Put on your good dress baby,it's Courtin' Time!

"Courtin Time" is a very underated track.Easily one of my favorites off of the emancipation album
I know some songs were made to be longer just to fill in time such as "sleep around" which goes on too long
But courtin Time could've benefited for being a longer track

Upon first impression I got huge Lawrence welk show vibes from this track.
I can picture Prince actually singing this on the Lawrence welk show

All opinions are welcome on this fabulous track "Courtin Time"

Production is like a star wars bar jazz preset
But yes, i love it too
Way better than a lot of emancipation
Should have been the first track. Sets the tone for the album in a way

"Courtin' Time" was one of the very first songs I gravitated toward on the album. Big Band is one of my favorite genres. This song ticked a few boxes.

Prince made an excuse for it when asked, but I see the drum machine as a short-coming in the song. The way we hear a superior version of "Somebody's Somebody" in the live studio mix, "Courtin' Time" deserved a live take on an album that otherwise started his acrylic production era.

All that said, it's still a fun song for me.

"Sleep Around" is a tad long, just sorta bangs along. I took it upon myself, because I can, to edit some of those Emancipation songs down to something more listenable, keeping the energy going and not letting songs get bogged down in lengthy extended sections for the sake of a 60-minute disk. Granted, nothing extensive or harsh, but some things needed some fat trimmed.

If you have a problem with me, text me. If you don't have my number, you don't know me well enough to have a problem with me.

Its just bloated
Both as individual songs and the set as a whole
Total missed opportunity to relaunch himself in 96
If only he edited it better

"Courtin' Time" was initially my favorite song on the album. But as time has gone by, my opinion of it has gone done for the reasons you articulate.

The prob is the song is sincere but the production sounds chintzy
It also sounds airless
But its a cool little song
I put it in the same sort of category as delirious

Speculation but if just seems obvious to me
He wanted to do a 3 disc set with each cd having a exact 1 hour run time

Based on his career it seems more likely every song has a "full" 20 minute version somewhere in Vault Mountain and he decided to edit aiming for 60 minute runtime for once.

His tendency seemed to be to trunicate his jams for the album sequence vs. expand tracks for no reason.

"Sleep Around" is okay!

Either could be expanded in length, really, as they're both nice tunes to dance to, IMO.

The 60 min runtime had a philosophy behind it
But padding it out was because he knew three discs means it counts as three album units sold in America
So he had to justify it by making sure each disc was almost the full cd length
But the story is that he learnt how mjs history sold and wanted in on the action

You think he just compiled songs and they just happened to come out to 60 minutes exactly? C'mon. Some of those have extended endings or mid-sections that are obviously there for that reason. Clever, but kitchy.

I was trying to remember. I think he may have been talking to Kurt Loder... SOMEONE (dang it), and I think he said something about it was just more about the groove and the fun of it, so the drums became secondary. But - I still disagreed with that. It needed live drums.

That's a little disheartening
I guess if you like the "old friends 4 sale" album you would like courtin time
Songs like it's about that walk,Sarah would sound good next to it

Same
But it would've been a lot better had it been trimmed down to about 4 minutes
Like the version he performed on the Oprah show

Emancipation could have easily been one of his best 90s albums if he just edited it.
Still up there, but could have been higher.

I agree it could have been much better, but no way it could have been one of the best. It was full of plastic production and dated beats. 80s Prince drum programming was fresh, original, and futuristic. Emancipation’s drum programming sounded like a pale attempt to emulate generic radio R&B.

I watched an interview with Hans Martin Buff fairly recently. He said he was tasked with editing down some of the songs so that each cd was no longer than 60 minutes.

It's a great album. It's overwhelming in its size. I think even the fans that don't particularly like it would concede that they're able to make a good playlist from it's content.

Didnt edit enough!
I mean how many extended codas do you need on one album?
They are never ending.
