I Wonder and Player. Strangely omitted

I’ve just listened to “I Wonder” and looked at some of the comments about it online. Some people have noted it sounds has musical similarities to the released “Elephants & Flowers” and there is no definite date it was recorded (e.g. Prince Vaults just says 1990 or 1991). Perhaps it was recorded early 1990 and was felt to fit more into the Graffiti Bridge era. Also for “Player” Prince Vault just mentions ‘at some point in 1991’, so if it falls after their arbitrary cut off date (say on or later than 1st October 1991), then it would be considered for the “Love Symbol” SDE (if one ever sees the light of day). Of course Prince Vault and us all could be wrong and these two tracks may be aren’t even from the D&P/Love Symbol era, time will tell?

.

I'm sad for I Hear Your Voice. It was recorded in April '91, Gett Off is May '91...

Yeah, it is an odd that’s not on, when it was recorded the same day as ‘The Voice’, which is on the set!

Same with Trouble & I Want U recorded the same day but only Trouble is included on the set while the excellent I Want U has been left out sad

Just because something was initially recorded on a particular date doesn't preclude it from being worked on later or curated as part of another abandoned project somewhere along the way.

For tracks like this, I suspect they will see a release in another context.

I'm waiting for someone to complain that the estate is releasing this the same day as Taylor Swift is releasing 1989 (Taylor's version) already getting tons of pre sales on her site for various vinyl versions, I'm waiting for Prince fans to complain that they should have waited lol now this D&p SDE is going to get lost. Please people if you are hoping for commercial success lol Olivia Rodrigo in September 8th and then Swift on October 27th these two are going to go through the roof, people that are going to buy prince will buy it, he's gaining new fans with a D&P reissue lol

I always like how Prince invented Swift's idea of re-recording the catalogue to reclaim ownership but in stark contrast Prince fans believed it was the world's worst idea and shamed him into backtracking/shutting the plan down. Meanwhile the Swifties are like "Thank you ma'am! May we have another?!"

Prince invented the idea of rerecording? LOL
That idea has been around and often used throughout the history of sound recording. Many artists rerecorded (at least) their hits whenever they got a better deal than they had before.

i thnk Frank Zappa already had this idea in the 70s or 80s when he was fighting WB.

Found it. Well, quite strange. It has less energy than the 'beginnings' version. It seems a remix more than an alternate version. But it is interesting anyway.

Little Richard rerecorded his Specialty sides for VeeJay in the '60s, just as countless blues and jazz artists did rerecordings way before him. (Just see how many versions of John Lee Hooker hits are out there, many even under fake names he used). As I said, it's an idea as old as sound recording itself.

What an irrelvant remarkt tbh;

"...waste money on vinyl..."

I think if they treated vinyl like in the 90s when they would leave off material to make it fit or put extra material on the CD version because it has more space that it would be better. we could have full CD's than instead of what we now getting with 60 minutes on empty unused space on the CD set that they could have filled with all the previously released material and some extra outtakes.

I also don't understand why they put two or three songs on one side of a vinyl in this SDE.

The vinyl- and pressing qualities these days are far better than way back when songs had to be pressed on maxi singles to have a better sound quality for DJ's. All vinyls these days are 180gr with deeper grooves, right?

This 12 LP's could indeed be reduced. Some (extra) LP('s) could be used for more extra material too. Same as on CD's.

But a package of 12 LP's at more or less 25 EURO per LP, is of course a cash-in thing.

Something like +300 EURO for the whole package, including the book (that doesn't cost all that much to print, just like the box itself or the poster).

Like i said, it's a cash thing probably.

-

Why don't they release the Edits only as a RSD release for the completists only?

Or a new RSD Greatest Hits package that often is filled with only Edit versions...?

A friend of mine send me a vocal message via Messenger while he was listening the song, so I hear it in low fi. It is - at the beginning - like a raw remix (the initial verses are repeated twice), meager instrumentation, more focus on chorus, less energetic than the "beginning" version and less chaotic that the official released one. Funny, at the end, Prince made the female voice tallking with himself "male" where in the released one he recorded a real female voce. I don't know if this version is better that the others, but it is quite different.

It’s pretty boring. Seems like something that would be better offered as a vault download rather than taking up space on a Super Deluxe Edition of a classic album. At least the version on Beginnings has a bit of life to it with the razor sharp guitar, bass, and sample interplay.

Well, it is not a great track, but I don't think it is worse than Delirious (full lenght) or Colleen.

I think Colleen has a nice groove. It makes me want to move a bit as it starts to build. Delirious Ext doesn’t add much and feels a bit pointless, but it’s still a classic. Horny Pony wasn’t exactly a high mark in the canon for me, but this version feels so nondescript. Like if you muted the vocals would you even know it’s Prince?

Seems an odd choice when so many outakes have been left out.

As a reminder : I Wonder, Player, Uh Huh, I Hear Your Voice, Stroke, Waiting 4 Your Love, Gett Off's Cousin, Do You Wanna Rock, I want U, etc...

Did they chose to save them for other projects ? SDEs, Vault Series, etc...?

Yes - a bunch of tapes that were transfered for D&P SDE were also Love Symbol era, such as Dream, Race 92, Love 2 The 9s Demo, 1000 Hugs & Kisses, The Ryde, Blood Is Thicker Than Time, etc...

I’d have loved that joint SDE.
I get they both deserve a SDE of their own but if the Symbol one doesn’t happen we may never get the likes of Race 92 and L2T9’s demo. And that’ll be a killer
.
Don’t understand why early version of The Flow with Rosie and Joyful Sound aren’t on this SDE, considering they were on early configs of the album

The best solution would have been to release 2 separate SDE at the same time. This would have really been a big year.

Now, it may be 10 years or so before we hear the Lovesymbol outakes. Sad but true.

From 2017 until November of this year, there will have been 19 Frank Zappa multi disc box sets. Deluxe editions containing studio sessions, multiple concerts, demos, alternates, etc. Hopefully one day we'll get that lucky. Surely, Prince's vault has way more material than even Zappa's legendary vault! His fans are getting at least 3 box sets a year for the past 6 years or so! Frank Zappa's estate has proven that if you give the fans what they want, they'll spend the money to make the vault a profitable money maker for years to come. There's more than enough material in Prince's vault to satisfy new fans, casual fans, hardcore lifelong fans, completists, etc. Release it!
