Morris Hayes talking about 5 songs in the Vault from the Purple era hotter than the ones on Purple Rain

In this interview, Morris Hayes mentions one time in which P made him listen to 5 songs from the Purple Rain era that are hotter than the material on that album. Does anybody know anything about these songs? Are they somewhere in the vault? Also, the fact that Prince kept these songs deliberately unreleased to leave them for his future children (apparently as he stated) made me raise the question...is it really true that he didn't leave any will? How is that possible for somebody who obviously was thinking so much ahead in time. Anyway...Are we ever gonna listen to this material?

I'm quite convinced this is erroneous/not really elaborated on by Hayes correctly. A lot of stuff from this era has already been documented, and a lot we've already heard... of course I'd love for that to not be the full picture, but I tend to think it is.

I can picture him playing stuff like Love and Sex, We Can Fuck, etc... but nothing we don't know about... unless I'm wrong!

That being said, the era isn't exhausted by any means and I'm sure there's quite a few things we have no clue about, and it should obviously be expanded upon by a re-do of the 2017 set... and hopefully far bigger than the undercooked SDE's proposed by the previous estate and some others.

I don't know...I wonder which songs we have heard after his passing that one could say that are hotter than the material from the Purple Rain the album. I honestly can't think of any...plus, in the interview Morris Hayes states that he listened to many songs from the vault, but he never found those tracks again. We are taling about 5 track here. What he states in this interview is pretty huge imho.

It's been said by several people that Prince was his own biggest fan. That he couldn't differentiate between a "Cybersingle" level song and a "Joy in Repetition".

Morris confirming adds some weight. I'm not sure why fans are so quick to assume they know what's left in the vault. Everyone thought "Wally" was gone, until it wasn't.

The estate are never going to release a full list of what they have. The air of mystery serves them better than fans demanding this or that gets released next.

I very much agree. If such songs really exist (and I don't really think Morris Hayes would ever lie about them), surely no one is gonna mention them until they feel the time is right to cash in through them. Again, if these song exist then this must be top secret topic at the estate. It's great though that we have such a testimony from somebody so close to him as Morris. It's a great story in itself.

Exactly. I'm totally willing to believe that Morris heard five songs that we know nothing about / that aren't ciruclating. But I doubt they were actually better than songs on Purple Rain. Prince was a terrible judge. If Morris were to find them and share them, my guess is we would be underwhelmed. Maybe one or even two could actually be great, but not all five.

Alternatively Morris might not have had the awareness we do, and heard something like Purple Music or Possessed for the first time while sitting with Prince, and had an experience.

So we would have two terrible judges here...one being Prince himself (right!) and the other one being Morris Hayes, who has been with him for the longest time any other musician has ever been in any Prince's band... eek ok! Also note that...if you listened to the interview...Morris at first didn't believe Prince that those songs could be better than the songs inPurple Rain and yet, after having actually listened to them, he changed his mind. He also states that even though he has been listening to a lot of material from the vault later, he never heard those songs again.

Now I would be curious to know which any song from the vault you know which could be judged as even remotely hotter than anything from Purple Rain...cause Purple Medley and Possessed are certainly not.

If his son survived it's 100% likely he would have created a will right then and left everything to him. Unfortunately it didn't happen that way and it makes sense if he felt he had no one to leave his work to he wouldn't leave it to anyone.

Maybe they're just hoarders, but a lot of fans here get really hyper dismissive that anything worthwhile could be left in The Vault. Like that thread about "we pretty much have everything notable, right?" that was posted like a week before that badass "Life O the Party" take leaked.

