the loudness wars and remastering trend have ruined decades of music ..

For some reason Gold is ridiculously loud. If I turn the volume past 2 the preamp is saturated and distorted

it might be the loudest CD I own. Certainly from the 90s. I used to have a mix CD with Shhhh on it. When that song came on, it would wake up the neighbours.

The first time I listened to Shhhh I actually jumped . I was on the bus heading into work listening to a bit of Prince on my morning commute. That song comes on and I got such a fright. I might have even let out a "fucking hell" because the guy sitting opposite me started laughing at me. I think the song might be called "Shhhh" because that's the first thing you think of when it starts.

I think I might have damaged my son in the '90s because I played this CD so much I almost wore it out. Is that why he felt he had to try and master so many awesome Prince guitar solos years later when he started teaching himself guitar at the age of 18?!! Or was it taking him to so many Prince concerts later that he was "Princematitized"? "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

revisting this, all i can think is that the 90s trend for making albums 60-70 mins was a bad one, and gold would have benefitted from being 45 mins. if it was shorter, it would be much tighter. but tbh, all the 90s albums would be sronger if shorter. if they were, people might have a diff view of princes 90s music.

I kind of disagree although I know I'm probably in the minority in thinking that. I would prefer it to have been longer. More songs = more choices.

more choices, sure, but then its just musical data dumping, rather than album making, like what a lot of artists do now on spotify to make their album register as having more plays (eg drake). better IMO to release a tight album, then just release loose songs separately. much easier to do that today with streaming.

For sure. I don't disagree with you on that point at all. Not coming from an "album background" though, I don't put much stock in the concept of "albums" in general. I'd much rather a collection of 20-30 songs than a tight, 10-12 track album. Like I said though, I know I'm definitely in the minority on that.

would you have thought the same pre-spotify? (idk how old you are so maybe you didnt buy albums pre-internet era).
they say (who knows how true it is) that women are less album oriented than men actually.
but in fairness, most albums arent all great albums, theyre just collections of songs. most prince albums arent really that cohesive, theyre just good collections of songs. often, or mostly actually, cos its prince, they dont really all fit together that well.
the industry made the album the main format as they could make more money from it, but most albums would be better off taken on a song by song basis, rather than trying to judge it as a whole. its why greatest hits compilations are so good

I tend to agree that an album of up to 10 songs, about 45 mins is usually about right for a good listening experience. Longer than that, it gets a bit bogged down, like the 3 CDs of 60 minutes for ‘Emancipation’. I tried to listen to that in one go and was disappointed, possibly because of not really taking anything in - it was all too much. Crystal Ball wasn’t so bad, as it was essentially a compilation album, so it felt ok to dip in and dip out. The Gold Experience did seem long but saying that, it would have been enhanced by Days Of Wild and Interactive being on it - perhaps it should have been a double album, which worked with Sign O’ The Times. There may or may not be something coming!

I'm 31 but even before Spotify it would be rare for me to actually buy a CD. I used to listen to a few of my dad's albums though. But more often than not I'd just put together a few playlists on my iPod and listen to a random assortment of crap pop songs.

The Gold Experience might have been the last Prince album that seemed to be "all-consuming" for me at the time. The last of the 1978-1995 run of genius IMO.

relistening to this today, i cant help thinking its got a lot of sleazy trash and plain dumb (eg now) elements to it, along with prince trying to be edgy. i really think a lot of it is like prince writing after watching showgirls lol. e.g. pussy control, eye hate u, endorphin machine, even shhh, a lot of corny sleazy stuff on here. if it had ripgodazippa, thatd take it over the edge lol.

I mean its like hes channelling that vibe
Who knows when he saw a script or concept or rough cut of the film He loved that kind of film though I think i prefer the come album though Tge has a slightly over exuberant vibe at times And the sound of the npg, while much more live than the earlier 90s albums, it just isn't that distinctive really They sounded better when stripped back like on the undertaker Tge has a lot of bells and whistles Say what you want about shy but at least the song is allowed to breathe more [Edited 4/27/23 9:10am]
