I'll probably get raked over the coals for saying this but I've been listening to Small Club and IMO, it's not that great. I mean, it's cool and all. The band sounds tight and Prince's singing is great but I think it gets lots of kudos because of performance of Just My Imagination and the solo in it. It has a slightly plastic-ness to it. Rave To The Joy Fantastic is superb though. I also have it on vinyl with that image of Prince jumping in the air in those satin (?) briefs.

I also think it was a first encounter for many for the possible excellent quality recordings that could be around. It opened a whole new view on this and what could be.

Yes I think you're right. I don't really remember any other previous boots sounding as good as that one when I got it.

This boot also shows Prince as a great band leader.

I don't disagree with you. I think a lot of it is brilliant, but I am making a concerted effort never to hear Bonnie scream her way through Forever In My Life again.

That's why I put Rave 2000 up there with Sign, and above Small Club. There's no overplaying or oversinging. It's as tight as a hot female ectomorph's butt.

Having said what I said about Small Club, the guitar soloing (in all its intervals) on Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic is really incendiary and probably the craziest solo I've heard him play.

Makes it even more ridiculous that there was actually no solo in the released version!!! lol

I pray that there is at least pro-shot video with decent audio of this performance somewhere in the vault and that we will see it one day.

Small Club? I have the original X-Records CD. Wonky titles and all. Bit of hiss but that's just fine, like film grain on old movies filmed on actual film. Fine.

I actually like that there's no overt soloing. The guitar really kicks that song into supreme groove gear without ever stealing the show from the hook or the vocal.

I just wish the released version sounded different altogether.

It's about time for the estate to focus on an ongoing aftershow series. There has to be some great gems in there that are either not in trading circles or improvements on those that are.

That whole run of IndigO2 shows would be awesome. Such variety in the sets.

from, soooo bad ass.
