It’s a bit unremarkable but kind of fun. Protégé quality material, imo. I could see Elisa or even Rosie giving it a go. His take on a non-Prince concept is very Prince, and kind of amusing. As a preview single, it seems like an odd choice, as it’s not among his best, nor very memorable. But the choice to put it in the singles box, next to a commercial run of classic singles that was only rivaled by Purple Rain is quite a mystifying choice. Why not Willing And Able, or another song that deserves to stand next to the others? That said, I’m still excited by this release, and I’ll definitely support it. I’m just confused by the spotlight being shone on Alice.

You'd think there's stronger tracks on there but all subjective I suppose

I like it. The falsetto reminds me a bit of Pheromone, especially in the second part, while the arrangement without real instruments but only keyboards, electronic drums and cheap voices reminds me of the version of Possessed that was in Purple Rain's DE Vault. I foolishly heard Sheila E.'s version before this one and - nothing - the first verses really reminds me of Sheila E. It's a piece that reminds me of many others, but it's decent even if imho it's more an idea than a finished job. As always beautiful at the beginning Prince who makes little voices to remember where to put a musical theme with other instruments, which he won't put on and remains done with his voice. This one was quite the surprise. I can only imagine the excitement when the person going through the tapes came across this gem. I love the D&P album but the new jack swing stuff he did for others isn't my thing. But now that I've scoured the interwebs and listened to Prince's versions I'm in.

You can definitely tell it’s a demo. Whenever Prince mimics a saxophone, it meant that he needed Eric to record it later :-) Check the two versions of Cocoa Boys. With and without Prince mimicking the sax.

"The first digital single taken from the DIAMONDS AND PEARLS Super Deluxe Edition is "Alice Through The Looking Glass". Recorded on May 28, 1991, at Larrabee Sound Studios, Studio A, Los Angeles, California, Prince used synth drums, percussion, a Proteus bass, guitar, and a series of loops to create the song." . Uh, where is the guitar? And is it a real bass? I thought if was a synth bass...

So nothing 4 years before and 4 years after Dangerous in 91. Even if we take the middle years (89-93), it's Prince's 4 albums. Back to topic, Alice has grown on me. I love it.

I first heard Sheila sing it back in 1991 on her Sex Cymbal tour in San Jose. I wonder if it was slated for that abandoned Paisley album?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That abandoned Paisley Park album was in 1989. You'd have known that if you'd checked the Track Lists For Unreleased Albums And Singles chapter on The Chronological Prince ...ings Index blog. But even though Sheila was laughing at her past Prince Collaborations on her non-Paisley 1991 Sex Cymbal album, she was still seeing him according to Robin Power, so she might have added her vocals on Alice back then, I suppose. But when she performed the song at the 2002 Celebration, she had been touring with him as seen in Live at the Aladdin, so maybe she added her vocals to one of his songs (Alice) then? And then she also performed it at the Family Jamm in 2003. Now she was with Prince again and he gave her that song like he gave her Leader of the Band when they were hanging out again in 2010?
