Purple Rain Super Deluxe - what should be on it?

As we all can guess, 2017's Purple Rain Deluxe was likely pieced together before the Estate had a good handle on the contents of the vault. It would explain why they called it 'Deluxe', and not 'Super Deluxe' and some of us also believe the material was not from the masters....some of it didn't sound great. Them tagging the Purple Rain album as 'Paisley Park Remaster' also tells me, they wanted to ensure we were clear, another remaster would come done by realy pros. The vault disc also felt slapped together....and considering how thorough the next two SDEs were and how well the sound was on all of it, I figure we're going to get something massive next year for Purple Rain's 40th Anniversary.

What to you all think will be on it? My hopes...

1. A remaster of the original album by Chris James.

2. A remaster of all the vault tracks they find....include everything that the 2017 Deluxe version had. I MUST get Love and Sex more clear....

3. Release that 1984 Birthday show on audio

4. Release the 1983 1st Ave show...hopefully a video is cleaned up and ready to release. BTW, would like audios of the show too.

5. Vault - what do you all feel they should release?????

For unreleased tracks I’d say songs from after 1999 was officially released to the last songs that were recorded just before the PR album dropped… late ‘82 to mid ‘84. This covers the PR era well and it would leave plenty of songs out of PR SDE to give more meat to a potential ATWIAD SDE am I right? Lol

If there is a list of the 100 songs that were passed to Albert Margnoli to consider, then all of them, plus as rude boy says, anything else in that late ‘82 to mid ‘84 period.

To be honest, discussions like this, although interesting, remind me what a boring period we are at, in terms of anything of note happening in Prince world. We are having to regurgitate topics to stop us falling off a cliff.
There may or may not be something coming!

Obviously, upgrades of the vault tracks we got on PR:D would be fantastic, including a properly edited "Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden". Then there are the vault tracks that weren't released last time around:

  • Wet Dream Cousin
  • Wonderful Ass (Original Mix)
  • Cloreen Bacon Skin
  • My Love Belongs To You
  • Electric Intercourse (Live)
  • I Am Five
  • Wednesday
  • Blue Love
  • Be My Hero
  • The Dawn
  • Traffic Jam
  • All Day, All Night

Beyond that, I'd also like Prince vocal versions of tracks like "G-Spot" and "Chocolate".

Just a few weeks until Celebration when we'll see if the estate actually has anything noteworthy lined up, or if we'll just be kept in the dark even longer

They should release the 83 First Avenue benefit show (audio and video) as a standalon 6 months before Purple Rain SDE release just to hype it up.
The video and audio for the '84 First Avenue biurthday show was released to a few some years ago, having onlky a audio vrsion on the PR SDE would create more whining from fans who want the video.
The 84 birthday show should be standalone release (video and audio) with a download code for the video and audio of the rehearsals for that show because all this stuff is in the hands of a few who won't leak it or release them so the Estae might as well do that.
the aiudio of a early Purple Rain show (or try out show) would be cool or the show where he opened with Controversy or where they played Another Lonely Christmas.
For the Vault it would be cool to release all the longer edits or unedited versions of the album tracks plus all the potential tracks he recorded for inclusion on the album/movie. Purple Rain alone had 3 or 4 different edits or something before it became the track on the album.

If I remember correctly, he was just responsible for the remaster of the original album, and all of the vault disc was compiled posthumously from whatever tapes Warner had access to in their own vaults.

Prince vocal version of "Nasty Girl." It MUST exist somewhere in that vault.

His remaster was poor...I think it was just louder. It deserves the treatment that 1999 and Sign O The Times received...

... all that, plust the additional music made for the movie.

I'd like to have that too, but only with Pirnce's involvement.

Plus all the (studio versions of) songs by the acts used in the movie.

-

Official press release of the album and movie in 1984.

Extra scenes left out of the movie on dvd.

Interviews and screenings of the official release of the movie.

Grammy show.

etc

-

just... make it big. HUGE package !!!

The more I think of it...the more I believe they must re-visit the 3 protege albums from the period. Appollonia 6, Ice Cream Castles, and The Glamarous Life. I'm talking full out remasters of them on par with the quality 1999 and Sign got. I also think it may be a good idea to do a proper 4k remaster of the movie.

Man that would be awesome. I also hoped this for 1999. hoping they would do a huge 'Tripple Threat' boxset, but these are just pipe dreams. I don't believe there is anyone at the Estate who is serious enough or knowledgable enough to do this kind of releases. And they would probably never work with fans.

I am not as negative about the Estate...to me, what they pulled off with the 1999 SDE and Sign SDE is pretty amazing, don't you think? The thoroughness of the vault tracks offered....the quality of the sound.....these two factors alone tell me, they care. The actual packaging was pretty damn good too...

Welcome 2 America's SDE was pretty fantastic too.

I feel they have put a lot of care into these....

I love Prince’s 1983 recording of “G-Spot”.That must be included! It even appears in an early script of the Purple Rain movie.

I honestly don't think these releases deserve the title Super Deluxe edition. Just only Deluxe Edition.
A Super Deluxe Edition would have more known (and unknown) material on it. They don't even have ExtraLoveable and Lust U Always on there or on SOTT they chose to put a shitty remix of Strange Relationship instead of a proper unreleased track from that era. IMO these are just releases with not much care or thought put in them and only bundles up some material from that era. They don't even have proper information on the tracks and sessions on those albums but have some random nobody write some social drivel as part of the package.
I hope the current Estate people will do these over in a proper way.

I like SOTT SDE but I agree, several vault tracks are missing like the longer version of Adore which I really hoped would be on the set. The remix of Strange Relationship was totally unnecessary and waste of space.

Would be a thrill to have the original "Slow Love", "Strange Relationship", "Wednesday" and most of all, the full-length 14-minute instrumental "The Dawn" on an expanded PR deluxe. The last one definitely deserves to see the light of day one day ("the dawn" so to speak).

This might be a little controversial, but I think the TRUE ideal Purple Rain SDE would include material from A6, The Time and The Modernaires in addition to an expansion of the previous expanded release:

  • Remastered Purple Rain album
  • Single Edits & B-sides
  • Vault Tracks 1 (corrected/remastered from Deluxe edition)
  • Vault Tracks 2 (additional disc of era vault tracks, i.e. completed "live" Electric Intercourse w/ overdubs, extended The Beautiful Ones, Modernaire, etc.)
  • Remastered Apollonia 6
  • A6 Single Edits & B-sides + Vault
  • Remastered Ice Cream Castle
  • Ice Cream Castle Single Edits & B-sides + Vault (studio The Bird, My Love Belongs to You, etc.)
  • DVD/Blu-Ray of Purple Rain + Music Videos + Deleted Scenes (if extant) + A6 Mini Movie + 1983 First Avenue concert

I heard that the Electric Intercourse live version from FA 83 was worked on with studio overdubs but was abandonned quick and never finished so I don't think we'll ever get to hear this from the Estate.
