Prince in the new Weird Al movie

Just finished watching the Weird Al biopic (it's free through Roku). It's fun watch. Nothing too serious. There was a cameo by "Prince." Don't want to spoil anything..... lol

The movie was very, very funny. We loved watching it.

And yeah, Prince lost to Weird Al at some fake awards ceremony for a non-existent category.

It's kind of a good-humored stab since Prince was up in his feelings about the "Let's Go Crazy" parody. Al should release that. Prince is dead, and parodies are allowed under the law.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The Weird Al song called Traffic Jam is pretty close to Let's Go Crazy. Clearly a Prince-influenced jam.

Interesting blurb on Wiki about this:

______________
On numerous occasions, Prince refused Yankovic permission to record parodies of his songs. Yankovic had stated in interviews prior to Prince's death in 2016 that he had "approached him every few years [to] see if he's lightened up".Yankovic related one story where, before the American Music Awards where he and Prince were assigned to sit in the same row, he got a telegram from Prince's management company, demanding he not even make eye contact with the artist. Among parodies that Yankovic had ideas for included one based on "Let's Go Crazy" about The Beverly Hillbillies, "Yellow Snow" as a parody of "Purple Rain", "1999" as an infomercial with a call-in number ending in −1999, and parodies of "Kiss" and "When Doves Cry". Despite these refusals, Yankovic was able to gain permission to parody the "When Doves Cry" video as part of his music video for the song "UHF". He was also permitted to write the song "Traffic Jam" from his album Alapalooza, which is in the style of "Let's Go Crazy".

_______________

Prince sounds like a total tool. Don't even make eye contact??? Fuck off.

In reality, one doesn't need permission to do a parody. It's free speech, not copyright issue. He should've released them a couple of years after Prince died.

Prince spoofed Al in the "Partyman" video.

I thought that to be unfair of Prince.

Until i remembered my first concert experience with Al, ' The Stupid Tour '85 '

I noticed that in the live shows, Al would parody anyone he liked without permission.

Still, i think Al is a supertalent.

And, the "Documovie" was a perfect parody unto himself lol

(Evan Rachel Wood killed it as Madonna, too!!!)

Al has explained many times that legally he does not need permission to parody anyone. Copyright law has an exception for parodies.

Nevertheless, Al asks for persmission as a professional courtesy. He always honors other artists' wishes, even though he isn't legally required to do so.

He told a story of Paul McCartney denying him permission to parody "Live and Let Die." Al's version would have been "Chicken Pot Pie." McCarnety objected because he's a vegetarian and didn't want any of his songs being re-written to discuss eating flesh. He said Al was free to parody the song if he chanegd the topic/lyrics to a differenc subject. All said that "Tofu Pot Pie" wouldn't have sounded as good, so he passed.

I mean....eeehhhh was it supposed to be Al? It could be construed that way.

The MJ-Bubbles reference is way more clear, and funnier. I never picked up on the Al reference, if it is one. But the Bubbles thing, "Wearing a Prince t-shirt?!" is a fun jab between friendly rivals.

Wood's voice is what nailed Madonna's the most. Her face is shaped quite different than Madonnas, but her Detroit midwestern accent was just spot on.

Ooh, now I definitely think Prince would have had a good time on The modern Howard Stern Show. Howie's apparently got the same rule with his staff when he's walking in the hallways...

In actual reality, Weird Al has been well aware of parody laws since the beginning of his career, but has always made the release of his parody's contingent on permission from the original artists, because he's a classy guy. It's unlikely he turns against his own moral fiber... maybe someday someone will open the Weird Al vault, though.

Eminem also sort of rejected Al, okay'ing the parody at first but later refusing to let him make him a video.

Definitely Al. Maybe they were "friendly rivals", too... Any stories of Prince playing the bass in Al's face or trying to run him down with his car? With "friendly rivals" like that....

bunch of redditors agree.

Looks like Weird Al did indeed fire back with a visual Prince parody in the music video for "UHF":

https://youtu.be/NUi926ses94?t=83

Damn, he even mocked Prince's trademark mic moves and Prince's homage to the 60's Batman "Batussi". P musta been seething.

By the way, the category that Prince lost to Al in was:

Perhaps Not Technically the Best But Arguably The Most Famous Accordian Player In An Extremely Specific Genre of Music

Prince was right anyway. Weird Al Yankovich was terrible.

This movie is probably going to do it for the new gen, back in the day it was all about his Behind the Music. Fully recruited on the bangwagon as a tweenager on the playground it was all like "Yeah man, Weird Al rocks," then you check out those albums and shit's basically Raffi with Nick Jr. comedic sensibilities. He'd make like, "Little Red Corvette" into "Little Red Smorgasbord" or some nonsense. Spend four minutes singing about cold cuts. This is humor? This is comedy?

You gonna make Prince's music into a joke and have the audacity to not even make the joke funny? Nuh uh. Master P had to put limits on that soljah.

Raffi's OG, he didn't need cheap punchlines to rock the party.
