Why did Prince perform the Superbowl so late in his career ? He was practically 50 years old when he performed it, 23 years after Purple Rain.
I wonder why it took so long for him to be invited ?
Were the organizers worried that he might pull some crazy stunt like the 95 VMA's ? [Edited 2/14/23 14:54pm] |

He was out of favour in the 90s right? So I'd guess that ruled him out of doing it during that decade. It was only really after Musicology came out that he was back in the public eye (in a positive way). So that's probably why? |

He was kind of back in the public eye with Rave even though it flopped. |

Ah, I see. I was under the impression that he wasn't considered a big draw during that decade. Outside of Most Beautiful Girl In The World, of course. I personally like a lot of his 90s music but I'm not old enough to remember it as it was released. But I only ever read about his 80s hits. I never really hear much about the 90s. |

Cream, Diamonds and Pearl, The Most Beautiful Girl, Get off were all hits at least in the early 90's. He lost his commercial appeal by the mid-90's with the WB situation.
He tried to make a come back with the Rave album but it didn't work out. [Edited 2/14/23 16:00pm] |

I don't believe halftimes of the Super Bowls were big events until after Michael Jackson's halftime show, I think '93 Super Bowl. I may be wrong but that's how I remember it.
I also rememebr the halftime show having some interesting pairings of acts too.

He did not have a multiple platinum album every year in the 90s but as a person 15 years into a music career, he did pretty decent. I would say it was much more quiet for Prince from 2000 to 2004 and then again from 2010-2014. |

What does Purple Rain have to do with it? Nothing.
Who says he wasn't invited before 2007?
Crazy stunt? He didn't perform at the MTV VMAs in 1995. Or did you hear he did?

Same here, MJ's performance is what made the halftime spectacle what they ar now.

MTV EMA's in '95 where he did Peach, but that wasn't a crazy stunt, just a performance so I have no idea what she is on about.

In addition to what others have said: the NFL seemed to go exclusively for "safe" halftime performers in the years right after Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, calling on Paul McCartney and Rolling Stones to perform. They probably wanted to change things up after those two halftime shows and bring someone in who was a little more daring, but not enough to cause any issues. By that time, Prince had settled into a slightly classier and more toned down image and wasn't pushing the envelope like he did in the 80s and 90s, so he was probably a perfect fit for what they wanted at that time - familiar and exciting, but not scandalous. |

And yours seem like performance art in how to be obnoxious.
That's all you seem to do, instead of answering the questions being asked, you engage in failed sarcastic attempts.

Cream, Diamonds and Pearls, Gett Off, Sexy MF, 7, TMBGITW, Letitgo, I Hate U were all successful singles before the contract ended. In 1996, Emancipation was a huge event and he had his Oprah interview which was a big deal back then. He was pretty low key in 97 and then he had a big media push for NPS and then another for Rave. Most of his bigget hits in the '90s were at the very start of the decade, in 1991 or 1992 (Cream, D&P, Gett Off, 7). The only other *big* hit he had was TMBGITW, which was mid-decade, but that was kind of a one off.
None of the other stuff you listed (songs from Come and Emancipation) were not big hits. They were releeased and promoted, but the majority of the record buying public didn't care. Kids certainly weren't listening to those discs.
Back then, the people planning the Super Bowl halftime tended to lump musicians into two categories: established legend and current hip pop stars. Ideally they'd get one from each category at a show, so that they're have the best of both words (e.g. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake). By 2007, Prince had graduated into the established legend category, so that's why he was targeted. But he wasn't about to share the stage with anyone, so that year they just went with a lengend and skipped the younger act.

that was 1991, the pants had flesh color fabric between the yellow so it only looked like he was shwing his ass.

Are you sure you have that right? 1993: MJ 1994; Clint Black 1995; Patti LaBelle 1996; Diana Ross 1997: The Blues Brothers 1998; Boyz 2 Men, Smokey Robinson 1999: Gloria Estefan So, no, I'm afraid it has nothing to do with his chart performance. |

These "hits" are known by no one except the hardcore Prince nerds here, aside from maybe D&P.
He plays them at any Superbowl and it would be literal crickets. There's a reason none of these "hits" came within 175 ft. of the actual Superbowl he performed at.
It's like when org'ers say "Mountains" was their favorite hit. You could pull that shit up on Spotify and accost 100 randos in Times Square and 0.0 of them would recognize that "hit" either.

In fact, this is probably one of many names you've used in the past because your posts are exactly like previous users that "heard" this or "heard about" that. Your profile says you're obsessed as a fan, but you don't seem to know a goddamn thing.
