If the Estate doesn't announce/release something GOOD within the next four months....

...I am just going to give up....

And by "GOOD" I mean MUSIC THAT'S NEW...

It's just rediculous...

I am going to take my Prince Fan Energy and transfer it to, I don't know, The Beatles or The Smiths or The Cure or The 1975!!!!

The silence from the estate is extremely frustrating smile It must be disappointing for Warners as well since the estate ruined the PR 40th anniversary with no interesting releases.

That's exactly what you need to do buddy. Surely Prince cannot be the only artist you like. While we wait, transfer that energy into other artists. They'll release new music when they're ready. It's not the end of the world.

I agree with your sentiment, but the problem is that this estate is never going to be "ready". They're completely content coasting by on overpriced merch, Celebration tickets, and reissues of the same shit everyone already has. Last year's D&P SDE was probably the last 'big' thing we'll see for a loooong time.

While this is quite likely that nothing of interest will be released in 2024, the D&P SDE, released in October 2023, was officially announced on August 24, 2023, so 2 months before the release.

Putting energies into other artists is lame though, mainly because other artists just simply do not have the potential trove of unreleased outtakes like Prince does.

The Cure, for example. All their outtakes have been known since I got into the band, like a year before I got into Prince. Literally Robert Smith is the opposite of Prince, his mopey fans whining about their "modern" work has resulted in a mere three albums in two decades.

It's why I get aghast when I visit reddit or one of the other Prince n00b haunts. They're constantly overwhelmed by Prince's catalogue--like that's the whole friggin' appeal of Prince is the excess, are these nerds just bitter they can't binge stream the entire oeuvre in 5 hours like they do all their other favs?

Anyway I don't get why everybody keeps acting like some magical announcement is right over the horizon. Literally Londel McMillions whoever said the Netflix deal will hold stuff up in perpetuity because of the first rights deal of the Netflix contract.

.

Are you seriously going to pretend we knew nothing about that set before the announcement? Its Deluxe Edition had leaked in March or so. The estate had already admitted it was coming but needed to coordinate with the record labels for its release.

Waiting for the Estate to get his shit together is like waiting for a turkey to fly.

They're seeking to void the Netflix deal in order to sell the rights to another platform.

So we might very well go back from zero and wait for that new documentary to be done before we can enjoy free Vault releases. Give it another 5 years.

That's funny. While writing what I wrote above, I had that little voice in my head: "Bart will certainly react to this." You never disappoint. lol

And, no, I'm not pretending we knew nothing about the D&P SDE. We've heard about it for years before it was officially announced. I know that. And you know that I know that.

I'm just saying that if the Estate decided to release anything ("something was coming this year"), they don't need to announce it 6 months in advance, especially if it's not a SDE box set. And especially if it's a couple of demo or random songs on YouTube.

Come on, guys (especially Bart) :

https://en.wikipedia.org/...of_charity

"In philosophy and rhetoric, the principle of charity or charitable interpretation requires interpreting a speaker's statements in the most rational way possible and, in the case of any argument, considering its best, strongest possible interpretation."

wink

I'm definitely not expecting anything in 2024. Especially anything "big" (SDE or other). I was just saying that the absence of communication from the Estate and the absence of new rumors doesn't necessarily mean we won't get anything (even a single track) before December 31, 2024. That's all.

Ready for what?

I find it hard to believe that SDE's are not planned years ahead, especially due to the legal shenanigans.

This Estate version has failed again: missed golden Marketing oppurtunities for the PR SDE.

Or maybe they want to promote the SDE with the musical next year.

Who knows, but the silence does not make any sense.

They DID come out with that bizarre "next twelve months" statement a little while back... As if we won't be getting the Purple Rain SDE until NEXT summer....

Yes they're probably dragging out the next release as much as possible.

I don't think this is going to be enough. For the Estate to make a move, I suggest you threaten commiting suicide in front of Paisley Park (or even better, a mass suicide if you find other participants, but personally I'll pass) lol

The celebration is pointless without any proper release, especially if it will go on for such a long time.

I still have no idea why they're putting so much emphasis on celebrating the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain but are opting out of any major releases in the window of the album/film's actual 40th anniversary. If they do end up releasing a Purple Rain SDE next year, it's going to make zero sense to market it as a "40th anniversary edition" in 2025, a whole year after the actual anniversary.

LILpoundCAKE

meanwhile, in another universe, all these ass hats sat down together year 1, never got anyone
else involved - let alone L.M. - and just set up a nice online store front where new shit would be
uploaded all of the time. a sort of stream of consciousness/go as we find it approach.

just for us super fans.

regular nicely curated box sets could still be released for us as well. us and perhaps a bit more
dumbed down for 'the general public'.

stuff like "Piano and a Micrphone 83" should have been released that way, and thus not made
it a 'major' release, for wich sde sets would have to be pushed back to a later date.

we could have had hundreds of different takes, demo versions, later rerecordings, mixes and
live renditions of songs. including so so soooo much stuff that doesn't really belong an any of
the future SDE releases.

it's not like these releases in such a store would generate that much press or hooplah. so they
would not detract from the major, promoted releases, the '1 release a year so as not to put too
much strain on the consumer who can only wrap they head around 12 new songs a year' stuff.

or the other way around, the SDE would not be the only thing to look forward to for hardcore
fans. it being, for example 'the year of purple rain' would not mean that now we'd have to wait
yet another year before there was even a slight chance we might get to hear "shameless" or
an alternate mix of "Train" etc.

plus full concerts. the full concerts! the rehearsals. the aftershows.

I think that even with my tight budget I'd have happily spent 500 bucks a year on such a site.

I guess it's not complete fantasy to think they could make somewhere between 5 and 10 mill
a year from such a scheme. besides the curated box sets and regular releases of the actual
real meat and bones stuff.

might not be a huge amount of money but it would go someway toward paying the power bills.
