Prince charts and sales 2022 Previous topic : https://prince.org/msg/7/468329 I couldn't let you without an update on the charts, with the current re-releases of Live in Syracuse and Gold Experience. Best selling albums in the US so far in 2022, as of week 20 : Rank Estimated 2022 Sales TITLE Artist Estimated Total Sales 1 192,000 ENCANTO Soundtrack 209,000 17 65,000 PURPLE RAIN Prince & the Revolution 4,334,000 Last year at week #20, Purple Rain was at this point of the year at #26 with 66.000 copies sold. So this year it's just short of 1000 copies sold. In 2020, as of week 20 it sold only 31.000 copies. Also to be noted, Welcome 2 America reached the 100.000 copies sold as of week 16, meaning it sold like 8.000 copies in 2022.

According to Hits Daily Double, The Live in Syracuse' is expected to rank at #18 on The Billboard 200 and to sell 19.000 copies, including 16,700 pure sales, https://m.hitsdailydouble...S-UP-AGAIN Surely a top ten in the sales charts.

I have difficulties understanding the numbers. Surely the number one record of this year (Encanto) must have sold more than 192.000 units?
and also, Purple Rain has sold more than the mentioned 4.5 million records in the US since its release...
Or is this only vinyl? No CDs included? What about streaming?
where did you get these numbers? Billboard?

Surely the number one record of this year (Encanto) must have sold more than 192.000 units No. Welcome to the streaming era. Yeah, it hurts. Purple Rain has sold more than the mentioned 4.5 million records in the US since its release.. You're right. Purple Rain sold like 17 millions in the US alone. But the soundscan tracking began only in 1991. So that means that PR sold 4.3 M in the US stores since 1991. Music club sales weren't tracked neither, even after 1991, and are not even included in these 4.33M. is this only vinyl? No CDs included? These numbers are pure sales only, including CDs, audio cassette, vinyls. But no streaming. PR streaming equivalent sales numbers are about 3k copies a week, so you may consider the album "sold" 130.000 copies as of now. I m not interested in streaming numbers though. p>where did you get these numbers? Ukmix, Billboard, Hits Daily Double

US Billboard Charts (18/06/2022) Finally missing the Billboard 200 top 20, "Live" Is best new entry of the week in every format. Interestingly, it is also regarded as a catalog album, despite never been charted in the music format- only video charts, back in 1985 ! We'll see if this release cannibalize Purple Rain sales, or if it will benefit from the exposition. I expect Gold Experience to be big next week on the US charts.
It could well top the album sales charts. It is indeed the most printed release of that RSD, with 24,150 copies. The 2nd being Pearl Jam's Live on two legs. Last year, all of the 13,000 copies of the Truth accounted in the US charts. There's also the regular CD version, printed for the 1 st time since 1995. Streaming sales could be higher than usual with the newly available TMBGITW. [Edited 6/17/22 5:42am]

Prince and The Revolution’s ‘Live’ Album Lights up Billboard Charts BY KEITH CAULFIELD 'Live' is Prince's 33rd top 40-charting album on the Billboard 200 — and the late legend's first live release to reach the chart. Prince and The Revolution’s newly remixed and remastered archival live album, Prince and The Revolution: Live, makes a splash across Billboard’s charts as it debuts in the top five on Top Album Sales, Top R&B Albums, Catalog Albums, Tastemaker Albums and Vinyl Albums (all dated June 18). It also bows at No. 11 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 22 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. The revamped version of the album was released on June 3 via NPG/Legacy. Prince and the Revolution: Live is the highest-charting live album on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in nearly three years, since Lionel Richie’s Hello From Las Vegas debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Aug. 31, 2019, chart. Over on the Billboard 200, Live is Prince’s 33rd top 40-charting album — and the late legend’s first live release to reach the chart. The Live album earned 17,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending June 9, according to Luminate. Album sales comprise nearly all of that sum. The album was recorded at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., on March 30, 1985, as part of the Purple Rain Tour and was initially commercially released on VHS tape as a home video that year as Prince and The Revolution Live. The home video release spent nine weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Music Video Sales chart. It also garnered a Grammy Award nomination for best music video, long form. Of the nearly 17,000 copies sold of Prince and The Revolution: Live, physical sales comprise 15,000 (8,000 on vinyl and 7,000 on CD) and digital sales comprise 2,000.

A comeback for Gold Experience, that is not as impressive as was The Truth' last year, which was the #1 on vinyl and RSD. The performance is really disappointing, since The Truth was printed at 13,000 copies, against the 24,150 copies for Gold. 😤 It was in fact the biggest printing for this RSD, ahead of Pearl's Jam Live On Two Legs (22, 000). #47 re-entry on Billboard Top 200 is rathe rimpressive since it contains no extra material. I'm sure the LP had a lot to do with that tho

I'm sure the LP had a lot to do with that tho Of course it's mainly the RSD release that pushed that numbers. What is sad is that these re-releases in fact never make publicity for the hits on it and never make the streaming up. It could be a top 5 in sales, but nobody else cares, and the following week it's already out of the charts.

It is cool that he is charting but it is on sale numbers alone which these numbers 20 years ago would be embarrasing.
The problem is the younger generation, for now, get their music by streaming and the streaming numbers are way low, which shows a new generation of fans are not finding him, and that goes solely on the estate. You can't give yourself props for these numbers when it is the hardcore only buying it. Comerica cannot be gone fast enough...

US Billboard Charts (09/07/2022) Top Album Sales: 92(5)10 The Gold Experience The Gold Experience save the honor this week in the US. Syracuse is already out after only 3 weeks, and even Purple Rain is out after years of consecutive charting! A few months ago it was charting most of the time in the top 20 ! What happened? Not even copies printed/available on stores? Complete shame in France : Gold reissue has not charted in the top 200 albums (!) It would have been its first entry in France, since the album when originally released in 1995, never charted there.

The longer current runs on catalog sales belong to The Beatles' Abbey Road at 212 weeks and Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city at 111 weeks. Following them is now Fleetwood Mac's Rumours with 71 weeks. Again, what happened? I just hope the current legal battle doesn't prevent the estate to print new copies of the Prince catalogue. Or maybe the Syracuse live cannibalized the declining sales of Purple Rain. I m afraid next week would be for the first time since his death, a week without any Prince album on any of the sales charts. Ouch Apparently, the deal the estate signed with Netflix prevents them to release any new video material, hence the cancellation of the SDEs.

As for the Netflix thing, is that really true? [Edited 7/8/22 19:11pm]

As for the Netflix thing, is that really true? [Edited 7/8/22 19:11pm] It's what people who claim they are in the know say. That would explain why WB opted to not release D&P or Parade last year. That would explain why Sony re-released Syracuse. But sstill doesn't explain why they didn't release Originals 2, or Camille, or even the NPGMC albums, etc.

Idea for the Estate : because of the Netflix deal, this year would be the perfect year to release an Originals Boxset. We still could have it just before Christmas.
