Out of print

Why are there still things out of print/not streamable? Some things i noticed.

A bunch of maxisingles

The 3 NPG albums, including New Power Soul, which was really a Prince album

the two madhouse releases

Quite a few official realease songs that I want to share with my kids, but can't.

Try YouTube, sweetie. And with YouTube Music, you don't need to have the video playing.

can't put a youtube video in a Spotify, Apple Music, etc playlist. My daughter had me make her a prince play list, was frustrated I couldn't include several tracks. Either that were missing completely (The One), or where the longer version is better.

It's an absolute nonsense, would literally take someone a couple of days tops to tidy up streaming services and get every album, every 12 inch and every related product available for fans to listen to and non fans to discover.

You could also digitize your collection and put it on your device. I know, I know - strange, but true.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Imagine a world without Spotify or Apple Music. Seems unfeasible.

I side-loaded all of my digitized collection (to include out-of-print and bootlegs) on my iPhone.

A while back there were rumors that Apple would be getting rid of iTunes. This topic is confusing because "iTunes" can mean two different things. There's the iTunes Store (where you purchase media files to permanent own) and there's the iTunes application which you use to manage (i.e. organize and play) your media collection.

If Apple had been considering getting rid of iTunes the store (to focus on streaming), I would have had mixed feelings.

But if Apple had been considering getting rid of iTunes the application, I would have been very upset because I need that app to side-load my out-of-print and bootleg files. I'm sure there are third-party apps that can achieve the same results with an iPhone, but I'm a creature of habit.

They renamed it Music. I think they took out the TV and Podcasts from it, and made apps for those. One more goddamn thing to download.

I remember using Senuti back in the day to pull songs back off my iPoad.

Just about everything you wrote is mistaken.

Apple renamed the mobile app "Music". However, the desktop version is still ccalled iTunes. (At least the Windows version.) And in this context, it's the desktop version weren't interested in. The desktop iTunes is what you use to transfer music files from your comptuer hard drive to you phone (which are then sideloaded into the "Music" app).

With respect to TV and Podcasts, those have always been separate apps on your phone. That's nothing new. But on your desktop, they still remain integrated with music in the solitary iTunes app.

In other words, on your desktop the iTunes app organizes and plays all of your media content, to include music, movies, TV shows and podcast. You can use that iTunes desktop app to transfer medica content to your phone, where it is then split among three mobile apps: Music, TV and Podcasts.

It's inconsistent and messy, which is unusual for Apple which prides itself on having simple, intuative and elegant user interfaces.

Just about everything you wrote is ill-informed.

I'm on a Macbook Air. iTunes is called Music on my desktop. Podcasts and TV are separate, on my desktop. Everything used to be in iTunes and it was a hot, clunky mess. TV, Podcasts, and Music are all separate apps on my desktop.

I'm well aware what iTunes is and that it's used to sync songs to a device for fuck's sake. It's 2022. I'm not new here.

I still have a couple of older iPods with the 4 buttons on them (3rd generation I believe, just before the click wheel). My roommate's car has a cord attached in the console that is Firewire. When we drove to Oklahoma from New York when mom died, I loaded up both iPods with Prince, MJ, Janet, Chaka and other stuff. I was able to use them in the car that way, which was nice.

I bet if I pulled those out and fired them up, they'd still work. I have a little 1G iPod mini, too. Before they became the size of a postage stamp and the screen was taken away.

MIInsane

I ripped all of my Prince stuff to .flac and bought a cheap prepaid phone that allows storage expansion with a microSD card and I'm able to carry all of my music with me.

I have, that works for me. But I made my daughter a lenghty Prince playlist on her streaming service and was frustratated by the songs I couldn't include because they are out of print. It's insantiy that any of the actual released music would be out of print on a streaming service in 2022.

Also a problem for new fans who can't get all of the music in one place. A rediculous situation to have in 2022.

I stream all my music from my personal server, so I don't have this problem, but, yeah, it's frustrating that the entire official catalogue (including related artists, etc.) is not available on streaming services.

Yeah, I have my music, CD and vinyl, digitized and on two clouds in the house. I don't know that I could ever take it all with me, excpet on one of my portable drives.

I suppose if I were going on a long trip or something, I'd clean out my phone a bit and put even more music on it. Of course, I can also log into my cloud from afar and download stuff if necessary.

Still - in 2022, we've gone from portable music, to digitized music, to streaming - to whatever we're at now. I knew things were insane when I saw Apple create ear pods, then create a cord to hold them together or whatever, and minimize the Macbook to one port, then create a world of dongles. I knew Steve Jobs had to be turning over in his grave because of it all. But I suppose all that's another thread.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm pretty sure I could fit my entire Prince collection (~1,500 songs) on my iPhone. Space isn't an issue. But it would be a challenge to sort through them using the Music library interface.

New gen really does get helpless when stuff isn't streaming. They make constant threads on every band/artist reddit and replies about ripping CDs available used on eBay for $1.75 are always met with a shug and a, "Guess I'll just wait until hopefully it appears on streaming one day..."

People used to lug crates of vinyl around on moving day house-to-house but you can't get a gen-z'er to load a digital file on their iPhone now. My fam would probably say they don't even know what that means or "I don't think my phone can do that."

I mean uhh, literally we couldn't even get a snippet of "When Doves Cry" played in the background of a cat video without the Prince copyright army striking it down from the internet ten years ago. I still marvel that Prince even has an official YouTube channel now.
