Do you think Prince ever saw AMADEUS?

It was such a powerful movie (and play).

The brash, young musical genius with all the arrogance of knowing he was the best in the world.

Plus all the ruffle-ly Edwardian suits and towering powdered hairdos.

Do you think it had any impact on Prince right around he was putting together PURPLE RAIN??

It was released in September 1984, so I’d say no impact on Purple Rain.

Edit: This Housequake feature is worth a read for the clothing inspiration, particularly quotes from Marie France his costume designer,

Why do you troll so hard? You can't look something up, about when two movies came out, instead making some inane comment that you know damn well makes absolutely no sense.

Do you think Prince ever farted like AMADEUS?

I've never heard that. I know there was a lot of comparisons made after the movie came out. Maybe he wasn't thrilled with that.

Ehhhh, I'd have to disagree. And it's mostly semantics, BUT It's more of a period piece. It's a biography in nature, but "biopic" typically dictates a more specific approach to the film. Like the films about Whitney, MJ, Toni Braxton, TLC.. those are biopics.

But films like The Iron Lady, Julie and Julia, 12 Years a Slave, or even King Richard are just biographical in nature.

Amadeus is a period, biography piece at most. Certainly embellished more than more proper biopics.

Again, mostly semantics.

Got a vague recollection of a band member or engineer describing Prince reacting to a scene in the movie, but I can't find it right now, so who knows.

FWIW, Toure has this mention of it in his I Would Die 4 U book:

"A former girlfriend said he also loved Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and Mozart. 'He thinks he could’ve been him in a past life. He draws a lot of parallels between himself and Mozart.' She told me that, at one point, Amadeus was Prince’s favorite movie."

yeah, this was posted once upon a time. He's clearing ripping off Amadeus with his puffy shirts. That or he had a Delorean and was paying homage to the Seinfeld episode that would come out a decade later.

He would've needed the Delorean anyway to be inspired by a movie that also didn't come out before Purple Rain.

I don't think she is. when it was released there were reviews that said it was mostly a true story but the most of the rivalry between Mozart and Salieri was fictionaized. if its biopic then it could aslo be seen as biopic on Salieri.

I dunno how to explain it to people who are more interested in their own interpretation than what the film actually is categorized as. I'm aware it's a fictionalized biography. Yet much like other dramatized biographical films, it is based on a true story.

Feel free to peruse Google and see what other outlets say about the film. Dramatized biopic with fictionalized aspects is pretty much the unanimous description. You don't have to take my word for it.

Just like the movies about Queen and plenty others, it is not 100% factual. Not a shock. Nor is it a documentary. Still a biopic.

Hollywood Prince was a bonafide tinsel town bigshot in this era, not to mention The official Warn-a-Brotha®Chosen One. Surely with his peak industry connects he was getting prime hookup to all the interstudio rough cuts, spec scripts, dailies, art direction, costume design etc.

When was it shot vs. when was it premiered etc. Never checked out Amadeus other than clips/stills, but Purple Rain clearly took maybe 5 hours to shoot, 6 tops. Amadeus looked like a much more belabored production than Prince's glorified prime time TV movie of the week.

Happens in the industry all the time. Antz/A Bug's Life, etc.

At least some of Mozart was filmed in July 1983 in Prague. At the start of the ‘Making of Mozart’ documentary, there is a close up of a shooting log for filming in the Tyl Theatre, which is dated “4/7/83 Monday”. Later in the doc, they talk about shooting starting in the January and waiting for real snow for scenes. So it looks like shooting took place from January 1983 to at least July of that year. Purple Rain didn’t shoot until November 1983.

I always felt like the fashion during PR wasn't all that inspired actually. Not that different from Sgt Pepper's, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Adam Ant, and other new romantics before. Now Sheila's Romance 1600 attire and art direction was a definite nod/play on Amadeus. I think she even said as much in some interview.
