An old friend ( for sales?) is coming back this week on the US charts.
Which is very surprising, considering this is an hyper competitive week.
Was this album promoted or on sales somewhere?

Probably people buying gifts for friends that were fans and maybe they figure they dont have it. I have seen this featured on "gift ideas" in a bunch of Barnes and Noble locations so Im guessing other places like Target are doing similar things, sometimes a label will request front placement in ads, better get whatever they can on sales now during these two weeks or so.

so interesting how Taylor outsold the artist of the year (according to billboard and time magazine) in Olivia Rodrigo, with a newly recorded old album that's only been out a five weeks.

Another huge week for Prince, during what is the most competitive week of the year.
W2A has incredible legs, considering there was zero promotion since the day of release. Not even an award nomination!

Wow, 15k for Purple Rain and 4k for W2A!
That's huge.
Let's hope W2A will have a decrease in price in January, as every other albums normally have a few months after release.
It seems that the estate releases ( Originals, Piano amd Mic) never were sold cheaper than the original price, which hurts catalogue sales.

W2A is the #25 best selling album released that year, without amy kind of promotion since day one, and got no awards nominations.
With just a little push ( cheap lyrics/archival music videos, tv performance from the vocal trio with the original musicians, they could have sold 200k copies.

They could have also done a tour focused on the album, it would have made money.

Funny :

The Truth is #1 ! It's the most purchased album by Discogs members in 2021.
Meaning is still the most sought-artist for music collectors.

https://blog.discogs.com/...s-in-2021/

A few years ago, Prince had the most expensive album on the Internet, with the Black Album.

Welcome 2 America is the 93th best selling album of the year 2021 in Switzerland.
It peaked at #2 and stayed on the charts for 8 weeks.

As an aside note, it seems W2A didn't make the best albums lists in the likes of NME, Rolling Stones, etc. despite good reviews when released and good sales. Really unfair.

You're welcome!
I never listened to The Truth in its entirety😱. I tried a few times like 15 years ago, but I was bored mid-course.
Since I don't have Crystal Ball, I was very interested in a reissue on CD ( with Kamasutra, but it's unlikely it will happen. And they don't have the rights for Kamasutra anyway.

Spending 45 bucks for the vinyl of The Truth is too far-stretched for me.
I guess if I found it on a wreckastore, I would have bought it though.
Too bad they printed only 13k copies worldwide.

But that's what made it a success in the Record Store Day.

For the next RCS, I think they will print more copies (my bet is on a NPGMC album such as Chocolate Invasion).
Vinyls are selling more and more, so that's likely.

Thanks a lot! 😀

I don't think they will do Camille, since it wasn't released before, it must be on a juridical limbo.
Even a completed album such as Undertaker release seems unlikely, because : who owns it?

The best selling reissue of Sony Legacy was The Versace Experience, simply because it was never released before. It seems Sony was able to release it to compensate for the impossibility to release Gold Experience.

Instead of the ONA box set, which sold poorly, they should have released an NPGMC box set, since it was never available in stores before.

Purple Rain is the 7th best selling album in vinyl in the US with 208,000 copies sold, according to Hits Daily Double.

Last year, Purple Rain sold 98k in vinyls out of the 115k total, that is to say 85%.
Now it's 94%.
How poorly just sell the SDE, only released in CD.

Adele's 30 is #1 with only 319k copies.

It sold 41,717,000 vinyls in 2021 in the US, a 40% increase from 2020 (27, 519,000)!

In the UK, 5.3 millions of vinyls sold last year.
#1 was Voyage with 40k copies.
Purple Rain is NOT in the top 50 sad

Here we are, week 52 !

"So it seems like this year, Purple Rain could sell like 200.000 copies, which seems unbelievable"

These words were written by me on the 1st post of the 1st 2021's sales topic ( link on the opening post) !
And yet, this April's 2021 prophecy eventually fulfilled itself.

This year was indeed unbelievable in term of sales.
5 albums could be certified Gold or Platinum by their sales only!

Some achievements by Prince in the US in 2021.

Prince sold a total of 250k albums in 2019 and 320k in 2020.
This year, with only 2 albums, Purple Rain and Welcome 2 America, Prince achieves 319k sales!

Purple Rain charts facts :
- From the 223k copies sold, 208k were actually in the vinyl format. Meaning the SDE is really selling like shit.
- It sold 108k more copies than in 2020, an increase of 94% !
- It beats his most famous'rival, MJ's Thriller (187k)
- The #6 best selling catalogue album of the year
- With only 376k SPS sales ( pure sales + equivalent streaming sales), Purple Rain streaming numbers are awful.
To compare with, Thriller has 519k SPS!

Welcome 3/2 America charts fact :
- With 50k copies sold the 1st week, it almost doubled its sales in 5 months.
- The #27 best week of the year in term of sales with 50k copies sold
- The #26 best selling album released in 2021.
- It beats a number of huge and highly promoted releases, which had radio hits, huge streaming, music videos, etc. Everything W2A hadn't!

- The Weekend's Highlights (94k)
- Coldplay's Music of the Sphere (76k)
- Drake's Certified Lover Boy (68k)
- Kanye West's Donda (53k)
- Last but not least, it sold three times more than Elton John's Lockdown, which had two #1 hits Worldwide!