Guys,

let's get something straight: Morris Hayes has been Prince's close friend and collaborator for decades, and he's an honest, down to earth guy. He doesn't have an agenda, he's keeping it real every time he's interviewed or he goes live on fb. In fact, for me he is the number 1 guy I would trust in the entire Prince-camp and I love listening to interviews with him.
.
You are free to question anything he says, but I know I won't. I have absolutely no reason I should.
.
I do believe everything he says – and it's not the first time he's talking about this "A-roll" from the PR-era. He clearly explained that he knows a lot of bootlegs yet these were songs he never heard before OR AFTER. So 'Love&Sex' and any other songs we know are definitely not the ones he's talking about here.
.
I'm still amazed how many of you still don't believe that the Vault actually contains a shitload of quality stuff: hundreds of original masters we have never even heard about. We know how fast P was able to work. We know all the true accounts of how driven he often was and that even after working 24 hours straight he casually asked for fresh tape to start working on a second or third song.
.
We've all seen the photos of the main vault – and I even made a rough calculation of just how many tapes it could've held (see the link to my Paisley Park Vault spreadsheet and read the first page) – and we know that main vault was practically full by 1993 when it was shown in a documentary! So just think about all that and try to estimate how much he recorded after 1993 – and how much of that could've been recorded on ProTools, which means they weren't adding tape reels to the vault for quite a while, they must have been just archiving onto hard drives – and we have absolutely no idea how many HDDs were found in Paisley. Surely, many of the HDDs that were held in those big tool boxes we saw on the photos contained recordings of live gigs, but I'm sure there are also plenty that contain studio recordings.
.
So yes, I'm amazed how many of you still doubt that there's a LOT we haven't even heard about, and some even go as far as thinking we already have everything. That is laughable. But then again, if y'all are questioning what Morris Hayes says, who am I to expect you're going to listen to me... smile

Please be civil and respect the NDAs people had to sign – and respect their personal respect towards Prince that means they aren't going to disclose confidential information before it's time to talk about an actual vault release. Morris have already been clear enough in saying the material Prince showed him is something he never heard before and haven't heard since. Just trust what he says without trying to put him under pressure to expose more details. He will speak when it's time to.

I believe Morris Hayes is telling the truth and knows what he's talking about. He sure knows more about the vault and unreleased songs than we do so there's most likely lots of great material we haven't heard yet. Like a few of the songs they played at the Celebration this year.

I don't know. If it was just Prince saying it, I'd have my doubts, but Morris adds credibility.

Even if you're being conservative, and work off the assumption that Prince recorded 1 song per week. 37 years x 52 weeks = 1924. If he was recording 2 songs per week, that number doubles 3848.

For the sake of argument, let's say Prince released 848 songs. Let's say fans are aware of another 2000. That still leaves a more than a career worth of music in the vault.

I don't think it would be surprising if he held back songs for his retirement. I also wouldn't be surprised if he held back songs he felt were too personal. I also think he probably on average, recorded more than 2 songs per week.

I don't think most of us are saying Morris is lying. I completely believe him that he heard five uncirculating songs. And I can even believe they're good. But I'm skeptical that they're better than anything on Purple Rain. Not because I think Morris is a liar or because he's a bad judge of music. But because he's biased. He loved Prince and that might skew some of his opinions.

Morris is trying to promote Prince's legacy and help maintain and grow the legend. I can't imagine Morris, depsite his honesty, every saying, "Prince played me five songs and they were terrible."

How about his sisters? his family? or anybody else he truly loved?

The man was all about his legacy...and he didn't leave no instructions whatsoever on what to do with it? If you think about what level of control freak he was, then iti s not objectively very credible that inalmost 40 years of the kind of career he had, he didn't think to write down anything, you know, just in case something might have gone south. As unlikely as it sounds, I think it is way more probable that whatever will he might have left, it was taken care of by someone who had different plans. Conspiracy? Well...Tens (if not hundreds) of millions is well worth conspiratorial undertakings.

He was about intellectual property.

He wanted to own the rights to his music when he was ALIVE.

He said that "someone would release his vault music".

That alone should tell you everything. He had a bunch of unfinished work in there, if he cared so much about what happened after he passed, he would have only left the really good stuff in the vault for that "someone" to release it.

He seemed to be in the mode of making "amends" with everyone in his last couple of years, but uh, do we have concrete evidence he felt that strongly about his family for a significant duration of his life? You speak as if you got some receipts.

"Anybody else he truly loved," now we're getting into girlfriend or Kirky J territory. He clearly loved Kirky J, was not being facetious. It seems like there's significantly more evidence/liklihood of him loving Kirky J to the level where he'd leave his legacy to him more than his family?

You're trying to intimate these relationships are comparable to leaving something to his son. People may love their siblings and their best friends all but you still might not want to leave everything to them for one reason or another, whereas leaving something to your kid is almost automatic.

Just look at the language with which people articulate being a parent. It gives you a new set priorities that you formerly did not care or worry about. Without a kid, you have significantly different priorities.

The act of not writing a will is still enacting control / being a "control freak" if it was intentionally left omitted. Maybe not the way you would do it, but he always did his own thing.

Isn't the Estate in debt anyway? Did Prince really have that huge of an empire, what were they planning to rake in the big bucks with a Purple Rain re-release every couple years? Barbie Spotify Playlist residuals? Didn't the bulk of his income since the 80s come from touring?
