Surely Days Of Wild should make the cut..

.

TGE is my favourite album, tied with Love Symbol, but it'll always be tinged with 'can't believe he left DOW off it.' And to a lesser extent Acknowledge Me.

.

I couldn't get enough of those 2 on my The Beautiful Experience VHS and was gutted they didn't make the album.

I think it's strange that Prince didn't even use Days of wild or Acknowledged Me as a B-side for the Gold single at the time. Instead he picked Rock n' Roll Is Alive which is in my opinion a decent track but not that great compared to the other 2 tracks.

I think he picked Rock'N'Roll Is Alive because it was supposedly a response to Lenny Kravitz' Rock And Roll Is Dead, so he just wanted it out as quickly as possible and the Gold single was that opportunity. But really, it's an Emancipation song. I've included it on my Emancipation playlist. It fits well there. biggrin

to those of you dissing “I Hate U” nuts that song is Prince at his absolute best! He delivers a really amazing vocal in the verses and that courtroom part is so bold and unique.Classic Prince!! This song perfectly csptures the pain of heartbreak. It’s arguably his finest single of the 90s.

.

Not to mention how amazing the NPG was on this one and the furious guitar solo in the end. My only ciriticism is the tons of keyboards there (probably courtesy of Ricky P).

Why does everyone hate Shy so much? I can understand it not being everyone's cup of tea, but there seems to be a concensus that's not merely below average, it's downright terrible. I don't get it.

.

I'm glad he included "Shy", which is much more eclectic and creative than a song like "Days Of Wild".

.

Or one of my lest favorites:"Rippopgodazippa", which is such a lackluster, boring song.

Whatever. The Gold Experience is at the top of my personal list for Prince. Do I wish he added Days of Wild? Of course! But the way it exists is still an exceptional album IMO.

I don't mind Rippopgodazippa. To me it's very similar to Shy, not in sound obviously, but in that it's electic and creative... and that it doesn't really fit with the feel of the rest of the album. Both songs are inoffensive, but not great.

I would've loved to see Calhoun Square, What's My Name, Interactive, Strays, there's a lot more than just DOW/AM/RPGDZ.

I absolutely love TGE, but there are a few things I would change:

.

I wish he'd used the single version of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World". That track was just about perfect.

.

I'm not a fan of "I Hate U". The lyrics tiptoe over the line into cheesy territory. It shouldn't have been the first single.

.

I wish he'd tweaked the lyrics to "Endorphinmachine" so that they weren't such a garbled mouthful ("You there, with the serious-lookin' disposition"). And I wish he'd used the version without the cowbell.

Hmmm....intersting take. I might make your first take but I don't have any real problem with the version on the album.

I hate U is one my favorite songs of that album cheesy lyrics or not.

I like the cowbell on Endorphinmachine...I dunno why, I just do.

I don't mind Eye Hate U and will listen to it, but I agree it's a bit derivative and uninspsired.

On the flip side, I disagree with you on 319. That's my favorite song on the album. Relative to the rest of the songs, I don't think its lyrics are too cornball. He's signing about taking some candid photos of a lady in a hotel room. What's weird about that? Sounds like fun to me.

In contrast, look how cringy the lyrics are in other songs on TGE:

Pussy Control: Its cornball lyrics are self-evident.

Shhh: Prince, a 37-year old man, singing about wanting to bang his girlfriend after high school instead of doing their homework.

TMBGITW: Kind of sappy.

Dolphin: He wants to know if someone would be more recepitive to him if he was a dolphin? Really?!?!? Don't get me wrong, I love this song. But the chorus is pure cornball.

Now: Lame drug references trying to appeal to a certain group to whom Prince would never appeal.

Eye Hate U: Court room scene.

Gold: The line "All that glitters ain't gold" is so fucking trite. In fact, most of the lyrics in this song are trite. He strung together a bunch of empy cliches and called it a song.

P control follows the kind of novelty song formula he started on sexy mf Its just worse on all fronts Truly his worst opener for any album Astonishing it wasnt panned more when it was released But shows that for all his bitching, Warner's still let him release what he wanted. Maybe all the label battles made him think he had a winnee. Its not even good trashy prince as he tries to nake it a morality tale, or a conscious, vaguely pro independebt woman song too. When that doesnt totally work either. Fail.

I undertstand why people cringe at the lyrics of P Control, but I love the music. I think it's catchy as hell. I'd never listen to it with people around, but when I'm alone I can't help but cranking it up and dancing to the groove.

I get that Prince must have wanted TGE to be more positive and bright than Come, but I wish [insert wishlist]. I don't skip it every time. But I also don't skip a lot of other boring songs. I def skip We March every time, fwiw.

Exactly this. I stupidly disliked We March for years solely because I had it in my head it replaced Days Of Wild. It's grown on more recently.

.

I've always liked Shy but if I had to pick the 2 weakest tracks it would be those 2.

I love shy. biggrin But We March never appealed to me. I wonder - if I ever get to hear the original version - If I'll like that better. confused P. Control never really appealed to me either and I prefer the original version of Endorphinemachine to the overproduced version that made the album. mad But it was nice finally seeing the songs I did like released. biggrin But it was an album from The Vault and old news for the fans. If it had been released in 1994, the Gold album would have been huuuuge. I'm sure of it. wink

Ripgodazippa actually sounds great in showgirls

It makes the song come alive

Like god in the purple rain sex scene lol

Eye hate u gives me a showgirls vibe too, in a good way :D

its easily one of his best 90s songs

So, I created this playlist on YouTube for an expanded The Gold Experience, based on my tracklist earlier. And it includes the studio "Days of Wild."

I think it flows okay. Thoughts on the inserts? (And I'm not readding "Shy," so don't ask.) I took out the segues, but there's one on the file for "Days of Wild." I had to keep the one between "Eye Hate U" and "Gold" since there's no real separation on the blending of it.

I relegated some of the funkier stuff back to back like "319," "Acknowledge Me," and "Billy Jack Bitch." It keeps a vibe going, I think. "Dolphin" has such a definite ending, that the sudden intro for "Rock n' Roll" felt like it butted up well.

"Days of Wild" and "Interactive" could go anywhere. But I like how "Interactive" has that final ending, then "Now" just blasts into the mix.

Listen and let me know what you think.

Here's the listing:

P Control

Endorphinmachine

Shhh

We March

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

Dolphin

Rock 'n' Roll Is Alive! (And It Lives In Minneapolis)

Days of Wild

Interactive

Now

319

Acknowledge Me

Billy Jack Bitch

eye Hate U

NPG Operator

Gold

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The title track is my least favorite on it. The music is a bit derivative and contrived. And, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, the lyrics are trite. He strung together a series of empty cliches and called it a song.
