Is the Blu Ray Atmos Audio disc up for pre order Region protected? If so, might have to hold off on this until there's a US link.

None of the Blu-Ray audio discs I have are region coded.

If I understand this Atmos stuff, does this mean you can listen to and isolate the tracks on the mix. So for example, if you wanted to listen just to Sonny T playing the bass guitar or even mute Tony M’s rapping, you can do that?

NO, that's not correct. Album Atmos mixes are just surround sound mixes, just like you would have in a movie, but audio only. How the music/instruments/voices are channeled is completely up to the sound engineer who mixed the record. Some people make "conservative mixes", some make wild mixes with sounds panning from speaker to speaker, swirling over head, etc.

Thanks for this and all your other, really helpful replies 👍

How is an ATMOS mix supposed to compete? Or, is it a totally diff experience?

.

Google exists.

.

What would they use the rear and and centre channels for in a ATMOS surround mix of a music album?????

.

Lemme give you a clue: it was remixed for Atmos.

What I wouldn't give for a Steven Wilson Atmos mix of a Prince record...but I doubt he did this one. He's a big Prince fan but D&P probably isn't his favorite album and he tends to only work on albums he likes.

Note that Chris James also says he worked on vault tracks. So expect some of those outtakes on the set to be not from 1990/1991/1992 when it comes to the mix, but a "modern" mix (probably/hopefully based on a cassette copy of a mix).

For the Atmos fans (I don't know anything about the Atmos market, so please forgive my ignorant question): what are the probabilities that this is a proper Atmos mix (a remix, done from the multitracks) as opposed to an Atmos mix automatically generated from the stereo mix (which wouldn't make a lot of sense to me, but you never know - people generate "HD" video from "SD" content all the time and upsample audio as well)?

Ok, so very likely remixed by Chris James, even though he doesn't explicitely mention the Atmos release ("more to come"?). Thanks. And very good news.

.

I'm not yet in the Atmos bandwagon, but I've always been kind of excited by surround/5.1 releases of my favorite artists (stuff like the Quadraphonic LP release of "Bitches Brew" in 1971, SACDs, etc.).

I have a sonos 15.7 version Sonos OS S2.

Dont think that supports Dolby atmos, can't seem to find a definitive explanation.

It depends on whether you have an atmos-capable soundbar (Arc, for example) or not. Though soundbars can only imitate a real Atmos-setup, of course, but at least they can play it.

I have not heard any music newly remixed for surround / atmos set-ups. But I think it adds a whole new artistic layer to the music. Wonder how many artists are fully involved themselves in this "remix" experience vs. just a sound engineer doing his/her best take.

Obviously with Prince, we know he is not around, but for other artists I believe this must be really cool

Artists are very rarely involved in this. And in my opinion Atmos is just a fad, similarly to quadrophonia in the '70s or 3D TV more recently. Gimmicks. Cool to check them out, but it diverts my attention from the music so I don't like it.
And don't forget that soundbars can only imitate the sound of a real surround speaker setup (with ceiling speakers and side speakers etc etc) – and even that imitation only works when it's installed properly in a suitable rooom.

Amen. His remix work for Yes and XTC and Ultravox and especially Tears For Fears has all been spectacular.

.

I've got a wish list of bands and albums I wish Wilson would tackle. And Prince is right there at the top.

completely agree with this. Unless the originally work was created specifically for the format, it's most definitely a gimmick.
