From what she says, she just had... "a melody."

Nothing else. And she didn't know if she wanted to make a ballad out of it.

Sound great craftmanship if you aske me.

Yeah... blah-blah, she was nervous being around Prince.

I think Prince was bored. Simly didn't see or hear much potential.

She was doing songs with a lot of samples at the time,

versus,

Prince says you got to make your own thang.

Uh-huh.

Next. smile

Bash me but i never liked Mariah Scarey's songs.

I think she was way too talented and independent to be a Prince protegee biggrin

But just because someone works with Prince doesn't make them a protege. Was Madonna a protege? Of course not. It was a collab.

It was a missed opportunity for sure. They could've had an amazing ballad.

Such an uninformed comment. No matter what you think of her, she worked to get to where she is. She burst out the gate, had one hell of a run, and then she fizzled, and never hit the high points that she once hit. She's had her ups and downs, and very public struggles. But at the end of it all, she worked to get to where she is. I've never really liked anything she did after Music Box, and that was 30 years ago. But overrated? Hardly. Her talent took her to the top.

I would agree. We don't owe it to Mariah to enjoy her music. There are people who don't like Prince or his music. But would they say he's just not talented or wildly overrated? Unlikely.

Mariah is in her IDGAF era, and good for her. I will say she does become a bit intolerable with some of her behavior (just the attitude in interviews or whatever), but it's mostly harmless. It's her life.

Her talent is undeniable, though. The voice is on the level of the best we've heard in our lifetimes. She is where she's at because of talent and hardwork. Clearly she worked too hard and did herself in when she had her breakdown. But she recovered and continued to do well. There are those who have massive promotion machines behind them, but did they last? Was there ever talent? There's a laundry list of truly overhyped and undertalened hasbeens out there.

Mariah Angela Carey is not one of those.

I have liked things pasted MusicBox. I don't own all her albums, but I loved songs like "Honey," "Fantasy," "Always Be My Baby," "One Sweet Day" (although overplayed more than any other it seems), "Heartbreaker," "We Belong Together," "Shake It Off," "Touch My Body." In the last decade, she's sorta lost me a bit. I can't get past "Me. I Am Mariah. The elusi..." stop. Just stop that shit. lol lol

My favorite jam, hands down, is "Make It Happen." It got me through tech school when I was living on $24 a month after rent and bus fare. "That's less than 80¢ a day..." razz

Mariah is properly rated. She's got a % material for everyone unless you're just willfully contrarian

It totally makes them a protege and that's the function Madonna basically served on "Love Song", which was all Prince-ly weird funk with no discernable elements of Madge.

I love Mariah, but she would've had no problems playing the role of glorified protege yet still cranking up the performance to the next level.

A good example would be the song she did with Rick James, "All My Life", where she goes full Mary Jane Girls.
