The Vault: Old Friends For Sale on vinyl? How did I miss it?

So, I had a look at the Prince Estate website yesterday and discovered that there was a new release that I had no idea was happening!
I've always loved The Vault: Old Friends For Sale but I had no idea how this release slipped my attention. Anyone else experienced this? Or am I falling off the purple bus?😎✌️🎸

I only found out about it a week ago. Every once in a while I'll do a search on Amazon for Prince vinyl, and that's when I saw it was a preorder getting released on the 23rd.
The estate sure doesn't miss a beat when it comes to featuring T-shirts, hoodies and £*#@ing slippers in their ads, though. But actual music releases...naw, let the fans find out about those releases on their own.

Something's up with that thread, I can't reply to it. I just popped in to say that Amazon's ETA for my shipment of this record went from April 15, to welp it'll be there Friday lol. I haven't spun it yet but it seems cool enough. Keep 'em coming! I really want to see a New PowerSoul vinyl, maybe I'm dreamin.

That thread must have self-locked, for some reason. Was going to contact the mod (Langebleu) but got distracted, so good someone has opened a new one.

After a few years of not hearing it, I listened again to the first few songs yesterday, sort of the first side of the vinyl, and there are some decent tunes on there. They are at least as good, if not better than on the recent D&P SDE vault discs. If you’ve not heard it before, you should be pleasantly surprised with it. Quite bluesy, jazzy in places with a lot of good musicianship.
There may or may not be something coming!

The relevant point here should be : what is the vinyl version brings compared to the CD version, besides a larger picture cover and crackings ?

It seems like this release isn't important to the estate. They haven't mentioned anything about it on Facebook or X.

No, but I don't see the point in having Prince CD album, that were thought only to be released on CD in its sequencing, released on vinyl, if there s bo improvement at all.
Sure there are beautiful objects, and I bought manumy of them. But that sounded terrible on vinyl.

I picked up my copy today from JG Windows in Newcastle upon Tyne (a fine old institution of the North East of England!) I have to say that I'm really impressed with the vinyl and the jazzy feel to the album suits vinyl down to the ground.
It sounds warm and rich to my ears and it's well worth the investment of £25!
Shame on the Prince Estate for not promoting this one, it's a gem of the crown jewels 😎✌️🎸

Oh, I can explain that: some Prince fans like to collect vinyl LPs.

The CD version will continue to exist despite the vinyl release, don't worry. All that has happened here is that an album has been made available on vinyl, for the people who want to buy it. Sounds like that's not you. Glad I could help!

@rodserling & @MsNia I think you are both kinda right. The Truth hasn’t had a standalone CD release, only as part of the Crystal Ball release back in 1998

https://princevault.com/i..._The_Truth

It’s nice to have the option of vinyl or CD but with re-issues on vinyl it’s even better if there’s something extra, e.g. better sound (has the 180g vinyl made a difference to that for The Vault…Old Friends?), or more details in the album cover (additional album credits, lyrics or background to the recording).

@Mackapolis44, as you seem to be the only person on here who has bought it vinyl, anything you are able to share about differences between the CD (whether original 1999 or 2022 reissue) and the vinyl version? Anyone else out there, who’s got this?

The cover is exactly the same and the tracklist is identical. The inner sleeve is redesigned but it's basically a riff on the inner cd artwork, no further pictures of Prince and I don't think there's any more info.

I run my Lenco turntable through a Panasonic amplifier and the record does sound better to me but I would never claim to be an audiophile. As I said, I'm over the moon to plug a hole in my Prince vinyl collection and I think it offers value for money in terms of that but don't expect any extras. Hope this helps 😎✌️🎸

I bought it two days ago. I make vinyl records for a living myself, and think this one is great. Very good pressing. The only reason this was a CD-only release initially, is that the major labels didnt give two shits about vinyl in 1999 - so I think it's about time this was rectified.

Thanks.

I always thought that the quality of those reissues were less.

SInce you're the expert, maybe I'm going to get me a copy. smile

There are still 5 copies in my local records shop. Been there three times since two weeks, and was constantly in doubt. They coul've been more original with the sleeve stickers though. All looks so poor.

If I had the tech know how, I’d like to see if there any audible difference between the original CD, the re-issue CD, the Warners 180g vinyl (for Europe, etc.), and the Sony 140g vinyl for the USA. But I haven’t.

I got one here in the States and think it sounds great. In general all of the P reissues that I've gotten have sounded great. Come, Gold Experience, Vault, C&D...

What are the differences between the original CD and the re-issue CD?

Thanks for the comment Sexton, always welcome your input 👏

The original thread Bizzie started had its last comment on 4th Feb, which is less than 60 days, so seemed a bit odd. But it was nice that another person wanted to keep up the conversation and started a new thread, and thanks to langebleu who made it a sticky. I think us on the org are doing more promo for this release than the record labels! Not nearly as much engagement as back in the day on here but it s nice to see old school org members coming back and commenting every now and then, plus new members being stoked too.

Until the next release of new stuff, all the best y’all.

Allow me to clarify: bizzie started the original thread on December 13th so it would have locked around February 13th no matter how much activity the thread received before then.

To keep on topic, When the lights go down is a great track on this album, by the way.

None, except the packaging is cheaper( digipack vs crystal).
For Musicology the video of the eponym symingle has disappeared.
