In a broader stroke, I've long, long said that Prince made his best music when he was in conflict. Whether it be with Warner Bros., management, personal friendships, or girlfriends, those were his best songs.

It's only when he got "free" that he lost a lot of that abrasive mojo. He didn't go on auto-pilot overall, but he had those blander moments in his last twenty years.

That said, it's really why we're fascinated with the earlier part of his career. We love the 80s music, but we also love the stories behind it. We love to hear about him showing up shirtless with an attitude. We love to hear him wearing a ton of beads while recording drums that we can hear on the record because he was moving so much. We love to hear about him recording a vocal and these yelps and screams coming from the control room while he's in there by himself. We love to hear anything that gives context and shades to the music he was recording at the time. Much of the same goes for the bulk of his 90s output.

Doesn't mean every story inspired a song from that time. But it gives us perspective as to his headspace. A young 20-something just flowing so naturally within his gift. The comparisons to Mozart or Beethoven are more than reasonable; they're required.

So "F.U.N.K." certainly seems to have triggered him into his older ways of using the things in his life as inspiration. I edited that song and honed it a bit. It feels better to listen to this way.

Why would you edit Prince's execution of inspirations?

Agreed. "Hello" is also great because he's pissed off. Obviously his performance at the R&R HOF would fall into this category too.

Not really "pissed off", but more "my side of the story".

This place is very hostile.

Prince fans are the only people on earth more megalomaniacal than the man himself was. Case in point;

This is great. You bloviate for four paragraphs on how this exemplifies the manifestation of his artistic peaks, then conclude it was better when you tore the song in half... surely what ever % you chopped off illustrates the % of the song you didn't care for.. no? Then again don't you usually appraise D&P based on your edit where you remove half the LP?

When he imagined he had a point to prove, more like it. He overpromised and underdelivered. I'd say the fans had reason to be bitchy. Prince did not.

i imagine that whoever runs this site likes to piss people off.

it's so so so so broken!

there is no way to change anything from "showing final post only, change this in your forum preferences", so why are we here?

well i have to reply to rockford so here goes:

Rockford, are you suggesting that more like Prince's imagination than his actual output and delivery?

That sounds like we like our own imagination more than our actual output and delivery.

I've put out and delivered a lot of things on the internet at least. And in other instances. when my job was actual typing, i did a lot.

who did Prince overpromise and underdeliver to though. only himself.

notice i'm not keeping anything i write in any correct placement, sure i could have mentioned something about forum preferences under the site disucssion but it's not MY ORG is it. let somebody else sort all that out. all those 542000 guestimate number responses. i tweet more than i ever post on here which i could share my twitter handle but you guys are mean so please don't look me up on there nope dont want that.

this isn't even my account because my accounts are way more legible and organized much the way my mind works.

I remember PFUNK story as this:

-Prince fans on multiple forums were (ORG Housequake) were upset at Prince sikking Netsherrif on them for posting pictures without his consent and numerous other "infractions" that qualify as normal fair use communication in the 21st century.

-The sites got together in a campaign "Prince fans united"

-Prince put the song out (PFUNK) and said that he wasnt in control of what his representatives were doing

am I wrong?

I think the only Prince song I had edited for content was The Daisy Chain. Someone here on the Org cut out the rap portion, which vastly improves the song.

Goodness I don't think I've heard that song enough to remember there is a rap in it. I cut the rap out of "I Rock, Therefore I Am" and it's much better. I also took about the rap in the first part of "Da, Da, Da."

"Pfunk" just needed to be tightened up.

HAHAHA No! I love "Gett Off." I simply took the instrumental intro parts and overdubbed them over Tony's sections, so it literally erases his rapping from those parts. I did that with "The Max" as well. Other songs like "Daddy Pop" "My Name is Prince," "Sexy MF," etc - when I went into those songs, those rap sections looked like a tagged on section. When you edit it out and piece the ends together in a logical musical way, the songs made way more sense. You could tell how they were a song before Prince felt the need to put 16 or 24 more measures in for that hack.

Another guy simply took out Tony's sections without anything else put in. The songs jumped from one section to another and made no sense. It was a shit show.

But a 23 second version? LOL but no!
