D&P Atmos/Hi-Res Blu-ray Audio

Starting a separate thread for this as it's not part of the SDE, but there is a Blu-ray audio disc available for pre-order featuring an Atmos mix and hi-res stereo.

https://www.thesdeshop.co...-atmos-mix

Instant pre-order for me.

Nope. This is a Blu-Ray audio disc - no video. Can only be bought in this separate stand-alone edition from the site in question (who specialise in these hi-res audio editions).

Edit: As others have said, the owner of SDE has confirmed that this isn't exclusive to his site. But it's not being promoted elsewhere right now.

All of my hang-ups have gone. How I wish you felt the same.

It's not the same. The SDE blu-ray is the Glam Slam '91 show + the video collection. This blu-ray is audio only and features the Atmos mix of the album + a hi-res stereo version.

Thanks for posting this

To be clear, it does not appear that he has the exclusive rights to this Dolby Atmos mix.

It is a standalone release. And I cannot find any other retailer who is offering it yet.

His website is phenomenal and I’m happy to support it. But I do believe it will be available elsewhere in limited quantities.

Good point! I did not notice that it wasn't tagged as an SDE exclusive (which they do usually notate), as I was too busy hitting the "BUY NOW" button, but yeah, it appears that it might be available thru other channels as well. If it shows up in the US, I may cancel my SDE order to save on shipping.

This. I'd love to order this, but it seems silly to pay international shipping if it'll be offered in the US.

It's NOT exclusive to SDE but the only other link I could find for it is on JPC, so still international shipping for US buyers. I'm just gonna keep my SDE order and not worry about the 5-6 dollars I might save on shipping.

I'm probably more excited about the D&P Atmos/HR Blu-Ray than I am about the box set! If you have a decent 5.1 or Atmos set up at home this is going to be insanely good! I have a 7.1.4 Atmos set up that is excellent for this type of offering, I'm beyond hyped.

SDE is a great place to find out about hi rez audio releases and sales. I have been buying from them for years and its been a great experience everytime.

someone please educate me...I am very much into 2 channel stereo sound. I have spent loads and loads on it. I'm looking SUPER forward to the D&P Remaster. Now I'm hearing of this stand alone blue ray audio whicih will have 2 tracks...an ATMOS mix and a stereo mix. So, how is the latter diff from the remastered audio cd of the D&P album (Disc 1).

ALso, I do have some good equipment for surround sound but, it's not on level with my 2 channel set up. How is an ATMOS mix supposed to compete? Or, is it a totally diff experience?

What would they use the rear and and centre channels for in a ATMOS surround mix of a music album?????

What I wouldn't give for a Steven Wilson Atmos mix of a Prince record...but I doubt he did this one. He's a big Prince fan but D&P probably isn't his favorite album and he tends to only work on albums he likes.

It's a Blu-ray disc, so you need a Blu-ray player.

Yeah that would be ideal. His work on the Tears For Fears Albums has been stunning ("The Hurting" in particular was spectacular). I really would lose my mind if he ever did a classic Parliament Funkadelic record!

For the Atmos fans (I don't know anything about the Atmos market, so please forgive my ignorant question): what are the probabilities that this is a proper Atmos mix (a remix, done from the multitracks) as opposed to an Atmos mix automatically generated from the stereo mix (which wouldn't make a lot of sense to me, but you never know - people generate "HD" video from "SD" content all the time and upsample audio as well)?

It's a Blu-ray disc, so you need a Blu-ray player.

And if you have Sonos connected to your Apple TV, not all Sonos products support Atmos (my old Playbar soundbar doesn't, but the newer Sonos soundbars do; similarly my old Sonos 3 surrounds won't support Atmos but the new Era 300 which replaced the Sonos 3 does)

This Sonos page lists their products that support it:

If I understand this Atmos stuff, does this mean you can listen to and isolate the tracks on the mix. So for example, if you wanted to listen just to Sonny T playing the bass guitar or even mute Tony M’s rapping, you can do that?

listening or being able to listen to isolated channels so to hear just the bass or guitar or drums...sounds cool and educational but is that how music was meant to be heard? Anyway, i'm buying it and will listen when i get it.

NO, that's not correct. Album Atmos mixes are just surround sound mixes, just like you would have in a movie, but audio only. How the music/instruments/voices are channeled is completely up to the sound engineer who mixed the record. Some people make "conservative mixes", some make wild mixes with sounds panning from speaker to speaker, swirling over head, etc.

If this is an upmix and not a proper, discreetly mixed Atmos mix I will be extremely pissed. There have been known fake Atmos mixes uploaded to some streaming services, and this caused enough backlash to the point where Apple now expressly forbids the practice. So although there is a chance it's a fake Atmos mix I highly doubt it.

Is the Blu Ray Atmos Audio disc up for pre order Region protected? If so, might have to hold off on this until there's a US link.

You can't isolate channels normally. You could do it with a computer Blu-ray player, but even then it wouldn't necessarily be just bass or just guitar. You could isolate the front channel, or left and right channels, or rear channels, or height/ceiling channels, etc. What's on those channels is whatever the mixing engineer put in those channels.
