A suggestion: is it time to remove the wall of warning text? I mainly visit on mobile these days. The top of the forum is an imposing wall of rules — well intentioned but very heavy compared to modern sites elsewhere. I wonder if we could consider shortening it, rendering it in a less aggressive way , or even removing it? I understand that it exists to aid civility, referencing and legality. ‘Legality’ (in brackets, as I’m referring to Prince’s definition of legal, I suppose) must surely be less of an issue these days (does the estate really police us the way Prince used to?). I would argue that officious warnings don’t often encourage civility. Which just leaves he referencing (which I feel if the most important bit, but could perhaps be better put). So how about it? Maybe time to focus on a friendly welcome rather that a potentially alienating set of rules?

I’ve offered to help redesign the site, but haven’t heard anything.

This site is basically abandoned, folks. Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

It’s not just software. Not even close. The site needs completely revamped to make it easier and more intuitive. As it stand now, it’s so dated per the examples you stated, that there’s nothing here to entice existing and new users. Especially bc of the vitriol and entitlement of existing users.

Yep, it's dead. | |

The last portion of your analysis kind of encapsulates why a redesign is more or less inconsequential, though--dress it up with all the 2022 contemporary gloss you want, mobile app, mobile-friendly, emoji-laden, post-ratings, social media-integrated--it's gonna still be the same condescending, overly-semantic bordering on the "vitriol" from the old guard.

[Edited 8/26/22 22:13pm] [Edited 8/26/22 22:14pm] Fair points for sure. I agree with most of what you said. Twitter, Discord, and YT are all prime examples of users spouting vitriol and elitism on the reg. Yet all of those platforms are significantly easier to use, which entices more users to tolerate the behavior and harness the tools of said site/platform for their own enjoyment. I’m a product guy, and it’s my job to make products more enticing for user interaction. There’s a lot of potential here even though there’s plenty of evidence to say otherwise. I’ve polished shittier turds with much success.

It's not nonsense. Words matter and it behooves folks to afford themselves all the power and access that their phones grant them and just fucking Google it.

The Org is a special place and its longevity is a sign of the valuable role it has played. So, it would be amazing if the moderators would finally tackle the endemic culture of rudeness that has existed on this website for so long (unfortunately, sometimes perpetrated by moderators themselves), which has served no constructive purpose and has surely driven many folks away or discouraged them from posting.

Ideas matter. Words are symbols that represent ideas. The beauty and practicality of language is that multiple words can be used to express a single idea. Contrary to what you believe, we are not limited to using a single word to convey an idea. Communication is a two-way street. It entails both speaking and listening. If you're telling me you're incapable of understanding an idea unless one hyper specific term is used, then you may have poor communication / listening skills. While a speaker certainly has an obligation to express themselves as clearly as possible, a listener has a reciprocal obligation to try to understand the message being conveyed. Refusing to conceptually understand a person's message because they didn't use your preferred terminology fails to meet that listener's obligation. (I say "preferred" word, rather than the "right" word, because language allows multiple words to be "right".) [Edited 8/31/22 11:20am]

One or two mods have outstayed their welcome, so bringing in some new faces, and permanently banning Bort (who's gone radio silent) would be a good start.

One thing needed on both sites is to split "PM&M" into TWO forums: Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

What about that one mod who went mostly silent after a while and then popped up only to sticky his own article whining about what he describes as mistreatment by Paisley staff.

for a while I thought that the estate might offer enough to ben to but site. But the site was on the down slide in 2015... most of what it had going was ended last year. (and I have to say I am okay with this) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

It's been 6 years since Prince passed away so of course it will never be super active like it was between 2016-2018.
There's nothing much to talk about.
There are many ressources for new fans : Youtube channels and spotify podcasts, reddit etc...
I personally think that the Prince youtube channels are doing a good job.

Exactly. If the people who own this site have no desire to make it better, turn it over to someone who does. I also agree with mods needing to be replaced. Thank god we don’t have to deal with that narcissistic, vengeful caseyrain anymore. I’d take Bart over his ass any day off the week. Watch this get me banned, oh well, only check in here a few times a year nowadays anyway…
