Purple Rain 40th Anniversary: Next Year Is Gonna Be Huge!!!!!!!!

Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain. I truly believe that 2024 is gonna be huge for Prince, the only downfall of it all is that he (physically) is no longer with us. But we shouldn't let that stop us from celebrating his life, legacy and music. 1999 brought Prince to the top, but it was Purple Rain that really took him into orbit. I'll never forget when it went to see the movie in the theaters, I was almost 10, that was the first time I ever heard Prince speak in the film and he knew how to pick gorgeous and talented women too. Apollonia was gorgeous, no doubt. Morris Day and Jerome Benton were the comic relief of the whole film, Morris being the womanizing, comical clown and Jerome being his 'ass-kissing' sidekick (in a good and funny way), their highlight was straegizing on how Morris was going to get Apollonia (possibly to be one of his side pieces, probably) and then they go in that (now) 'famous and iconic' password scene. Hilarious! The Revolution even had a few speaking parts too, especially Wendy and Lisa, boy were they cold as glacier to 'The Kid", but in return he was the same way towards them. I felt bad for BrownMark though, he didn't have one line throught the whole film. Clarence Williams, III and Olga Karlatos were perfect as The Kid's toxic parents and Billy Sparks.....well, you know. And then you have Prince himself, who did it all, although he wasn't experienced in acting, he act, sing and performed his heart out and gave you his all for almost 2 hours. There was nothing boring in that film (IMO) and the music kept you on your toes keep it fresh and exciting, even Dez Dickerson rocked it on there, even though only for a few seconds. What are your opinions? Are you excited for next year? What would you like to see Prince's estate do next year for PR? Comment down below!

"Next Year is Gonna Be Huge" should be the org motto.

I'm actually quite excited about the idea of a SDE of "Purple Rain", for a single reason: the sooner they release it, the sooner they can focus on something else. lol

High likely won't happen but I would kill for all the longer versions of all the album tracks, but they didn't even do this for any of the other SDE's so this will be another incomplete SDE release. at least it's something.

Chances are they skip it and give 'Parade' a priority, just imagine. wink

Though, PR SDE with indeed longer takes of the known songs would be a game changer !

And isn't it time for another take on the SDE formula?

A good addition would be the Dolby-Atmos version of the album. Hell of all unreleased songs. wink

But please, not AGAIN the Syracuse Live release. Not even in Dolby-Atmos.

-

It could be a fantastic package if they include the Apollonia 6, The Time, & The Modernaires as remasters with outttakes and all other versions...

Actually they should make these side projects availble through donwload/stream only.

It would make the SDE package affordable, and dig new ways of spreading more material for true fans. Can iamgine not everyone is interested in extended protégees stuff on extra vinyls or CDs.

Yes, that would be great. That insane and unhealthy obsession with vinyl can't stop soon enough. Release all the audio cassettes and 8-track cartridges you want, if you need to, but do it on the side, with a very low priority. confused

I agree. I bought the vinyl version SDE of D&P yesterday (and ordered the CD version when it came up on Amazon) because I pre-ordered it 3 years ago, if i had done it this year I would have only ordered the CD version.
Hopefully they'll rework there plans for SDE's and give us more because the D&P SDE is severly lacking IMO. Its like a half release.

The Modernaires? Don't you mean "Modernaire" by Dez Dickerson?

... no buyer will say to themselves: “Hey, this is the 40th anniversary of 'Purple Rain', then I'll snap it up quickly! But only because this is an anniversary - otherwise it wouldn't be an option!” Anniversaries make sense for artists with a narrower discography. But Prince has released more than three dozen albums. He celebrates some kind of anniversary every year. We look at the calendar every year and every year it flashes at us: anniversary, anniversary, anniversary! The options are simply very large. Our philosophy is: Better have them right, then have them right now. Sometimes you only have one shot. And in the back of my mind, Prince's implicit mandate to do it the way he would do it. We have to dig very deep into the archives for this. It takes the best songs, the best photos, the best concerts, the best videos."

I moaned about this last year on the org, but I totally agree. No Time CD Reissues (just do one compilation and be done with it), still no "Corporate world" anywhere etc...Vanity 6, Appolonia 6, The Family....make these affordable with worthwhile extra's again!

theyre doing them well.

are they doing them 'right'? well kinda, but not 100%. if they were doing it 100% right, no one would moan about obvious songs being left off.

I would be happy if they just remaster the original album properly...but will be most happy if they include some of the vault stuff (Computer Blue, Love and S etc) and use the masters. The Deluxe edition had muddy versions that don't sound good.

You just know they will include some great live shows...

I'd prefer an audio of the Purple Rain shows from 2/23/85 in Inglewood and 3/28/85 in Worcester since these are 2 shows where the setlist varies a bit from what was normally performed and there are songs that were either rarely played on that tour or were debuted and played for the first time. Those are 2 of the more interesting shows.

This was really helpful, thank you.

I too would be happy enough with a proper remaster. The 2015 PP Remaster needs to go away. And even the regular album on Spotify is a hodge-podge of tracks from different sources. Y'all have a listen to the transition between IWD4U & BIAS and see what I mean!

Dez Dickerson & The Modernaires, to be precise.

It's enough with 'Purple Rain'.

THEY JUST PUT OUT A DELUXE TWO DELUXES AGO.

That can't hold over the PR pop stans for ten minutes?!

Like surely '1999' has another capricious and arbitrary anniversary date numeral coming up, why, let's put out another '1999' SDE while we're at it!

And what about 'D&P'. His second-biggest seller, if you weren't aware. So I mean it goes without saying this is a Top-Shelf Money-Making artistic hallmark of a triumph among triumphs we're talking here. You wonder where's "I Wonder"? D&P SDE 2, baby, let's book it, the Estate needs to give the people what they want already. You see how hype everyone is.

Then we can stand back and bask in our fantastic multi-editions of his three greatest albums in all of Prince.

The Purple Rain Deluxe was rushed out, poorly mastered and severely lacking in scope. Doing another one isn't just a cash grab, they haven't done that era justice yet. Prince was at his peak in the mid-80s, so the Parade material and the rest of the Purple Rain stuff is still what I'm most interested in. No complaints from me if they get this right

i actually like the last release with the vault tracks.

its unfancy, not a lavish package, but i just wanted those songs, so it was amazing to have roadhhouse garden, we can funk in good quality etc.

and the booklet had some cool stuff from W&L.

that was good enough.

BUT id welcome a new SDE if it had more vault material (let me hear when doves scream in good quality! razz ), a live set (a good one that is not syracuse, and maybe diff from the regular setlist, maybe the first ave set, and a show from later in the tour), and some other bonus material. but i dont need the film on blu ray or anything like that. just stick to the music and tour please. if they do something good in remastering the album, that might be cool - i always thought the title track didnt sound totally right on record for some reason.

Not when the remaster is brickwalled, 1/10th of the Vault material from that era is missing, and the other ones were released not in 1st gen transfers but cassette tapes at best smile

But omg they already did a deluxe edition in 2017, that means revisiting Prince's most popular album with proper Vault material and a decent remastering over a half a decade later is immoral and wrong wink
