This got recommended the other night but I shut it off when he said he doesn't actually own any Prince records all aghast. Zappa just liked a good rant. Captain Beefheart was better anyway,

Captain Beefheart may more to your liking, but by any musical metric he is not "better" and couldn't do a fraction of what Zappa accomplished, whether you enjoy it or not.

That's your loss. Zappa was praising Prince's ability to keep his own vision while working with a major label. He also priased Warner Brothers for allowing Prince to be himself, and Zappa HATED Warner Brothers. Zappa priased Prince's work ethic. Zappa's praise of Prince wasn't related to Prince's music specifically, just that Prince was able to pull it off on his own terms. Owning Prince records is not necessary to praise him for his hard work and ability to get what he wanted.

So it's my "loss" for not wrapping up the final 40 seconds of Zappa's cyclical musings on an artist I've already been sold on for over a decade and a half, but not his loss for never checking out a Prince album? Is that tally about correct? [Edited 11/12/22 3:38am]

The mighty Zappa, how dare you intimate he actually should check out a record from the artist we all felt strong enough to register on a website with his namesake in the URL. He is Zappa! He is beyond mere mortal material trappings like albums and records. The insight that could be soaked from his musings on why a shoe has a shoelace is your loss for not basking in. Meh never cared for critics. He's my all-time favorite recording artist and I had friends and family who couldn't stand his music. Its too subjective [Edited 11/29/22 12:40pm]

You don't need to have a Prince record to have an interesting (constructive) opinion. Zapa is just like prince, he ate breathed and lived music every moment of his life. People like that know what they are talking about. By the way, Zappa praise dPrince's approach as an artist in a music industry, saying the guy had A plan. - Talking about owning records... Did Prince actually had a record collection? ...part from the few CDs he bought right before his death... "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

In that photo collection that came out shortly after his death someone close to him is quoted as saying Prince bought anyone he had an opinion of.
