Thanks for the clarification. I suspected that it could be that reference....
You have to remember that "Pop Life" dates to February 1984. Filming was done for the movie, Morris had not shown up during filming which is why Jerome got the "here's two tickets to tomorrow night's show" sequence. According to Alan Leeds, several days of shooting were altered or moved around because Morris didn't show up to set due to his issues with Prince (and cocaine).
The date is important because it was a then-ongoing issue and very fresh in Prince's mind, and his bid'ness, which apparently Morris was too far gone to see that.
The Time were together in some regard in January because "Ice Cream Castes" and "My Drawers" was recorded that month.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Thanks for the clarification. I suspected that it could be that reference, although considering the widespread cocaine abuse by the star system during a good part of the eighties, it was not very clear to me that the comment was directed at anyone in particular, but rather that it was a general criticism pervasiveness of pop life... including Prince himself for a brief part of his life? I know I'm going off topic, but his attitude for example at the infamous James Brown concert offers a couple of clues. Please note that I am not judging, I myself had a time in which I was an active user of cocaine (I am not ashamed to admit it, as well as that it was one of the worst times of my life), so I think it is quite easy to realize of these things...
You probably got it.
It's like how he was dissing ecstacy on record right after The Black Album was pulled after that famous Ingrid Chavez ecstacy story.
Prince was clearly blasted on something during that Grammy party.

"Yah U Know" might count as a diss track as per this Lisa Coleman interview. According to her, it's about a certain Minnesotan.
Maybe the mock Scandinavian accent might give a clue...

Don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but Da Bourgeoise as a diss/dig toward Andy Allo (allegedly). And I guess by default that makes Bambi a diss to lesbians in general lmao
But he had her on songs after that. And isn't that song about lesbians, anyway? Is she a lesbian? I don't know anything about her beyond her work with Prince. I never dug her music. But she was on his last album while alive, so I don't know how much of a diss that sound would be, considering it was released a few years before she ended up on HnR2.
Talking about lesbians doesn't make it a diss, tho. He was displaying his usual (what is now considered toxic) masculinity. "All you need is some dick, baby!" :::cringe:::
