And what about the edited version specifically made for the US radio ? IIRC it's on the Ultimate Prince.

In the UK, the BBC made their own edit shortly after reviewing the promo. They made a big hype about this song being an exclusive, and how they needed their engineers on standby to make it allowable on air. Their solution was to splice in a guitar lick from Levi’s solo. It remember it being great, and was disappointed with the Prince official edit.

So anyway, in the UK we got as the buzz of profanity without the actual act, and it worked well pretty well on the charts. People here all remember that song.

It's impossible to say because even if it flopped it was more because he was out of his prime years, anything around the name change era was t really going anywhere. Emancipation and that time was more about selling a record, times were changing no more physical singles for the most part they existed but it was the 90s the label wanted you to buy the record not a single anymore, that mindset in America at least was gone with the 80s, because you had vinyl 45s and 12" singles which were actually pretty good pay days for the artist too. I saw someone listed take me with you and I think that was more to bring some kind of attention to Apollonia 6 more, maybe even prince suggested it, because to me I would have said go with "the beautiful ones" as the last single.

Where they clarified what going 'gold' on the VHS meant and the physically scanned copies sold

Was looking for that BBC radio/video version with the Levi lick, as it sounded so much better than the actual ‘clean’ version. Only place I was able to find it was on a ‘u toob’ Top Of the Pops from 23 July 1992 a month or so back but looked again and it seems to have a gone!
There may or may not be something coming!

Two of the singles . . . Sexy MF and TMBGITW were released wayyy too early.

In the case of TMBGITW, the original release wasn't even WB, it was independent.

Otherwise . . . Te Amo Corazon was probably the weakest lead-off single.

I always thought TGRES was a weak leading single, but a great song. For an album full of celebrity co-stars, he didn't release one of those songs first . . .

Found it - 2:18:58 into this mixcloud link of the BBC Radio One chart show from 26th July 1992, the BBC DJ, Mark Goodier, introduces the ‘clean’ BBC engineer edit of Sexy MF. Hope this link works, it was a bit of a mission to find it, but thankfully heard it again after about 30 years, yes.

https://m.mixcloud.com/es...k-goodier/

I have to say this was a bit of a holy grail for me, and if there is ‘Love Symbol’ super deluxe, this edit should be on the edit and b-sides disc but probably won’t be. If anybody on here is tech minded they should rip the segment on this before it gets lost.

By the way, Sexy MF must have been released in July 1992 so it coincided with the UK leg of the D&P tour. Prince must have been an early adopter of releasing stuff to promote tours, as the singles scene was to starting to die on its arse about then. Still managed to get to number 4 in the UK though, which is pretty impressive for a song containing the word f#&k, may be the highest position for a song with a cuss word in the title?! Also Mark Goodier was a pretty strong supporter of Prince in the early 90s, I remember him playing Get Wild remixes on his evening show when that came out.

Lol it sounds odd.
But its just a silly song, with or without the f bomb in there
As a teenager it had the appeal of using a bad word but as a song it just sounds like someone trying too hard but also not trying hard enough in an era of the chronic and doggystyle.

I also had a version on Chris Moyles' BBC Radio 1 show (in around 2001) that replaced the offending word with a hilarious 'boing' sound.

*"Glam Slam"---I think this is a decent album track but it didn't stand a chance on pop radio in 1988.I have always felt that the dynamic title track should have been the second single.

*"If I Was Your Girlfriend"---Yes,this song is clearly a fan favorite and it really is a brilliant track. But this is not the type of song that works as a single. The meaning was misunderstood by the masses and the SOTT album started tumbling down the charts when this was the single.

*"Mountains"---It's a good song, but not an outstanding one. Many people have said that "Girls And Boys" should have been the second single and I agree.

*"The Morning Papers"---The Symbol album was filled with so many strong, catchy, potential hit singles.Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them. It's a decent but uneventful track.

Gotta disagree on The Morning Papers. It's a great song and extremely catchy. It deserved better chart success.

Maybe in the 80s that coulda charted by no chance in the 90s. Grunge in one corner, shoegaze in another and Prince is putting out rock material like "The Morning Papers"...

A big Thank you for your research! A fantastic time-capsule.
I listened to the whole top 40 : it s like 25 songs out of it are dance remixes ! What a miracle to hear songs like Jesus He Knows Me from Genesis.

Funny too : MJ's Who Is It is #10, while Sexy MF is #9.
MJ is also well represented : Show You The Way To Go cover by Danni Minogue is #31, and I'Ll Be There cover by Mariah Carey is #15.

I don't like that edit from BBC though. I don't think it's better than the official edit. In France, the song wasn't edited and that was it.

But still, thanks for the trip.

When 1st listening of the album, both Morning Papers and God...made a very good impression to me, so that proves they were easy listening and potential hits.
Morning Papers has a very good start, but after one minute it jist goes flat IMHO.

If I were Prince/WB, I would have gone with And God Created Women instead. But for a 5th single, Morning Papers had honorable charts Worldwide. Not sure that And God... would have really made the difference. The album was already dead chart-wise anyway.

If they hadn't gone with Morning Papers, we would have said it was a better single instead of God..., That would have made in the #30 or #40 something.

Really, what killed the momentum of this album was the fact it was released way too long after the lead single Sexy MF.

I can only imagine the max being a single.
There were several singles from that album already.
None of them except 7 did much.
None of those singles were of the same caliber as those from d+p.
