D&P: Jughead - hot take

I am not here to defend "Jughead". It still doesn't work for me as a Prince song. I can appreciate the construction, the rhythms... yet I can't let it into my heart fully.

.

BUT...

.

As I watching the concert on the D&P SDE Blu-Ray, it hit me: We'd be talking about "Jughead" differently if it had been recorded by Digital Underground. The song is much more in their wheelhouse than the NPG's.

.

Slow it down a tad, let Humpty do his thing... and it would be a classic.

There is an inherent funkiness to "Jughead." It's a bit overproduced. Strip out about 3 or 4 tracks (including that corny ass synth hit), and put a melody over it, and you'd have a great song. The Glam Slam show brings that to the forefront a bit.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

who's to say prince didnt already do that .. and its sitting in the vault right now

they barely gave us a crumb of what is still in the vault around diamonds and pearls, full songs created and just sitting in the vault ... im sure of it

as you will see when super deluxe purple rain comes out .. that will also be a crumb compared to how many songs he recorded around that time

there is a 2nd purple rain (all different songs) type album in the vault that ive heard is mind boggling

will we ever get to hear it ? doubtful

Fully agree.

I bet just on rehearsals with the NPG lay the cream of of the crop (and no pun intended). Don't give us "Darkside", get that tape rolling and give us the full session!

Uh, they did, it's called "Blood on the Sheets."

Also, I don't necessarily believe there's a singing version of "Jughead." Because if there was, why isn't it somewhere on this album? But they gave us "The Last Dance" instead, which is the same track.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
