What instrument is playing the solo in thieves in the temple?

Is it a guitar? In this live performance from 92 he shouts out tommy barbarella before, so is it some kind of synth?

It's a sample from the harmonica on this song:

You'll hear it in the beginning, on the right channel.

Weird mix on I Can't Stand It. Why are the drums only on the left channel?

It was released in 1967. At the time, this mixing choice was quite frequent, for technical reasons (stereo switching being used before panning became available).

Panning technology was available by then, I guess what mattered more is that stereo wasn't that popular yet, and even the people who already had stereo systems at home had the speakers placed near each other, so stereo imaging had to be extreme to sound different. Also, most record companies were still focused on creating a great mono mix, stereo mixes were just done very quickly.

It always fascinates me how technological and/or financial/marketing limitations have shaped the music we listen to.

Yes, it sounds like the instrument in question is a synth rather than a guitar. Tommy Barbarella, a well-known keyboardist who played with Prince and The New Power Generation, was often featured on synthesizers during live performances. If Prince shouted out Tommy Barbarella before the instrument was played, it's likely referring to a synth or keyboard that Tommy was using during the performance.
