Prince's Batdance, and other novelty songs you secretly love

https://www.thedailymash....712237513w

For those who don’t know, The Daily Mash is a British spoof/satirical newspaper website parodies current affairs and other news stories. Nice to see a reference in popular culture though. And I do like a bit of Batdance.
There may or may not be something coming!

I don't like Batdance but I also don't really see it as a novelty song.

I started to became an ultrafan since Batdance. Great autosampling masterclass by Prince, great video and a great era.

yes

"Rave unto the joy fantastic" !

A tantalising peek at what the album after Lovesexy may have sounded like, if it wasn't for Batman!

Love this song, and agree that Vicky Vale mix is awesome.

I think I asked this question a while back, but I would be keen to crowd source info about which other tracks are sampled/replayed/referenced throughout batdance (in all its mixes).

I think there is a nerdy infographic to be made! But the data needs some expert gathering

Anyone want to have a crack at breaking down one of the mixes into individual components (stretch goal: with time codes)?

Top of the head list to get us started:

RUTJF
We got the power
Electric chair…

But I’m sure there are loads more, plus perhaps even the sampling of some unreleased stuff.

Anyone in?

I like it. However, I agree - it is not a novelty song, it is a sampler, an overture of the Batman themes (and other work)

Following the anniversary of the Batman album this year, I've been on a MASSIVE Batman kick. I'm listening to most of the album every day, with Vicki Waiting and Batdance probably being my two most played songs. I've rediscovered the Vicki Vale Mix and an unreleased version of Batdance running at 8 minutes long, plus a live version of Vicki Waiting, which are my "go to" versions right now. Still can't believe the best part of Batdance (in my opinion) was left off the final version, the bit starting with Joker saying "oh what a day" and these massive drums coming in. I also love how Rave, We Got The Power and House In Order were sampled through the multiple Batdance versions. And that guitar solo? Definitely one of his best studio solos.

Funny you say that actually, as just last night I was throwing together a tracklist for my own "Ultimate Batman" album I've been thinking of making for me and sending to a Prince friend. I was looking at it thinking "damn, this would make a great SDE" and I would 100% pay for it. I'll post what I've got so far, but before anyone gets up in my grill: I know there are more than likely even MORE Batman era songs, still in the vault and in bootleg circles, but this is how I'd rather listen to the album and expand/collect it together for my friend.

3 The Arms Of Orion

It should include more remixes because this misses two of the best 12" remixes Prince ever made: The Future and Electric Chair.

If you're talking about the remixes from The Future single, fun fact: I've never heard them and don't think I even have them. This was made based on what I have and listen to frequently. But I can try and search them both out, see if I deem them worthy of inclusion and sharing with my friend wink wink

For novelty songs can I add “No more Candy 🍭 4 U” please? Always makes me laugh.

And on the Batman era, I loved the Future & Electric Chair remixes also. Amazing.

Partyman maxi single is cool, as is the Scandalous Sex Suite.

Nice! Though i dont know if the nude tour is needed here. He didnt play nearly enough batman songs on that tour, which is odd as it was a hit record. I guess he thought it was maybe too much batman, not enough prince.

If I remmber correctly The Nude tour was billed as being his greatest hits tour.
I think it was just to wrap up the 80s and start fresh with the whole new style (Diamonds and Pearls)
The Tokyo show above is missig alot, if they release it (if they would it would highly likely be the video) they'll probably release the 'Fullasoul' complete version remastered.

I know the Tokyo show is missing a lot, which makes me sad, but it's probably my favourite Prince show ever. I chose to include it for that reason, and because there's a few Batman songs present. I know it's more of a "greatest hits" and "stripped back" tour, but I'm pretty sure Nude is the only time Prince played so many Batman era songs in one go. I think the only Batman songs that were frequently performed afterwards are Scandalous and Partyman (the song that made me a Prince fan in the first place)

It doesn’t look like Trust or Lemon Crush have been played live, according to Prince Vault, but was a live vocal version of The Arms Of Orion been done by Prince. Until last week ‘arms’ was in my top three least liked Prince tunes but I heard a Sheena Easton live version on YouTube the other week and it has suddenly gone well up in my estimation.

On the topic of Prince novelty records, I’m not sure Batdance is one but it kinda of is. Others that may be considered would be that football anthem, ‘Purple & Gold’, the penguin thing, ‘The Song of The Heart’. Perhaps ‘Hot Summer’ until it was released on Welcome 2 America would have fit too. Any others?

I think Arms Of Orion is a sweet song and don't get why people don't like it. Sure it isn't as good as Adore or Scandalous, but it also isn't Purple And Gold. I also think Song Of The Heart is so sweet and love that he got some awards for it! Never knew Prince performed it, I'll have to try and look for that, and Sheena's version of it too. Thank you for telling me about these 😄😄
