SOTT Tryout 3/21/87 @ First Ave

Watching this show on a site...really amazing and true live/raw (better than the movie)

.

.

On IGBEABN..... 1st verse, who is singing lead. Prince doesn't have the mic and someone is singing like a female in high falsetto. On the record it's Jill Jones, and the film sounds overdubbed.

.

.

It's sounds too high to be Sheila or Boni and I doubt it was Cat so who was singing that part?

I think it's Sheila, just straining really hard.

I really love that concert, too! If only that one would be cleaned up for commercial distribution.

Hmmm. i've never heard Sheila sing in falsetto. I thought it might be Boni who has more of a "voice" (though Sheila sounds amazing on Forever in Your Life) but it sounds too thin.

Also what elements of Hon E Man are mixed in here? I here the 6 riffs but not the Hon E Man parts.

I have the SOTT Super Deluxe but still haven't opened it. Is the DVD show with Miles on this one overdubbed and modified like the movie or more raw like this one here?

It's like that in the SOTT film as well. It sounds like him singing, but the mic is no where near his mouth. I posted about that in another thread and everyone said it was overdubbed for the film. I don't know what's going on here...

What do you mean "what's going on here"?

It's always been known that the visual and audio were not from the same source.

Technically, I could never say, but as the 1987 NYE concert DVD is a live event my assumption is that it is an all the way live recording on audio. I guess anybody with a mike might have made that sound, onstage or offstage. Or overdubbed, I guess.

My post was abotu this particular 1st tryout show at First Ave, not the SOTT movie. In this video you can tell it's all live but Prince is not singing the 1st verse.

I went back and listened to Sheila E's 3rd album and I forgot that she does sing in a female falsetto on some of the songs (esp the 1st track, One Day (I'm Gonna Make you Mine) so maybe that is she doing the high 1st verse. But it still doesn't really sound "like her" to me...... her voice is actually pretty recognizable usually.

I said I understand the SOTT film was overdubbed, but I'm not sure what is going on *here*, meaning the First Avenue NYE concert.

Did you misread my post and believe I was referring to the SOTT film when I said I'm not sure what's going on? Or are you suggesting the audito and video for the NYE concert are from different sources?

Listening to Hon E Man this morning, I never noticed (or forgot) that towards the end of Hon E Man the horns start doing the same little riff that the SOTT band does when Sheila and Cat are doing like double-dutch-like /skipping dance together during the extended horn part while Prince is on the drum kit in IGBABN right before Prince does the double kick drum drum solo and switches with Sheila again to take over the drums.

.

.

I'm not sure which came first though.

I love the "Girls and Boys" arrangement they premiered for the SOTT tour. It was always a hardcore favorite, and the way it was broken down a bit in the beginning was just great.

The SOTT rehearsals that came out were fantastic, too. I really wish he just sorta plowed through the disks for the first part of the show, as he sorta did in some fashion early on. I believe he did, at least, the first four songs in order.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
