Princevault has made an interesting update to the page about this unreleased compilation:

However the idea of this album was already a decade older. A ballad compilation Simply titled: Prince: When 2 R In Love was already put together in December 1991.

In June 2000, it was listed as an option for visitors at Prince: A Celebration to vote on for Prince's next album (along with Crystal Ball Volume II, Madrid 2 Chicago, Roadhouse Garden, an unnamed live album, an unnamed rock guitar album, an unnamed album of cover versions and an undetermined new studio album).

The 1991 compilation had eleven tracks, a little over an hour in total, with a unique appearance of the full 8:01 version of Insatiable as penultimate track, while the other ten tracks were their previously released versions.

It is possible the track list had changed to include any ballads recorded since 1991, when Prince announced working on the project in late 2000.

It is not known, but possible that Prince planned to, or had, re-recorded the material when working on it in late 2000. Given his relationship with Warner Bros. at the time, it seems likely the album would include re-recorded versions (similar to A Celebration, announced the following year). However it is unknown if any tracks were re-recorded at the time. It’s also possible any tracks would have been recorded only if Prince decided to pursue this project further.

The 2000 incarnation of album did not receive many votes by visitors at Prince: A Celebration, however, and was ultimately abandoned.

What a strange project!

It's intriguing to figure out what could have been the mindset behind it back in 1991. Perhaps in order to boost the back catalogue at the expense of the sugar-coated Diamonds And Pearls? Or a first attempt to fulfill contractual obligations with WB?

What about the album of covers (Temptations, Joni) offered at the celebration? Does anyone have more information?

I like the track list, and I think it would have been a lovely listening experience. It kind of reminds me of Madonna's Something To Remember project, which I also enjoyed.

Thinking again on the original time frame of late 1991, I'm inclined to think this had to be a contractual release or a move towards WB (wasn't the following year when he signed the infamous contract with WB that marked the rest of the decade?).

Back in late 1991 he was on a creative roll, with a new band and about to embark on a world tour. It's hard to figure out Prince releasing a compilation of previously released stuff when he was actually scratching to release more new material.

The mindset in the year 2000 when he considered again the project was a very different one. Maybe he just threw in this collection into that list of 7 or 8 projects proposed at the Celebration for the sake of it and enlarge the list to overwhelming impact.

Did the babies over at PrinceVault private the "recent changes" list because of the discussion on this new info?

No one loves gatekeeping information that was meant to be public like they do, I hear that many knowledgeable people over the years have tried to reach out to have verified and sourced info added only to be rebuked by the staff over there. Very strange stuff!

Yeah, disappointed with that recent update. Until a couple of days ago or so, I used to do a daily check of changes and new pages. Now I’ll not bother. Another thing contributing to a waning interest.

No clue what that 12th song could be, or if this would be considered an "official" tracklist, since it's a handwritten CD to Mayte.
