This is not a another "Shade Graffiti Bridge" post more like me thinking out loud and I know he was playing a character but something about his energy seems very "down" in the movie, I can't put my finger on it. It makes me wonder whether he was was going through some professional and personal stuff around that time.

Including "Can't stop This feeling I got" would have lifted the mood of the movie by the way. I wish I could see a clear version one day.

well... I'm thinking that not being able to use the original scripts he wanted to film and possibly getting the financing before the point he couldn't use the scripts anymore.. he had to make the movie. So throw some ideas about the Time movie and good and evil together with a spiritual sauce and just do it to meet the contracts. I mean, I'm sure not even Prince thought it was good.

I donb't know, wasn't it around this time he had lawsuits coming left and right for whatever and Paisley Park wasn't drawing in what he hoped?
I think he almost went bankrupt around this time and almost had to shut down Paisley Park until Sinead O Conner and MC Hammer helped him financially with Nothing Compares 2 U and the samples MC Hammer used (Soft and Wet and When Doves Cry)
I think I also read at the time that that was the reason of him doing the Nude Tour with mostly hits.
Diamonds and Pearls was a much needed hit then.

I think, post Lovesexy, Prince was having partial writers block. He was still churning stuff out, but lyrically he didn't know what he wanted to say and what sound to go with in the face on the changing music scene.

I think that lack of direction is reflective in the quality of some of the tracks from Batman/Rave and the fact that GB was stuffed with vault tracks.

Imagine if Purple Rain would have been with Vanity or if he would have used Basinger's script for Graffiti Bridge.

Who is to say the Prince/Basinger script was any better? Also, what would Vanity have brought to Purple Rain other than a freakishly long torso?

Jill Jones said that it was much better.

About Purple Rain, Vanity and Prince had a real relationship so the chemistry would have been off the charts, and the movie was meant to be a little darker with Vanity in it.

Kim Basinger's family came to Minneapolis (while Prince was away) and basically forced her to come home with them. They thought she was brainwashed.

So that's a little more than a relationship "ending". Not that it would have lasted too long anyway.
