The Prince performance is great. Definitely the best I've seen. By a long way. I've been listening to a lot of Michael Jackson over the last month or so and I checked out his Superbowl performance and I honestly don't see why it's held in such high esteem. I don't want to turn this into a Prince Vs Michael thing but for me, a good live performance is only good when it's actually live. Lip syncing doesn't count.

Do you mean "Prince's SuperBONE"?

The reason MJs halftime show is well regarded is because before that, the halftime entertainment was always a marching band, etc.

He has an arrow at the end of his superbown...he shouldve seen Dr.Fink about that...somebody couldve been seriously injured...

I'm not saying MJs was bad just because it wasn't as good as Prince's. I wasn't really comparing the two at all. Like I said, it's not about Prince vs MJ. I was just pointing out that a good live performance, by ANY artist, can only be good when it's actually live. That is why I would disqualify Michael Jackson from the running for best live performance at the Superbowl. I would disqualify Justin Timberlake too because his performance was fucking shocking. And the only other Superbowl performance I have seen is Prince's. Therefore he wins by default, seeing as he's the only one who did a good, live performance.

Of all the other shows on the list you instantly go to the musician least like Prince?

Who cares. It's tired. We get it. Prince fans love Prince. MJ fans love MJ.

I go to the ones I've seen. I haven't seen the rest so I can't comment on those.

Besides, I'm as much of a MJ fan as I am a Prince fan so I'm not sure what your point is there.

80s fans have PTSD from the 22,000 MJ vs. Prince debates they've endured over four decades+ of fandom. Some of them melt down at the prospect of the 22,001th.

Post-80s/90s fans are thirstin' for them, though. Here in the US anyway the youf weren't really talking about either of them until they both transitioned, now decades later the debate is more ubiquitous than ever... no biggie.

Anyway Prince's SuperBowl was meh. That blatantly out-of-tune guitar during "Purple Rain" should disqualify it from consideration as "best". He knew it, too, hence that news story about him freaking out in the limo about how it sucked before the organizer or whoever came out and told him everyone loved it. People are more visual, so they remember/hype/harp on the fact that it was "Purple Rain" In The Rain more than it was a botched live take and one of the worst renditions. This shoulda ended the Jimi comparison's, too, Hendrix woulda successfully bent them notes back.

MJ's is marred as well by the lipsync bowl. Meh as well. Why must this always be the battle of the superstans unwilling to objectively assess their cult heroes? Is the gr8test film : Purple Rain or Captain E.O.?

Bruno Mars
was the best. Not a "fan" or really super familiar, but his set had the best of both aesthetics pulled off without caveats.

Bud, you're making the wrong argument. It has nothing to do with me having PTSD.

It's just the same tired stuff inspired by the same tired stuff. The comparison, especially cherry picked out of a huge list that includes other contemporaries, is unnatural and wack. It would be more apt to compare Prince and Springsteen. These are both singer/guitarist frontmen. MJ is strictly a song and dance man. They're built different.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. You're 100% correct in that they were two very different artists. I wasn't even comparing one to the other. The only reason I mentioned both is because, along with Justin Timberlake's performance, they are the only Super Bowl shows I've seen. I can't comment on Bruce Springsteen or anyone else because I have never seen them. So there was no need for you to react the way you did.
