I'm fairly certain he did a guide vocal in addition to the backing vocals.

While specific recording dates are not known, it is believed that the track was recorded in May 1983 at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota (credited as "the Purple House basement studio"). Some reversed background vocals by Jill Jones include the lines "Else would a maiden blush bepaint my cheek / For that which thou hast heard me speak tonight", taken from William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet (Act 2, Scene 2). This same recording was later used in Intermission. Every day when I awake, the greatest of joys is mine: that of being ME.

The vocal delivery is def. pure Prince. He had an inunciation style that's usually all over his male protege/songs-written-for's work. If it sounds like someone doing Prince karaoke it's usually a Prince song (Ready for the World notwithstanding). [Edited 12/4/22 20:01pm]

I think the Originals set messed that up for us. They keep withholding vocal demos from the deluxe sets and then someone'll be like "oh, the estate is waiting for Originals 2". [Edited 12/5/22 7:17am]
