation is not rushing to be Prince fans, pay for his music or whatever. Will I be alive before the vault is releases? Who knows... I know many aren't (look at Cat.. RIP sad )

.

So if the estate don't care, because all they care about is money... then I will just move on and park my hope/expectations.

Absolutely agree with this!

Even on this very forum, things are waning.

I will always be a Prince fan, but like you I am just moving on, we've waited and waited for the music and the Estate kicks us in the teeth every.single.year!

I can't waste my time anymore on a losing situation that the Estate blocks everything and nothing new is coming out!

I mostly agree, but there are two points I'd quibble with.

First, while I agree the Estate is messing up, I don't think it can be blamed on greed. If they were greedy, they'd be releasing too much stuff and risking flooding the market. You make money by monetizing the Vault, not sitting on it. Rather than greed, I think the problem is simply incompetence. In other words, I'm sure there are a lot of greedy people out there would do a better job at promoting Prince's legacy than McMillain and Spicer.

Second, the Netfix documentary is holding up the release of certain music, but not all of it. The Estate didn't sign away complete control of Prince's entire catalogue to the documentarians. It's a far more narrow slice of content that's being held up. It probably includes things the First Avenue show that may be integral to the docmentary. But that doesn't mean they couldn't release the Love Symbol SDE or other outtakes. There are things that can be put out while we wait for the documentary to air.

Sadly too true... confused

Yeah,I feel like we have no choice but to just enjoy and celebrate Prince on our own.We can't rely on the Estate to do the right thing.I'm tired of waiting around, hoping we will get some incredible goodies from the vault.I have moved on.It's a shame but there's really nothing that we,the fans, can do.

Obviously, while some of the video content is held up by the Netflix mess, they're basically using this situation as an excuse for not releasing anything.

Neither PW nor MakeMillion$ give a shit about releasing what's in the Vault because they're after easy money and monetizing the Vault is not an easy cash grab as opposed to overpriced Celebrations and purple rain boots.

Exactly!!!!

.

I started going through audience live recordings and using AI to remove audience noise - Essentially creating my own collection of soundboards... i.e. celebarating Prince in my own way -

.

But it's too much work - I'd rather just enjoy life instead.
.
It's maddening - because the estate could be doing this (i.e. sharing the soundboard recordings, with a subscription package etc) - Gosh it's a licence to print money

.

At this point, I'm asking myself, why am I posting this here? - Am I a Prince fan, or a moaner??? I think it's cathatric and also good to know that I'm not alone.

.

It's reassuring to know that others feel that it's time to move on... and come back if something happens.

.

Peace - Out biggrin

I think... I've just made my peace with the idea that there will be loads of Prince music that I will not hear during my lifetime. He just made so much stuff! And with the current pace of official releases being glacial at best, and his diehard fanbase getting older too... yeah it's a bit of a downer but I'm okay with it.

One thing that helps is, I'm always discovering new Prince stuff via unofficial sources. Honestly that often holds more interest to me - I'm particularly interested in demos, alternate versions, and rehearsals / sound checks, anything like that pulls back the curtain on his musicianship and creativity, I love it. There's an almost endless supply of that stuff really, so I can live happily without any more big SDE sets.

I'd really like to see the Estate managing his digital catalogue a little better though. We shouldn't see the remasters and SDE sets supplant the original recordings in search results. We shouldn't separate Prince & the Revolution albums from Prince or Prince & the NPG. Also his side projects, all that material needs to be made available on streaming services and made easily discoverable. Just... someone who actually gives a shit about his work needs to be put in charge of fixing all that stuff. Same with incorrect lyrics and credits, all that stuff is so frustrating.

Krid

Not even a year has passed since the last SDE...

Depending on how you count, there have been 11 posthumous releases on various labels, not counting singles

https://goldiesparade.co....ce-albums/

That is actually quite a lot, and probably the same holds true now for such "legacy/SDE releases" than back in the day for the WB releases - there can be too much of a good thing.

It is probably a game of diminishing returns if you release more than one album every 1-2 years - so yes, while I would like to have as much unreleased Prince music as possible, I don't think we have gotten a bad deal so far

But yes, I would like to have more music, and rather a ATWIAD / Parade era release than a PR one - but that is just me...