Given the more than decent sales of W2A, do you reckon Sony might be more prepared to work with the estate on similar stand alone releases, rather than potentially messy collaborations with Warners on non-soundtrack Super Deluxes?

I don't think there's much unreleased albums left in the vault.
Not as current, and not with a same strong story.

The best opportunity I can see, is to release the last Piano and Mic shows. If they can find the best date on the tour + the very last show recorded professionally in audio and video, it could be a hit.
But does it really exist?

The last show was at least recorded professionally :
https://princevault.com/i...Microphone

But was it filmed?

I couldn't close this year 2021 5-parts thread without giving my estimations of what Prince sold in the US in 2021.

.

For a reminder :

2019 : 250K

2020 : 320k (including 115k of Purple Rain)

.

Here is the countdown :

.

WB catalogue :

PURPLE RAIN: 223k

THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE : 20k

SOTT and 1999 : 10k each

The greatest hits : an average of 5k each ( The Hits 1, 2, 3, Ultimate, 4EVER, Originals)

Big albums : an average of 5k each (Prince, ATWIAD, Parade)

Dirty Mind,Controversy : 3k each

For You, Lovesexy, Graffiti Bridge, D&P, Lovesymbol, Piano and Mic, AOA : 1K each

Total : 321k

.

Thanks to Purple Rain, WB's catalogue already explodes Prince's total last year' sales.

.

Sony Legacy catalogue :

WELCOME 2 AMERICA : 96k

The Truth : 13k

Versace Experience : 1k

3121, Musicology, Planet Earth, Rave box set, RaveIn2, RaveUn2, Emancipation, Chaos and Disorder, ONA boxset, ONA piano, ONA live, It ain't over yet : 500 copies each.

Total : 116k

.

.

Conclusion : With WB + Sony Prince sold 437k in the US in 2021.

Purple Rain moves from 185 back up to 171 on this week's Billboard 200 (for the week ending January 22) in its 162nd week on the chart. Surprisingly, it is not his longest-charted album; 1999 has a total of 163 weeks on the BB200. So if PR charts just two more weeks (which it undoubtedly will, even if it falls off for a bit before then) it will finally become his longest-charting album.

In another minor milestone this week, he logs a 100th total week on the Artist 100 chart. This chart was created in 2014, and Prince reached number one there in 2016 after his passing.

What can be expected for 2022 in term of sales ?

Purple Rain sold exceptionnally well last year.

In fact,in the last 6 years Purple Rain sold an impressive 1,2 millions copies in pure sales ! That album begins to be an oversaturated market.

2016 : 496k

2017 : 171k

2018 : 98k

2019 : 92k

2020 : 115k

2021 : 223k

.

2021 was an exceptionnal year : for the first time in 17 years, the physical market is not shrinking, but in full increase ! But that was mostly thanks to the vinyl craze.

Logically, what was expected was to have the vinyl prices decrease progressively because of a larger amount produced. Then, the lower prices would have allowed to an even bigger increase in sales.

Sadly, that’s the exact opposite happening : since the lack of raw materials, investment in plants and covid, vinyls price has been increased dramatically.

Logically, I think 2022 will be the first year of decrease in sales for this format since like 15 years.

Purple Rain will be of course impacted, and I expect his sales to be "only" around 175k this year.

For the first two weeks of the year in the US Billboard top album sales, the album still hold up well.

As I predicted a few weeks ago, the physical market is shrinking again (-14% from last year at the same time) after an incredible year 2021.
Sure some vinyls sales are still impressive : Adele sold in the US alone more than 300.000 copies of her "30" 2LP from a 500.000 shipment.
.
But the insane high price is, I think, killing the market.

Incredible week for Purple Rain, which makes the top 20 in top album sales again.
But look at how the charts are all disconnected from reality ( reality, which is mostly composed now of vinyls!) :
Purple Rain, despite #20 on sales, has not enough points to appear in the Billboard 200 ( sales + streaming).
PR'streaming is about 3000 equivalent sales a week, but its pure sales are now so weak in terms of numbers, that it's not enough for it to be on THE most important charts, the one in which commentators are mostly looking at ( which means nothing to me though).
.
Now, look at the Lockdown Sessions, the last album of Elton John. Despite containing one US and worldwide hit, with huge exposition on the radio, etc. it sold poorly in the US ( in the 30k copies). It sold in fact three times less than Welcome 2 America, which had ZERO promotion.

To be fair, the Lockdown Sessions sold 105k copies in the UK alone though( sales+ streaming).

Now that the Do Me Baby single is officially released, sadly it won't make the charts in the US, and logically nowhere else since it is shipped from the Prince Store, which is located in the US.
There's no physical singles sales charts since December of 2017.
.
With 1981 copies sold in cassettes and surely three times this number in vinyl, all formats sold out, it would have made #1 for sure.
.
Too bad there's no combining sales with the digital sales charts.
That would be a good idea to combine physical + sales charts, since the digital sales is also a dying format, amd the numbers in 2021 were low.
.
Again, one can question the opportunity to release that single without any album related to it, such as a Controversy SDE.
It reminds me of the Nothing Compares 2 U single, released one freaking year before Originals, without a bang.
It would have made more impact amd publicity as a lead single for Originals, instead of just throwing it all away.
So they released Originals with Manic Monday, not as interesting for alarge audience.
