Unfortunately this is not a rumour...Charles F. Spicer one of the co leader of the new Management of the Estate confirmed this on tweeter few hours ago!!

Sharon & company just can't let the fans have anything of value for Prince.

But let's sell a $120 pair of pj's and some house shoes. mad

You are spot on. It's why we haven't had any music in over a year. Throw in Londell on that bullshit, too.

I totally agree.I don't wanna see a tabloid-ish type documentary that spends too much time focusing on Prince's alleged drug use.

We don't know for sure it was going to focus on drug use. It was supposed to be 8 parts, covering different aspects of his life and career.

According to some associates who were interviewed and some that refused to cooperate because of this I would say it's pretty clear there would be a big focus on it.

Yeah this is what I'm not understanding.

He is not confirming anything. I'm more curious about the guy who claims people from the estate are cockblocking the project vs Spicer.

Also my understanding.

I called this shit like 3 years ago. It genuinely read like a pipe dream everytime the "fams" would wax on and on and on about it.

It would've sucked anyway. 9-part Purple Rain documentary. Prince in the puffy Mozart shirt for the press package yet again. Pass.

It would have probably featured 90% Wendy/Lisa/Susannah/Sheila claiming they created everything and the org would have melted. ?uestlove's Schhtteven Schhppeilberg flow spazzing over every other segment like the definitive authority. Gross.

People wanting this mythical Prince documentary, might just have to settle for the "Once Upon A Time In Minneapolis" series on youtube...which is surprisingly excellent, by the way.

Nice, nice. Damn solid so far.

Way better than what ever the mainstream take will inevitably be. Evan Peters as Prince. Purple Rain Amadeus iconography fading into 2015 title-card zoom-in's on a hand clutching a prescription bottle. Yuck.

This
is the way. With Prince gone, the OCD nerds with reciepts and a little video editing software like these are the next best authority.

Why not? Because they're not from the '80s, so the Estate doesn't think they'll sell?

Prince had planned to release them, didn't he? I realize he was very caprious and probably shelved more projects than he released, so even if he's stayed alive we wouldn't have been guaranteed to get it. But it sure would seem a lot more authentic than the P&M '83 record the Estate released that I'm sure Prince never for even one fleeting seccond thought about releasing.

Pretty much, yeah. The only chance is if they give us audio of the Purple Rain performances as background music to more Purple Rain Tour rehearsal footage.

Gotta love Prince fans who confused the execptions for the rule.

Of course Prince released some tacky merch, like the perfumes and colognes. But those were the exception. 99% of the commericial products Prince released were music. The knick-knacks were after thoughts.

You could also point to some of the gimmick album packaging, such as the D&P hologram cover and the CB plastic sphere. But those were window dressing for the music. There weren't products in their own rights. The music was still front and center.

Thepoint is, the Estate has flipped this. Most of the stuff they releease is tacky merch. For them, them music is the after thought.

Do you really not see that?

The perfumes and even Hawaii boxsets to an extent at least somewhat carried the Prince aesthetic or vibe, even if they were cash grabs. He wasn't smacking the Purple Rain border print on a onesie or throwing the love symbol on some flip-flops, c'mon now. And if he did, he'd at least have the decency to add in a spritz of gardenia, jasmine and tuberose to a more elaborate packaging design.

exactly. if they release the parade SDE, I for one will gladly part with some cash to buy
and Evolsidog tshirt, a Stella & Charles candle and a Call Of The Wild lunchbox if that's
a means to support the estate and make sure we get more SDE releases.

What's funny about that is that one of the most successful posthumous releases from the estate is Welcome 2 America (57k sold in the first week, debuted at number 4). There's a bigger market for his later stuff than they want to acknowledge.

Definitely keep the 80s vault releases/SDEs coming but the idea his later stuff won't sell or have an audience is silly. We R here, where R U?

The release of Welcome 2 America and the care they took with which to package it shows they aren't scared of recent releases. To think they could or should get away with NOT doing the SDEs they've done thur far is a pipedream.

They know folks are clamoring for any and everything. It's deciding what to do and in what order that is their issue. Given it's a catalog spanning 40 years, it's obvious to me that it will take a while to cover every era.

Exactly. The estate likely was paid millions. Remember, Dave Chapelle got $24 million from Netflix for one, one-hour special.

Well, if the doc has been canceled, there are stipulations in a development deal. That's not a guarantee for funding to actually produce it, and get it streaming on the service. Developing the idea with the studio can just fall apart. Minds don't agree, people get writer's block, one party decides they don't wanna do it this way or that way.

Wasn't Ava Duvernay supposed to do something then said, "Nope, thanks, bye?"

But the question is: IS the doc canceled? Or is it just fans putting up a fuss about something they wanted yesterday (per usual)?

To the OP, a Twitter thread is not an official channel or the final word on anything.

I also wonder why fans are so hot on either a documentary, or some biopic. Every single person who sees an actor portraying a star has their first statement as, "they don't look anything like _______." Well, first it's not a lookalike contest. Second, it's a biopic, everything's going to get squished into 2.5 hours, dramatic flare is going to be taken, etc etc. Why do fans want to see someone who looks like Prince acting out moments in his life? Is that what will feed our souls, and entertain us??? Is that how desperate we are for something?

It seems a documentary is the way to go. It gives much more room for interviews, storytelling, footage, etc. Hell, with the interviews in media, online, and on DVDs etc., it's all out there anyway. Group all that together, and there ya go.

Frankly, if I were a filmmaker, to even consider doing a film or doc on Prince would be a nightmare simply because of the fanbase alone.

From what I could gather from slunkenberrys podcast last nite is their waiting on major record labels to sign off on releases that might tie into the documentary which makes sense.

So, the original tweet (link above) was deleted. And Spicer doesn't seem to have addressed this. Should we assume this was a false rumor?
