I like Planet Earth smile It feels like Lion of Judah is very underrated and it's far better than the horrible Guitar song.

Well, I’m glad this stimulated some discussion, even someone going back and reevaluating. As I said, I hoped this would happen to me but it didn’t. The opposite. Maybe if I had just gone back to it individually, but listening in succession it just stood out.

MPLSound for example would be far from my top list, but it is mostly good music and there’s some great stuff on there. That’s the minimum I would expect to say for any Prince album and just can’t for PE. (At the time I hated the first two tracks from MPLSound but this time around I found them ok and actually got into Box of Chocolates which I had previously cringed at).

Yes.

It's a sultry Sade-inlfuenced record. Basically a "pop/R&B" version of the kind of elastic jazz The Rainbow Children showcases. TRC is the more esoteric side, Elixir is the more pop side, but they're both similar approaches instrumentally.

and lol why would you not even bother with a single track? It's still written/produced/arranged/per4med by Prince, other than the vocals.

I swear I've never seen another artist make his owns fans recoil when he doesn't sing his own lead vocals like Prince. Like Bruce Springstein fans got no problem choking down Patti Smith's "Because the Night", Kanye fans generally prefer his beats when other rappers are over them, even Billy Corgan fans don't mind those lame Taproot records he made.

But Prince doesn't sing the lead vocals and it's like "WHY would i bother with that COASTER?" I mean I dunno I assumed you were a fan of Prince songs, my mistake.

I was guilty of dismissing Elixer on release and only got into it recently. Some of his better sexy clever song-writing. The 'dirty blonde girl in 9 and half weeks' line is funny. Something U Already Know the highlight for me.

.

About Planet Earth, it's definitely the weakest tracks of the bunch from Lotus and 3121. Not a fan of Lion Of Judah, All The Midnights and Resolution at all.

.

And I can't take the title track serious with the Barry Manilow Could it Be Magic interlude.

I wonder if Bria realized the "dirty blonde girl in 9 and half weeks" line is about an actual ex. Hilarious.

Exactly! Guitar is the weakest track on there, and is the song that made me ignore the album when it first came out.

I think Planet Earth is the weakest of all albums released under the Prince name.
I don't like listening to it. Some good songs here and there, but too brickwalled to my ears.

When P decided 2 release this as a free handout, he literally went 2 his pick list and grabbed subpar songs, called something random, PE, handed it 2 the news paper, got his check and went home.

Sorry, but I will never will be fan of that one. The riff sounds a lot like U2s I Will Follow.

I think this record and 20Ten are unfairly underrated, possibly because they were given away for free. I like them both quite a bit. Definitely more than MPLSound, which only has one song that I go back to - Ol' Skool Company.

It was given away for free to promote a concert during which he was mainly going to play hits. It just had to get people talking. It didn't really have to be good.

I agree that they're underrated, especially PE which is a better album than 3121 imo.

I like some songs but I don't usually go back to that album and I think it's his weakest. I even prefer Rave over Planet Earth.

Not one of my favorites by a long shot, but I did buy the vinyl reissue for the sake of having that big ol' lenticular cover.

Opinions are like.....

"Planet Earth" is a very very good album. Better than Lotusflower.

From day one I removed 'Guitar' from the album and without it it's a really good album.

The 3121.com download version of Guitar is actually a bit better but I can't stand the album version.

Typical...an album with such high quaility like Chelsea Rodgers, Future Baby, Resolution and Somewhere Here On Earth and such intersting oddiites like All the Midnights can be dismissed as weak album.....just speaks to his high quality throughout the career.

Planet Earth is a damn good album. Just as good as 3121 and better than Lotus. Every fan has that one Prince album they don't get all the hate for...and this is mine. wink

It's good some people can enjoy the album. I haven't heard it in years, this past year listened to both 3121 and Lotus. To me those are much better than Planet Earth. PE is still better than Rainbow Children, I can't get into that album at all.

Prince put something next 2 nothing in picking the songs for this "free" album.

He literally picked x songs from a pick list, printed it up and had them delivered to that News Paper.
