Dave Letterman and Paul Shaffer talk about Prince

Here.

Interesting that Dave says he never knew why he and Prince apparently had a disconnect. Dave is sorta known for living in a bubble like that, just not in touch with the outside world, especially in those days.

You make fun of someone so insistently etc, and why would that person wanna be around you?

It's just who Dave was, and I don't blame him for it. Prince was goin' thru his own shit at the time, and he probably wanted someone he could trust on TV. It just wasn't going to be Dave.

I should add that Paul had a pretty great and positive story about Prince during his residency days at the Rio.

Did Dave mock Prince a lot in the 80s?

The Leno allegiance in the 90s was always odd to me. Surely Jay was making symbol / "artist formerly known as" jokes with the rest of America? Literally everyone was roasting the name change in those days.

He certainly had fun with the prince rename. I mean, who didn't?

I'm not sure which host you're referring to, there.

But that's my point. Did Dave say something particularly egregious, was it like Johnny Carson and Wayne Newton? Because otherwise I've always found it kind of distinct that Prince was clearly Team Jay and paid Letterman dust. Dude was doing little comedy skits with Jay and literally dancing his way to Leno's couch for a post-set interview without a commercial break. Even Tavis Smiley didn't have the BFF energy Prince gave Jay.

I think you missed the point…

You suggested Prince didn’t connect with Dave because Dave made fun of him.

But Jay made fun of Prince too, but that didn’t stop Prince from bonding with Jay.

So the reason Prince didn’t gel with Dave can’t be as simple as Dave’s jokes. There must be something more.

Eh, maybe. I think it was personalities. Dave's style - while funny - is very different than Leno's style of humor. Jokes are jokes, but Prince has said that certain people never "came at" him "that way." I think it's just perspective, really. Prince perceived Dave's humor as more disrespectful than Jay's perhaps. Sometimes, you just gel better with one person than another for no particular reason.
