Question of U? Keyboardist how does Prince make those sounds in the Beginning of Question of U? What type of Keys/Synthesizer is he most likely using? |

Sounds like a woodwind preset on a modern workstation would today, or on a polyphonic analog synth like the Oberheim OBX8 back in the day.
I am fairly certain you could repro this exact sound on a Prophet Rev2 or a Yamaha Modx. |

That sound is Eric Leeds on flute with delay added. It isn't a keyboard. |

Wasn't "12 Keys" the name of the song originally, per him naming it?

Yup
So we've answered that OP question. What's next? "What is that sound at the beginning of 'I Would Die 4 U'? I've read that it's Prince pulling the cable out of his guitar."

.
I believe Prince actually recorded the song before the "12 keys" name was given to the rehearsal where Prince had the band he was jamming with at that point play it. Since no lyrics were used, Eric just named the tracks as best he could, for future reference. Had Prince named the tracks, 12 Keys would never have been a thing. Excellent info LoveGalore!
Do you play Keys yourself (seems like it to know all that)? [Edited 9/14/22 9:00am] |
